Egyptian Ambassador, Russian Deputy FM Discuss Regional Crises
As part of his farewell meetings with Russian officials, Egyptian Ambassador to Moscow, Nazih El-Nagari, met on Monday with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister (FM) Sergey Vershinin.
The meeting addressed avenues of bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Russia across various fields and ways to further enhance them.
Both sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern, particularly the crisis in the Gaza Strip.
In this regard, they emphasized the urgent need to reach a ceasefire, end Israel's aggression against the enclave that has persisted for nearly two years, and prepare for political efforts aimed at establishing an independent Palestinian state in line with international law.
The discussions further touched upon the situation in Syria, with the Egyptian Ambassador underscoring Russia's significant role in the Arab region and the Middle East, in light of its historical and ongoing support for Arab rights.
The two officials also reviewed the latest developments surrounding the Ukraine crisis following the Alaska Summit.

Egypt backs Saudi initiatives supporting Palestinian cause: El-Sisi to bin Salman
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed Egypt's support for Saudi initiatives to achieve a just resolution of the Palestinian cause, including the outcomes of the Two-State Solution conference co-hosted by the Kingdom in late July. This came during a meeting between the Egyptian president and Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman in Neom, Saudi Arabia on Thursday. Earlier on Thursday, the Saudi Crown Prince received President El-Sisi at NEOM Bay Airport at the start of his official visit to the Kingdom. According to the Egyptian presidency, both leaders agreed during their talks on rejecting any attempts to displace Palestinian people from their land or to reimpose Israeli military occupation on the Gaza Strip. They also reviewed Egypt's efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza in coordination with various parties, stressing the need to accelerate the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the strip, and secure the exchange of captives and detainees. El-Sisi and bin Salman further emphasised the necessity of halting Israeli violations against the Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. The meeting between the two leaders comes amid intensive Egyptian and Qatari efforts to secure a ceasefire in the 22-month-old Gaza war between Israel and Hamas. It also comes as Tel Aviv pounds north Gaza, as it gears up to launch a major assault on Gaza City amid plans to reoccupy the entire strip. Cairo and Doha have intensified their mediation with various international partners to halt the war in Gaza, deliver urgent humanitarian aid to the strip, and prevent further deterioration of the catastrophic situation as famine grips 2.3 million Palestinians in the strip. On Tuesday, Cairo and Doha confirmed that Hamas has agreed to a 60-day truce proposal that was previously agreed to by Israel. Tel Aviv has not responded yet. In late July, Saudi Arabia and France co-chaired a high-level UN conference in New York in an attempt to revive stalled talks on a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. Egyptian-Saudi ties According to the Egyptian presidency, both sides addressed bilateral cooperation, where they affirmed the importance of strengthening joint investments and expediting the launch of the Egyptian-Saudi Higher Coordination Council as a comprehensive framework for advancing ties at all levels. El-Sisi and bin Salman also agreed to initiate further partnerships in the fields of industrial integration, localisation of technological industries, transportation, new and renewable energy, and urban development. During the meeting, the Egyptian president expressed profound appreciation and deep gratitude for the warm welcome and generous hospitality he received during his visit, praising the close historical bonds linking Cairo and Riyadh. He also expressed keenness to continue building on the qualitative leap achieved in bilateral relations, in a way that contributes to strengthening economic and trade partnership and aligns with the aspirations of both peoples. In turn, the Saudi Crown Prince expressed the Kingdom's pride in its deep-rooted fraternal ties with Egypt, reaffirming his keenness to enhance frameworks of bilateral cooperation across various fields, and elevate them towards broader and more sustainable horizons that serve the interests of both nations. In 2024, trade between Egypt and Saudi Arabia grew by 18.8 percent to $6.5 billion, up from $5.5 billion in 2023, according to Head of the Egyptian Commercial Office in Saudi Arabia Osama Basha . He also noted that Saudi investments in Egypt reached $37 billion across more than 6,830 companies, while Egyptian investments in Saudi Arabia totalled $5 billion through 805 companies. Egypt now ranks seventh among Saudi Arabia's largest trading partners, Basha said. Both leaders also discussed the latest regional and international developments. According to the Egyptian presidency, El-Sisi and bin Salman stressed the importance of supporting the stability of the region's states, preserving their territorial integrity, and safeguarding their national institutions. The Egyptian president and Saudi Crown Prince affirmed their determination to continue coordination and consultations amid the rapid developments in the Middle East. For his part, bin Salman praised Egypt's pivotal role in consolidating regional security, stability, and development, based on its historical influence and strategic position. Arab League Condemns New Israeli Settlement Plan Near Jerusalem
H-Tayea Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit strongly condemned Israel's decision to move forward with the controversial E1 settlement plan east of Jerusalem, describing it as a serious threat to the two state solution and to the prospects of establishing a viable and contiguous Palestinian state. In a statement issued by his spokesperson Gamal Roshdy, Aboul Gheit warned that the project would deepen the fragmentation of the West Bank and undermine the geographical continuity essential for the future Palestinian state. UPDATED: Israeli airstrikes intensify as army prepares to invade Gaza City - War on Gaza
Israel hammered Gaza City and its outskirts overnight, residents said Thursday, as the army announced it had taken initial steps in its push to takeover the city. The newly approved plan authorises the call-up of roughly 60,000 reservists, deepening fears that the campaign will worsen the already catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. "We are not waiting. We have begun the preliminary actions, and already now, IDF (army) troops are holding the outskirts of Gaza City," said the Israeli military. Israel's plans to expand the fighting and seize Gaza City have sparked international outcry as well as domestic opposition. The Red Cross became the latest voice to condemn the plan on Thursday, calling it "intolerable". Ahead of the offensive, the Israeli military said the call-up of the reservists would begin in early September, adding the second phase of operation "Gideon's Chariots" had begun. Gaza City residents described relentless bombardments overnight. "The house shakes with us all night long -- the sound of explosions, artillery, warplanes, ambulances, and cries for help is killing us," one of them, Ahmad al-Shanti, told AFP. "The sound is getting closer, but where would we go?" Another resident, Amal Abdel-Aal, said she watched the heavy strikes on the area, a week after being displaced from her home in Gaza City's Al-Sabra neighbourhood. "No one in Gaza has slept -- not last night, not for a week. The artillery and air strikes in the east never stop. The sky flashes all night long," she added. Gaza civil defence agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal said air strikes and artillery fire overnight targeted areas to the northwest and southeast of Gaza City. 'Nowhere safe to go' Late Wednesday, the Israeli military detailed a range of operations across the Gaza Strip in recent weeks. It said the manoeuvres and strikes "created the conditions" for the military to intensify pressure on Hamas and lay the groundwork for the next stages of the campaign. The UN humanitarian agency has warned the Israeli plan to expand military operations in Gaza City would have "a horrific humanitarian impact" on the already exhausted population. "Forcing hundreds of thousands to move south is a recipe for further disaster and could amount to forcible transfer," OCHA said. The UN Human Rights office in the Palestinian territories also voiced concern. "Hundreds of families have been forced to flee, including many children, persons with disabilities, and older people, with nowhere safe to go," it said. Others reportedly "remain trapped, completely cut off from food, water and medicine supplies", it added. The Israeli military said this week it had also begun informing medical personnel and aid groups in northern Gaza to start making evacuation plans and transferring their equipment to the south. As Israel tightened its grip on Gaza City's outskirts, meditators continued to wait for an official Israeli reaction to their latest ceasefire proposal that Hamas accepted earlier this week. 'Ball' in Israel's court Israel and Hamas have held a string of indirect negotiations throughout the nearly two-year conflict, paving the way for a pair of short ceasefires during which Israeli hostages were freed in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Of the 251 captives kidnapped during Hamas's October 2023 attack on the Gaza Battalion in the Gaza Envelope, 49 are still in Gaza, including 27 believed killed by Israeli airstrikes on the strip. Sources from Hamas and its ally Islamic Jihad told AFP this week that the latest ceasefire proposal calls for the release of 10 captives and 18 bodies from Gaza. The remaining captives would be released in a second phase alongside talks for a wider settlement. Qatar, Egypt, and the United States have overseen several rounds of shuttle diplomacy. Qatar said the latest proposal was "almost identical" to an earlier version approved by Israel, while Egypt said Monday that "the ball is now in its (Israel's) court". Late Wednesday, Hamas lambasted the plans to take control of Gaza City, saying in a statement it showed its "blatant disregard" for efforts to broker a ceasefire and hostage release deal.
