India-China flights: IndiGo ready to resume service to Beijing, says CEO Pieter Elbers; airline awaits 'bilateral arrangements'

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers (Image credits: ANI) NEW DELHI: IndiGo has said it is ready to resume direct flights between India and China, as both countries move closer to finalizing bilateral arrangements, CEO Pieter Elbers said on Wednesday. "The airline stands ready to resume these services as soon as bilateral arrangements between the two countries allow," Elbers said, as quoted by PTI, adding that IndiGo, guided by its entrepreneurial spirit, remains committed to identifying and pursuing commercially viable opportunities. Before the coronavirus pandemic, IndiGo operated daily flights from Delhi to Chengdu until February 6, 2020, and from Kolkata to Guangzhou until February 1, 2020. Both Indian and Chinese carriers had offered direct services between the two nations. The flights were suspended following the outbreak of COVID-19 and remained halted due to tensions along the eastern Ladakh border. Air India 's direct flights from Delhi to Shanghai were also suspended in early 2020. Sources said on Tuesday that India and China are in an "advanced stage" of negotiations to resume direct flights soon, reported PTI. Earlier this year, on January 27, the two countries had agreed in principle to restart direct air services as part of efforts to "stabilise and rebuild" bilateral ties.

Electrified Ramanathapuram-Rameswaram section energised

The newly-electrified Ramanathapuram – Rameswaram section was energised in the wee hours of Wednesday. An electric loco trial run has been scheduled in the section after 10 p.m. on Wednesday. The section covers 52 route kilometres (total track length 65 km) and includes two switching stations at Uchipuli and Mandapam. It will soon be submitted for authorisation by the Principal Chief Electrical Engineer, Southern Railway, a statement said. To facilitate further AC loco trials and trial train operations, 25 kV power supply will continue to be maintained in the Overhead Equipment (OHE) system. Safety advisory The OHE system carries a high voltage of 25,000 Volts (25 kV). Public, passengers, and workers are strictly advised to follow safety precautions. They should not touch overhead wires or related equipment, directly or indirectly and maintain a minimum distance of two metres from the OHE to avoid the risk of electric shock, the statement said. Besdies, they should avoid using unfolded umbrellas under OHE during rain or lightning. People have been advised against climbing on locomotives, carriages, or wagons. Several electrocution incidents have occurred due to people taking selfies from the roof. They should also avoid throwing objects onto OHE lines from overbridges or foot overbridges. People should not cut or trim trees near OHE without prior railway permission. Safety at level crossings People should not travel on the top of vehicles and avoid overloading goods vehicles. Height gauges have been provided before level crossings to indicate the maximum permissible height for vehicles, preventing untoward incidents. Carrying metal flagpoles or other tall items above the permitted height can be dangerous when passing under OHE lines, the statement said.

India, China may resume direct flights next month

India and China may resume direct flights as early as next month, people familiar with the talks said, as both nations seek to reset ties. Indian carriers have been asked to prepare services at short notice, with an announcement likely around the SCO summit in China later in Aug. Passenger flights were halted after Covid pandemic, forcing travelers to route via hubs like Hong Kong or Singapore. The move comes as India's ties with the US face strain amid a tariff war. On Monday, Air India said it would suspend its Washington DC service next month citing "operational factors." Relations between India and China soured after 2020 border clashes but have eased with India recently allowing tourist visas for Chinese nationals. Before the suspension, Air India, IndiGo, Air China, China Southern and China Eastern operated direct services. Both Air India and IndiGo are expected to restart China flights, though the exact timing remains uncertain.
