English second tier gets Champ Rugby rebrand in new 14-club league

English rugby union's second tier will be rebranded as Champ Rugby from next season in a move designed to raise standards and add greater aspiration and jeopardy for clubs. Beneath the glitzy launch, however, many questions still remain.
Simon Gillham, the Tier 2 chair, said that the new-look league of 14 clubs would bring a 'gripping conclusion to the season' – with the top six entering a playoff tournament for the right to face the bottom-placed Premiership club for a promotion place.

However, Gillham confirmed that discussions have not yet concluded on terms for promotion, with minimum operating standards still to be agreed.

The thorny issue of whether a promoted club will have to purchase a P-share, allowing them to participate in the Premiership's financial benefits and governance, has also not been decided.
Ealing Trailfinders did not meet the minimum standards for promotion this season despite winning the Championship, and Gillham refused to speculate on the chances of a club from Champ Rugby going up next year.

However he insisted: 'We will do everything to be at the table and to make sure that there's proper aspiration and there's proper jeopardy. That is absolutely what we are determined to do.'
Another complicating factor is that Rugby Football Union chief executive, Bill Sweeney, recently warned that promotion and relegation 'does not work', while Premiership clubs are angling for a ringfenced league based on franchises.
But Conor O'Shea, who sits on the Tier 2 board as well as being the RFU executive director of performance rugby, said that 'grown-up conversations' would take place to ensure the dream of promotion remained a possibility.
'As it stands, at the end of next season there will be a promotion/relegation playoff based on minimum standards,' said O'Shea. 'We know that only Doncaster met them this year. The discussions are, how do we improve that? How do you make it accessible without breaking clubs?'

'There is a heck of a lot of work to do,' he added. 'Our focus is the step change we want to make in the Champ. It's already a great competition, but we want all the standards across the board to grow.'
Organisers are yet to announce a title sponsor. However with the bottom club being relegated, and the 13th placed club facing a relegation playoff against the National League One runner-up, the hope is that more matches will matter, leading to greater interest and bigger crowds to raise revenue.
As part of England Rugby's strategy to attract new audiences, the launch video is voiced by the rugby influencer and YouTuber Max Brown.

Denver Summit hire former Man City, NYC FC manager Nick Cushing as head coach
Nick Cushing, the former Manchester City women and NYC FC manager, has been appointed as the first head coach of the expansion National Women's Soccer League team Denver Summit FC, who will play their inaugural NWSL season in 2026. Cushing, who won the 2016 English top-flight title during his first spell in charge of Manchester City, will begin work with Denver immediately, as they prepare for NWSL life after it was announced last December that they had been awarded a franchise spot as part of the division's expansion to 16 clubs for 2026. Boston Legacy FC are also joining the NWSL as a new outfit. They have been backed by high-profile investors, including the American skiing icon Mikaela Shiffrin, who is from Colorado, and they have plans to move to a new 14,500-seat purpose-built stadium in 2028. Cushing won six major trophies, including two Women's FA Cups, three League Cups, and Manchester City's sole women's league title to date during his six-year spell at the helm of the English club. He left in 2020 to take up an assistant role at MLS side New York City FC, where he was elevated to head coach in 2022. He returned to Man City as the Women's Super League side's interim head coach in March 2025, overseeing a fourth-placed finish after the sacking of Gareth Taylor. It is understood the chance to return to life and work in the United States with his family was something the 40-year-old particularly wanted, preferring this unique proposition from Denver over interest from other English clubs. Cushing said: 'Denver Summit FC's commitment to building a world-class soccer organisation really inspired me. We have a passionate, committed fanbase and we have to put a team on the field that replicates that. Our team will play an attacking form of the game that excites our stadium and makes things difficult for our opponents. We want to create a winning team as well as a great experience for all of Colorado.' Prior to Cushing's appointment, the new club named Curt Johnson as their general manager. Former Man City, NYCFC coach will lead NWSL expansion Denver Summit FC
Incoming NWSL expansion team Denver Summit FC took a major step Wednesday, naming Nick Cushing as their first-ever head coach ahead of a debut season in 2026. Cushing, a native of England, is the first person to have been the head coach of an MLS and NWSL club, having managed New York City FC from 2022-24. Before that, he had held one of English women's soccer's highest-pressure jobs, leading Manchester City from 2013-20. This past spring, he returned to Manchester City on an interim basis after Gareth Taylor was dismissed in March. "Denver Summit FC's commitment to building a world-class soccer organization really inspired me," Cushing said in a press release. "We have a passionate, committed fanbase and we have to put a team on the field that replicates that. Our team will play an attacking form of the game that excites our stadium and makes things difficult for our opponents." NWSL: Trinity Rodman strikes game-winning goal in first game back from injury Cushing was named the Football Association (FA) Women's Manager of the Year in 2016 after his finest hour, in which Man City won the Women's Super League and the FA Women's Cup in the same season. Cushing's sides also finished in second place four times, losing out each time to Chelsea (who were coached by current U.S. women's national team head coach Emma Hayes throughout that run). During his time at Man City, Cushing played a role in developing six players (Lucy Bronze, Lauren Hemp, Esme Morgan, Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone and Keira Walsh) who played major roles for the England side that won this summer's UEFA Euro 2025 tournament. Under the City Football Group multi-club conglomerate — CFG owns men's teams in 12 countries, alongside several more in the women's game — Cushing moved to men's soccer in 2022, taking over NYCFC after Ronny Deila departed following an MLS Cup triumph the previous year. Under Cushing, NYCFC had an up-and-down three years, going on deep playoff runs in 2022 and 2024 but not qualifying for the postseason in 2023. Cushing was relieved of his duties shortly after the end of the 2024 season. As opposed to the hierarchical nature of operating at CFG clubs, Cushing will step into a blank slate with Denver. Summit FC is an independent club joining NWSL next season alongside Boston Legacy FC. As of now, that includes a roster with zero players, though ESPN reported Monday that a deal for Orlando Pride winger Ally Watt is already done. Per the report, the Colorado Springs native has already been loaned back to Orlando to complete the 2025 season before joining up with Denver in January.
