INDIA's Veep Pick Best Known For "Weakening Fight Against Naxalism": BJP Sources

NDTVa day ago
Hitting out at the Congress and the INDIA bloc for picking B Sudershan Reddy as their nominee for the vice president polls, BJP sources have said the former Supreme Court judge is best remembered for "weakening India's fight against Naxalism" since he was part of a bench that had struck down Salwa Judum, a militia set up to combat Maoists in Chhattisgarh.
The sources also said Mr Reddy was one of the judges on the bench that had refused to reopen the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy case in 2011 and reminded the party that it had termed him a "yes man" of the BJP chief minister when he was appointed the first Lokayukta of Goa in 2013.
The Congress, the sources pointed out, had opposed former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi's nomination to the Rajya Sabha, saying it had disgraced the judiciary, but was now exposing its "hypocrisy" by fielding a former judge for elections to a Constitutional post.
On Tuesday, the INDIA bloc announced, after several rounds of discussions, that it would field Mr Reddy as its candidate for the vice presidential elections against the NDA's choice, Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge described the contest as an ideological battle and said Mr Reddy is a distinguished and progressive jurist.
"B Sudershan Reddy is one of India's most distinguished and progressive jurists. He has had a long and eminent legal career, including as Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, and Judge of the Supreme Court. He has been a consistent and courageous champion of social, economic, and political justice. His judgments show how he stood for the poor, protected the Constitution, and upheld fundamental rights," Mr Kharge said.
Countering this assertion, the BJP sources said the opposition bloc has actually picked someone who "weakened India's fight against Naxalism" at a time when the movement is on the decline and the Modi government is making all efforts to eliminate it by March 31 next year.
Mr Reddy was part of the bench that had, in 2011, said the deployment of tribal youth as Special Police Officers in the fight against Maoists was illegal and ordered that Salwa Judum and other such forces not be allowed to operate.
"The State of Chhattisgarh shall forthwith make every effort to recall all firearms issued to any of the SPOs, whether current or former, along with any and all accoutrements and accessories issued to use such firearms. The word firearm as used shall include any and all forms of guns, rifles, launchers et cetera, of whatever calibre," the bench had said.
The sources said this judgment had led to the fight against Naxalism taking a hit.
Mr Reddy, they said, was also on the five-judge bench that had refused to reopen the case into the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy in 2011. BJP leaders have earlier accused the Congress of helping Union Carbide chairman Warren Anderson flee the country in 1984.
The Congress and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, the sources said, had also taken out a black flag protest against the appointment of Mr Reddy as the first Lokayukta of Goa, dismissing him as the "yes man" of then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar of the BJP
"But, in 2025, the same Congress-led INDIA bloc has now fielded the very same person as their vice presidential candidate, hailing him as a 'champion of social and political justice'," said a source.

Let 21-yr olds to contest assembly poll: Revanth

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday pushed for reducing the minimum age to contest assembly elections from 25 to 21 years. He argued that younger leaders must be given space in lawmaking to drive India's future. Paying floral tributes to Rajiv Gandhi on his 81st birth anniversary at the late PM's statue opposite the secretariat, the CM said the move would carry forward Rajiv's vision of empowering youth. "It was Rajiv who gave voting right to every Indian above 18. Today, inspired by the same spirit, we want to give every 21-year-old the opportunity to shape lawmaking in legislative assemblies," Revanth said. If they can thrive at 21, why not as MLAs?" he said. He said the minimum age for contesting Lok Sabha elections could remain at 25 for now, the assembly threshold must be lowered to 21 so that 'young guns' can take charge at the state level. Revanth went a step further, tying the proposal to Congress' national ambitions. "Telangana Assembly will pass a resolution urging the Centre to amend the Constitution once Rahul Gandhi becomes prime minister. To realise this dream, Rahul should be made PM," he declared, calling on youth to rally behind Congress. He recalled how Rajiv had ensured 33% reservation for women in local bodies, laying the foundation for future legislation on women's reservation in state assemblies and Parliament. Revanth claimed that despite BJP's reluctance, it was Rajiv's vision that sowed the seeds of women's political empowerment. He also praised Rajiv's partnership with technocrat Sam Pitroda, which spurred the information technology revolution. "In Hyderabad, the foundation for Hi-Tec City was laid during Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy's tenure as chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh. Today, Hyderabad stands as a hub for IT, data centres, and global capability centres, with Telugu technocrats holding crucial positions in Silicon Valley," he said. Drawing a parallel between Rajiv's vision and Congress govt's current agenda, Revanth said his govt was working to make Hyderabad compete with the world's best cities through projects like Future City and Musi river rejuvenation. He highlighted recent measures, including resolving long-pending SC categorisation and implementing 42% reservation, as proof of his govt's commitment to inclusive growth. High court agrees to hear PIL against Kothagudem corp formation

Hyderabad: A division bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohiuddin of the Telangana high court on Wednesday brushed aside objections raised by the court registry and agreed to hear a public interest litigation challenging the formation of the Kothagudem Municipal Corporation. The petition, filed by advocate and social worker J Shivaram Prasad of Paloncha, contests the Telangana Municipalities (Amendment) Act, 2025 and a subsequent govt order (GO No. 103, dated May 28, 2025) through which Kothagudem and Paloncha municipalities, along with seven gram panchayats of Sujathanagar mandal, were merged to create the new corporation. Petitioner's counsel Chikkudu Prabhakar argued that the merger is unconstitutional, illegal, and arbitrary as it includes Scheduled Areas, where the 74th constitutional amendment relating to municipalities does not apply. He contended that the move violates the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution, the Panchayat (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996, and several Supreme Court rulings safeguarding tribal rights. He maintained that incorporating predominantly tribal and rural areas into the municipal corporation would deprive local villagers of their constitutional and livelihood rights. The PIL seeks to quash the amendment and the GO, restrain the govt from proceeding with ward delimitation and elections to the new corporation, and suspend all consequential steps until the matter is adjudicated. The bench directed the case to be listed for detailed hearing shortly. Land regularisation plea In a separate matter, the high court on Tuesday heard the state govt's plea to vacate an earlier stay order that has stalled the regularisation of certain agricultural land transactions. The govt submitted that under the Telangana Bhu Bharati Act- 2025, small and marginal farmers who purchased agricultural land through unregistered sale agreements prior to June 2, 2014, and have been in possession for more than 12 years, are eligible for ownership rights. It pointed out that applications for regularisation had earlier been accepted between Oct 12 and Nov 10, 2020, under the old Act, but an interim order of the high court had halted further processing. Appearing for the state, advocate general A Sudarshan Reddy argued that the interim order, passed in 2020, should now be lifted to enable the govt to process these pending applications under the new law. The counsel for the petitioner opposing such regularisation sought time to file a reply. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohiuddin, posted the case to Aug 26 for further hearing. VP polls: KTR offers vote to whoever gets 2L MTs of urea to T

Hyderabad: With both NDA and INDIA bloc announcing their vice-presidential candidates, BRS working president KT Rama Rao has stated that BRS is an independent party and not aligned with either of the groups. The party has four Rajya Sabha Members of Parliament (MPs). He said the party does not have any bosses in Delhi and only the people of Telangana are the bosses of the pink party. . "BRS will support NDA or INDIA bloc, whoever gets two lakh metric tons (MTs) of urea to Telangana before Sept 9," KTR said at a press conference on Wednesday. KTR said no one approached BRS for support as of now, and the party would decide on the support for the candidate in the vice-presidential election. However, he said the party would definitely oppose the candidate proposed by chief minister A Revanth Reddy. You Can Also Check: Hyderabad AQI | Weather in Hyderabad | Bank Holidays in Hyderabad | Public Holidays in Hyderabad | Gold Rates Today in Hyderabad | Silver Rates Today in Hyderabad He questioned why Congress, which was chanting the Backward Classes (BC) mantra all these months, did not find any suitable BC candidate as the vice-presidential candidate for the INDIA bloc. He said Kancha Ilaiah or any other prominent BC leader would have been nominated as their candidate if they really had love towards BCs. KTR stated that the Congress govt was responsible for the unprecedented urea crisis in Telangana. He described the shortage as an "artificial scarcity created by Congress misrule" and demanded immediate corrective measures. He alleged that fertiliser stocks were being diverted and sold in the black market, while lakhs of farmers were forced to queue up for hours across the state. "For the first time in Telangana's history, woman farmers are spending nights outside depots, while farmers are leaving shoes and Aadhaar cards in queues to save their place, and in some cases even facing police cases for demanding fertiliser. This humiliation never happened in KCR's 10-year rule," he said. The BRS leader demanded that the state govt release a white paper on urea supplied by the Centre, stock position in warehouses, actual distribution to farmers, and quantities diverted or missing. He also urged the Centre to order a comprehensive investigation and take strict action against those responsible. He said BRS would soon announce a statewide protest programme from village to state level. "Farmers should not lose hope. BRS will fight until this crisis is resolved. We will not allow the Congress govt to ruin Telangana's farming progress," he declared. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
