Men's College World Series 2025: Coastal Carolina, Oregon State notch wins, LSU on pace for record jello shot sales

Oregon State had a win in hand entering the ninth inning, and didn't let some misadventures stop them from advancing in the winner's bracket.

Gavin Turley hit a walkoff double to give his team a 4-3 win after blowing a two-run lead in the top of the ninth. Aiva Arquette, one of the top prospects of the 2025 MLB Draft, set it up with a one-out single then motored first-to-home on Turley's line drive into left field.
Turley and Arquette were the heroes of the bottom of the ninth and the goats of the top. Defensive blunders from both players allowed Louisville to tie the game, with a missed dive from Turley turning into a triple and a bad throw from Arquette giving the Cardinals another man on third, who would later scored.
The miscues nearly spoiled a great outing from star freshman Dax Whitney, who struck out nine across 5 1/3 innings while allowing three hits and a single run. The lanky right-hander with big heat and a bigger curveball outlasted the Cardinals' Patrick Forbes in a battle of future MLB Draft picks.
Whitney was ranked as the No. 56 prospect of the 2024 MLB Draft by MLB Pipeline. The No. 57 prospect, Boston Bateman, got $2.5 million from the San Diego Padres. Whitney has more than helped his stock this season, projecting as a future first-round pick after earning second-team Freshman All-American honors.

Curiously, the first 15 hits of the game were all singles, with Rose getting the first extra-base hit of the game with his leadoff triple in the ninth inning.
The Beavers got their first runs when they opened the bottom of the fourth inning with four straight singles. Louisville got one run back in the sixth inning with its own rally, but handed Oregon State an insurance run when shortstop Alex Alicea booted a potential double-play ball with the bases loaded.
Oregon State advances to face Coastal Carolina in the next round, while Louisville will get Arizona in the loser's bracket on Sunday.

The Chanticleers, who came into the CWS with the best record in Division I, overcame a 4-4 tie with a few clutch doubles in the bottom of the eighth to keep their 24-game winning streak alive.

It was a quiet first inning for both teams. But in the second inning, Coastal Carolina had a huge opportunity, loading the bases off a muffed infield catch by Arizona pitcher Owen Kramkowski. Outfielder Wells Sykes took advantage, hitting a two-run single to put the Chanticleers on the board.
Arizona came alive in the top of the fourth, starting with a solo homer from shortstop Mason White. Then the Wildcats hit back-to-back doubles, sending catcher Adonys Guzman home to tie the game 2-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, a single from Chanticleers right fielder Blagen Pado sent second baseman Blake Barthol home for a 3-2 lead.
Coastal Carolina is known for getting hit by pitches; the team has been hit by an NCAA-leading 170 pitches this season. But in the sixth inning, it was Arizona who took advantage of getting hit. Chanticleers reliever Cameron Flukey hit three batters, allowing the Wildcats to fill the bases and score a game-tying run before recording an out.

Then a grounder from second baseman Garen Caulfield sent White home to give Arizona a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Chanticleers catcher Caden Bodine drove in a run to make it 4-4.
The two teams stayed locked in a tie for the next two innings off some strong defensive play, with Flukey settling in. In the bottom of the eighth, with the Chanticleers sitting on two outs, it looked like the game would come down to the final inning. Then Coastal Carolina's offense broke through with a series of doubles.
It started with Sykes getting on second on a hit that landed right on the line. Left fielder Sebastian Alexander then hit an RBI single to send Sykes home for a 5-4 lead. Another huge double from Barthol sent Alexander and Bodine, who was intentionally walked, home to give the Chanticleers a 7-4 lead heading into the ninth.
Arizona wasn't done yet, as designated hitter Andrew Cain earned a double with some bold running, and first baseman Tommy Splaine got a base hit. But a huge double-play ended the game and sent Coastal Carolina to the winners' bracket.

The men's College World Series has one of the most entertaining side plots of any of the NCAA championship: The Jell-O shot competition at Rocco's, where patrons compete annually to see which school's fan base can consume the most Jell-O shots.
LSU, which notoriously bought 68,888 Jell-O shots in 2023, is off to an early lead during the first day of the CWS. After gobbling up 943 shots earlier in the day, the Tigers fans have now reached 1,993 shots as of 5 p.m. CT. According to the scorekeepers, that tally is far ahead of last year's pace, setting LSU up for another record victory.
However, Coastal Carolina and Murray State are also on a roll, coming in at 1,137 and 1,274 shots, respectively. The Chanticleers held the lead in that head-to-head matchup earlier on Friday, but the Racers have pulled ahead to second place after a gelatin-filled afternoon.
Regardless of who wins, all three schools are on currently pace to break LSU's 2023 record.

Fantasy Football Mock Draft: 10-team Superflex (3 WRs) — here are the results
If you want to get better at something, it's all about putting in the reps. Phil Dunphy recognized this years ago. Dance until your feet hurt; sing until your lungs hurt; act until you're William Hurt. The fantasy football version of this — keep drafting, keep drafting, keep drafting. And know there's always a mock draft available, whenever you want it. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] I have some Superflex leagues coming later this month, and with an eye towards that, I dialed up a 10-team Superflex mock on the weekend. It's a half-point PPR format that requires 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, PK, 1 PK, 1 DEF and the glorious 1 Superflex, a player who can be a quarterback, running back, receiver or tight end. Basically, these wind up being two-quarterback leagues (since QBs score the most points), but you're allowed to pivot off a QB in that slot if injuries or bye weeks force you to. It's my favorite format, nothing's even close. I landed the No. 1 pick for this 10-team mock, done using the Yahoo Fantasy Plus Instant Mock Draft tool — let's see how it all went down. Round 1: WR Ja'Marr Chase, Bengals This would be a snap-call in a standard league, but there's some thought required given that we're doing Superflex today. There's a strong case for Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen in this spot. I decided, with the league being 10 managers, I could eschew QB for a bit and still feel strong in that area. Chase dominates at WR and we require three wideouts in this format, so that's how I break the tie. To no great surprise, the Big 4 quarterbacks were all gone by the time the draft returned to me. That's standard. In some Superflex leagues, the QB push might be even stronger. Round 2: WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, Lions Round 3: RB Ashton Jeanty, Raiders Because the league didn't steer completely into QBs, I'm going to play a little chicken and trust I can still be strong at that spot without tapping it here. It's a luxury to roster the Sun God as my WR2 — one of the most consistent scorers in fantasy, the perfect drumbeat — and it was fun to add a Jeanty share, something I haven't been able to do much this summer. The Raiders should have a concentrated usage tree, and although Chip Kelly had a checkered earlier run as an NFL head coach, I still trust him as an offensive play designer. If I had tapped into the quarterback market, Joe Burrow obviously would have been my choice. I also briefly considered tapping George Kittle as a vanity tight end. Round 4: RB Chase Brown, Bengals Round 5: QB Bo Nix, Broncos I originally thought I would double-tap the quarterback position here, but when Brown slipped, I felt obligated to take advantage. This is a reminder that every draft plan should be in pencil — so you can adapt to the flow of the draft and take advantage of opportunities that arise. The Bengals once again look like fantasy football's perfect Carnival team, an offense that will move the ball, and tied to a defense that won't stop many opponents. The Bengals also have a very tight concentration for their touch distribution. Nix and Baker Mayfield were the QBs I considered, with Nix getting the nod because he's younger and a better runner — that likely means a better floor. Round 6: WR Jaylen Waddle, Dolphins Round 7: QB Baker Mayfield, Buccaneers One of my fantasy concepts says that when you consider a player in one slot and then the room gives you that same option a round or two later, it's often the right pick. So although I have not been drafting Mayfield proactively this year, the value is too good to pass up. Miami's offense concerns me somewhat but Waddle looks like a safe play, five years younger than Tyreek Hill and still capable of a top 10 receiver season. Consider that Waddle was the WR7 just three years ago, and he's merely entering his age-27 season. Round 8: TE Tucker Kraft, Packers Round 9: RB David Montgomery, Lions I like the way these two picks mix together — Kraft is the upside grab, coming off a 14.1 YPC season and seven juicy touchdowns — while Montgomery is more of a boring veteran floor play, the No. 2 back in Detroit but still carrying a solid touch and touchdown floor. Round 10: WR Jauan Jennings, 49ers Round 11: QB Michael Penix Jr., Falcons At this point the focus is trying to find picks that excite you, locating players who have the ability to smash their ADP if things fall right. Jennings was dynamic when pushed into the starting lineup last year, and now he's tied to an offense that lost Deebo Samuel Sr. and isn't sure when Brandon Aiyuk is coming back. Penix and the Falcons could be another Carnival offense, tied to a mostly-indoor schedule and perhaps pushed by a shaky defense. I didn't get Drake London in this draft, but he's also been a common target of mine. Round 12: RB Jaylen Warren, Steelers Round 13: WR Emeka Egbuka, Buccaneers Warren is the more versatile back in Pittsburgh, and we know OC Arthur Smith never met a running play he didn't like. Egbuka's plausible upside case gets stronger when you consider that Chris Godwin might miss several games to open the season. Round 14: PK Brandon Aubrey, Cowboys Round 15: D/ST Denver Broncos This is where it's fun to pick in tandem — if you have to fill at kicker and defense, why not get the presumed best at the position? Aubrey's range is the parking lot and he has a climate-controlled schedule. I would probably stream at the D/ST spot, but Denver has what I always want from my drafted defense, favorable matchups to start. The Broncos host rookie QB Cam Ward in Week 1, then travel to Indianapolis and attack either Anthony Richardson Sr. or Daniel Jones. Sounds good to me. Round 16: RB Braelon Allen, Jets Allen obviously has a fun upside if anything happens to Breece Hall (don't overlook the possibility of a trade), and even if the Jets keep all their backs, Allen has the potential to become the team's designated scorer at the goal line, their version of David Montgomery. Final Roster: QB: Nix, Mayfield, Penix RB: Jeanty, Brown, Montgomery, Warren, Allen WR: Chase, St. Brown, Waddle, Jennings, Egbuka TE: Kraft PK: Aubrey DST: Broncos Okay, I love this roster, but in a 10-teamer, you're supposed to. I eschewed a second tight end, feeling it was more important to get another bite at the RB apple, but in a league of this size, I could probably find a useful TE2 on the wire (19 were selected in all). I didn't go after QB super early, but still landed two candidates likely to finish in the top 10, along with the upside play of Penix. My starters at RB and WR look very strong, and that often correlates to fantasy success. I think even Phil Dunphy would sign off on this team.

Xavien Howard's agent says 4-time Pro Bowler signing with the Colts
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard is signing with the Indianapolis Colts, his agent David Canter announced Monday in a social media post. Colts officials have not yet made an announcement. The 32-year-old Howard was cut by the Miami Dolphins in February 2024 and did not play last year after suffering multiple injuries leading up to his release. Indy believes Howard can make an impact, though, because of his previous history with Lou Anarumo, the Colts new defensive coordinator. Anarumo coached Miami's defensive backs in 2016 and 2017 — Howard's first two seasons in the league. Indy was seeking help in the secondary because of injuries. Pro Bowl cornerback Kenny Moore II has missed time with an injured knee and another starter, Jaylon Jones, was taken off the practice field after hurting his hamstring. Rooke cornerback Justin Walley, a third-round draft pick, also was competing for a starting job until suffering a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament before the preseason opener. And cornerback JuJu Brents is out with a hamstring injury. Howard led the NFL interceptions twice during his career — picking off seven passes in 2018 and adding 10 more in 2020. Rams QB Matthew Stafford ends mystery, returns to practice
The Los Angeles Rams welcomed back their franchise quarterback on Monday. The Rams posted a video of Matthew Stafford walking onto the practice field dressed in full pads. Stafford's practice participation is great news for a Rams team as they ramp up toward the regular season. Prior to Monday, Stafford's hadn't been able to participate in training camp because of an aggravated disk in his back. The veteran quarterback was supposed to practice in some capacity on Monday, Aug. 11, after a throwing session, but he didn't 'feel great' following the workout. Stafford was scheduled to have another workout on Saturday, Aug. 16, but the Rams have been discreet about whether or not the workout happened. The 37-year-old quarterback is entering his fifth season with the Rams and 17th overall. Stafford and the Rams kickoff the regular season in less than three weeks against the Houston Texans on Sept. 7 at SoFi Stadium. Jimmy Garoppolo is the team's backup quarterback. Stetson Bennett is No. 3 on the depth chart. Bennett started both preseason games for the Rams. He passed for 324 yards, three touchdowns and had only one interception in a 23-22 exhibition win over the Los Angeles Chargers. However, neither Garoppolo nor Bennett can run the Rams' offense like Stafford. Stafford is the engine to the Rams' offensive attack. Stafford was named the Rams MVP last year after he completed 340-of-517 pass attempts for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns. Stafford helped the Rams win Super Bowl 56 in his first season in Los Angeles.
