Former India football coach Manolo Marquez resigned in April, but the AIFF convinced him to stay until June. He led India in eight matches with only one win.
Former India men's football head coach Manolo Marquez has revealed that he initially submitted his resignation in April, but the All India Football Federation (AIFF) persuaded him to extend his tenure for a few more months.
The Spaniard took over the national team following the abrupt departure of Igor Stimac in early 2024.
Marquez led India in eight matches during his brief stint, managing only one victory—a 3-0 win over the Maldives in a friendly encounter.
His tenure came to an abrupt end after the AIFF Executive Committee, during its meeting in the national capital, agreed to relieve Marquez, despite having a year left in his contract.
But, it has now been revealed by Marquez himself, that he desired to leave much earlier.
'I resigned in April, but they asked me to do it in the June window. They tried to convince me for a month to continue at the head of the Indian national team," Marquez said in an interview with Spanish outlet Marca.
Marquez's exit came after India's underwhelming start to the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers.
The Blue Tigers were held to a draw against Bangladesh in their opening game and suffered a last-minute 0-1 defeat to Hong Kong, thereby putting both the coach and the team under immense scrutiny.
Despite the disappointing outcomes, Marquez emphasized that the poor results weren't the sole reason for his departure.
'I didn't want to leave because of the bad results. In fact, they tried to convince me for a month to continue. It seems that they have now accepted my initial decision," he added.
'Coaching the Indian national team was the dream of my life. But when you see that all teams do not play by the same rules, you feel that this is not your place."
'I admit that I have done things wrong, but if the results had improved, I would probably still be in office," he explained.
Marquez first arrived in India ahead of the 2020–21 Indian Super League (ISL) season to take charge of Hyderabad FC, and under his leadership, they clinched the ISL title in 2022.
Following his success with Hyderabad, Marquez took over as head coach of FC Goa, eventually leading them to a Super Cup, while also managing the national side in a dual role since early 2024.

Barcelona Extends Szczesny's Contract Till 2027 Amid Ter Stegen Uncertainty

Last Updated: Barcelona confirmed Szczesny's contract until 2027 after a stellar season. Szczesny joined as emergency cover for injured Marc-André ter Stegen, whose future is now uncertain. Barcelona have confirmed that veteran goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2027. The La Liga champions made the announcement on Monday, praising the 35-year-old's pivotal role during a remarkable campaign. 'The Polish goalkeeper staying is recognition and a prize for his great season between the sticks for Barça, after an unexpected arrival in a strange context," the club said in an official statement. Unfinished not done yet. 😤 — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) July 7, 2025 Szczesny had previously retired from professional football before being brought in as emergency cover in October following a long-term injury to Marc-André ter Stegen, who suffered a ruptured patella tendon and missed most of the season. Despite joining under unusual circumstances, Szczesny quickly became a key figure for the team, helping Barcelona secure both the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey. Ter Stegen returned only in the final weeks of the season. Szczesny's renewal, coupled with the club's recent acquisition of Joan García from Espanyol, raises fresh questions about Ter Stegen's role at the club. The 33-year-old German international is one of the highest earners at Barcelona, and Spanish media suggest that the financially challenged club may look to reduce its wage bill by parting ways with him. Barcelona paid €26.34 million ($31 million) in June to sign García on a six-year deal. The club also retains Inaki Peña, further intensifying competition for the goalkeeper position heading into next season. First Published: July 07, 2025, 23:23 IST

Star pacer likely to be dropped from the Indian squad for 3rd Test against England at Lords due to... New Delhi: India performed brilliantly in the Edgbaston Test and defeated England by 336 runs. This was India's first win on this ground. The new generation team led by Shubman Gill made a strong mark in the Test. Now the series is tied at 1-1 and the third Test will be played at Lord's from July 10. Shubman Gill played two brilliant innings of 269 and 161 runs while fast bowler Akash Deep played a decisive role in India's victory by taking 10 wickets in the match. This performance was historic for Team India. Who will return to the team? Indian fast bowling attack leader Jasprit Bumrah was rested in the second Test but captain Gill has confirmed that he will play in the Lord's Test. Now the question arises, which player will be dropped? Who will get a chance, who will be out? After Akash Deep's performance, it is impossible to drop him from the team, while Mohammed Siraj also took seven wickets. Karun Nair, who scored 31 and 26, tried to make an impression in his first number three innings and will get another chance. Washington Sundar and Nitish Reddy will also be retained in the team. Prasidh Krishna may be out Prasidh Krishna may be dropped as part of the possible change. He recorded figures of 0/72 and 1/39 in the match and proved expensive in the first Test as well. Jamie Smith's attack on Prasidh Krishna On the third day of the second Test, England's Jamie Smith thrashed Prasidh Krishna fiercely. In one over, he hit 4 fours and 1 six and scored 23 runs. This was a setback for India after Mohammad Siraj's brilliant start. Worst economy rate in Test history According to a social media post, Prasidh Krishna has now become the bowler with the worst economy rate in Test history (bowling at least 500 balls). His economy rate is more than five, which is considered extremely expensive at the Test level. Who held the previous record? Earlier this shameful record was held by Bangladesh's Shahadat Hossain, who conceded 3731 runs in 38 matches and had an economy rate of 4.16. He represented Bangladesh between 2005 and 2015.
