Content drives a film, not the cast: Sharmiela Mandre
Sharmiela Mandre
, who has begun shooting Dad with superstar Shivarajkumar, opens up to Bangalore Times about her first day on set, the need for stronger women's stories in Kannada cinema, and her vision as both actor and producer.
:
'DAD IS NOT THE TYPICAL MASS ENTERTAINER'
With Shivarajkumar, Dad is on a bigger scale, but it's not one of those larger-than-life commercial films, explains Sharmiela. 'Being a thriller, the approach is different — the content is strong, and that's what drives it. It excites me not just as an actor but also as a viewer,' she says.
'STRONG SCRIPT CONNECTS WITH THE AUDIENCE'
Sharmiela admits that female-centric stories are still rare in Kannada cinema. 'I've come across women-led scripts, but many didn't excite me. I want to be part of more female-driven films. The script is everything. If the writing is strong, people will connect—whether it's led by a man or a woman
'IMPACTFUL ROLES ALWAYS STAND OUT'
On striking a balance between mass and meaningful cinema, Sharmiela explains, 'For an actor, the choice is often a small solo film where nothing stands out, or a big-budget project with an impactful role.
For me, if the role adds weight to a larger film, I'd love to do it. With the pan-India culture, people remember strong roles, no matter the screen time.'
It's my second time working with Shivanna, so it didn't feel like a new environment. He makes everyone comfortable on set; his energy is amazing, you automatically get involved as a co-actor. It didn't feel like work, it felt like the best shoot ever
Sharmiela Mandre
'GOOD WRITING IS WHAT STAYS'
As a producer, Sharmiela is equally invested in content. 'I don't want to make the usual big-scale commercial films. I'd like to start with something grounded — maybe a family drama or a fresh subject with newcomers. Today's audience wants to be engaged from the start. Good writing is what stays, and that's what I'm chasing — both on screen and behind it,' she says.

Anita Advani says Rajesh Khanna's family abandoned him yet inherited his entire property while she got nothing: 'You can't escape Karma'
Anita Advani, who recently revealed that she was secretly married to India's first superstar Rajesh Khanna and lived together for nearly 12 years, has revealed new details about his final years, his family's absence, and the property battle that continues to this day. 'Everyone had left him' When asked why his family did not support him despite having such a 'beautiful family' — two actress daughters, Twinkle and Rinke, son-in-law Akshay Kumar , and wife Dimple Kapadia — Anita said on REEL Meet REAL, 'She (Dimple) had left him in 1982, and for 30 years, she had no connection with him. He had already lost everything by then; everyone had left him. He was stuck in between. He wasn't even getting a divorce, so he remained trapped. No divorce, no resolution.' Family inherited property, not her Despite years of togetherness, Anita said she was left with nothing. 'The discussion did take place but in the end, when he was not even conscious, everything was done in such a way that it went completely out of control — beyond anyone's reach, including his own. Yet, the family got his entire property. That in itself is a big story.' She added that she has been locked in legal battles ever since, with the case still ongoing in the High Court. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo 'Recently, I even received a statement from the Supreme Court. Anita Advani claims right over Rajesh Khanna's bungalow 'No one takes anything with them' Reflecting on greed and betrayal, Anita said, 'No one takes anything with them when they go. So why cheat like this? No one can eat or carry so much money after death. Then why such greed? Every relationship deserves respect. In my heart, I know — everyone should get what they rightfully deserve. Karma comes around on its own. No matter how smart you think you are, you can't escape karma.' Bond with Anju Mahendru The conversation also touched upon Rajesh Khanna's past relationships, particularly with actress Anju Mahendru, who was in his life before his marriage to Dimple. Clarifying her equation with Anju, Anita said, 'Anju is a very good friend of mine. I often visit her; we've known each other for years now. She never asked for anything. She told me herself she didn't want anything. She is a wonderful human being, like a sister to me. ' On whether injustice was done to Anju too, Anita responded, 'She herself said she didn't want to marry him. The truth is, he was a very difficult man. A difficult person, no doubt about it. Ask any woman who was in his life, and she will say the same. That's why Anju ultimately decided not to marry him.'
