Youth must take responsibility to protect democracy
Tirupati: Former High Court Chief Justice Jasti Chelameswar emphasized that India's democracy is facing a crisis and called upon the youth to take responsibility for protecting it. He was speaking at the inauguration of the 17th National Conference of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) in Tirupati on Friday.
Justice Chelameswar addressed key issues including electoral reforms, the Indian Constitution, the parliamentary system, and democracy. He expressed concern that even after 75 years of Independence, poverty and discrimination remain widespread, obstructing the nation's development.
He criticized successive governments for spending thousands of crores without effectively addressing hunger or ensuring inclusive growth. He urged youth to take a proactive role in tackling the pressing challenges confronting society.
Chelameswar also highlighted the neglect of the agricultural sector and the government's failure to implement the Swaminathan Committee recommendations, which has deeply affected farmers. He noted that, on average, 35 farmers commit suicide daily due to distress, while youth continue to face unemployment and lack of livelihood opportunities.
He called for a united and relentless struggle for the welfare of farmers and the younger generation.
Akhila Bharatiya Kisan Sabha General Secretary Ravula Venkaiah echoed similar concerns, urging young farmers to prepare for a long battle to demand fair prices and resist anti-farmer, pro-corporate government policies.
CPI National Secretary Dr K Narayana, Sukhjindar Mahesari, Vali Ulla Khadri, Arun, Lenin, Aarti, and Periyar Swamy were also present at the event.

‘Be like Colonel Sofiya Qureshi: BJP's minority wing to spread message at Shaheen Bagh chaupal today
In an attempt to motivate Muslim women to join the Indian Army, the BJP's Minority Morcha will be organising a 'minority chaupal' in Shaheen Bagh, Tuesday. Bombay high court's Aurangabad bench hears Somnath Suryawanshi custodial death petition' Prakash Ambedkar seeks SIT probe
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar on Monday raised the demand for a court-monitored independent SIT to probe into Somnath Suryawanshi's death in judicial custody on Dec 16, 2024. Ambedkar raised the demand as the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay high court heard a petition filed by Vijayabai Suryawanshi, mother of Somnath Suryawanshi (35). Somnath was arrested in connection with the protests that had turned violent over the desecration of the Indian Constitution monument in Parbhani. Appearing for the family in the court, VBA chief Ambedkar, besides demanding a court-monitored independent Special Investigation Team (SIT), also spoke about the "lack of a clear legal mechanism" to take further action under Section 196 of BNSS. The matter was heard by the HC division bench of Justice Vibha Kankanwadi and Justice Sanjay Deshmukh. Following the SOP, a CID committee was appointed by the state govt to investigate the custodial death and prepared a report. However, the high court during one of the earlier hearings stayed the CID's proceedings before the report could be finalised. Chief govt pleader Amarjeetsingh Girase, who represented the state during the hearing, said, "During the course of Monday's hearing, we on behalf of the state submitted that the inquiry by the SIT was completed. We (SIT) recorded the statements of more than 190 people and collected all relevant documents as well as electronic evidence crucial for this case. As the HC during the last hearing directed us not to finalise anything, today we sought permission to submit the final inquiry report. "There is a void in the law about what should follow after a judicial magistrate conducts an inquiry in custodial death cases. "Since the custodial death occurred while Somnath was in judicial custody, it is inappropriate for the same police machinery to carry out the probe. The court heard our request positively. We are expecting an order on this soon," he added. Authorities had initially attributed Somnath's death to cardiac arrest. A postmortem report, however, indicated injuries consistent with physical assault. 'No revolution in the justice delivery mechanism can come without policy interventions. The governance frameworks that ensure human oversight, algorithmic transparency, and accountability for technology-mediated decisions should be developed,' he said. The CJI laid out a comprehensive vision for a more inclusive and responsive legal system, underpinned by digital innovation. 'Access to justice represents the backbone of any fair and equitable legal system. It ensures that all individuals, regardless of their socioeconomic status, geographic location, or personal circumstances, can effectively participate in and benefit from legal processes,' he said. He said in a country where more than two-thirds of the population lives in rural areas and over 121 languages are spoken as mother tongues, ensuring equitable access to the courts is both a constitutional obligation and a moral imperative. He highlighted the foresight of Constitution makers, who enshrined mechanisms to guarantee access to justice, including Articles 32 and 226, which empower citizens to directly approach the Supreme Court and high courts for the protection of their rights. 'Recognizing access to justice as the cornerstone of any democracy, the framers of the Indian Constitution, with foresight, understood that without meaningful access to legal recourse, the rights enshrined within the Constitution would remain mere hollow promises for millions of citizens,' he said. 'Technology has become the bridge between the constitutional promise of justice and the lived experience of citizens,' he said. The CJI referred to several key initiatives that have digitally transformed the Indian judiciary and said now video conferencing has become a permanent fixture in courts and enables lawyers from remote areas to argue cases before the Supreme Court without costly and time-consuming travel. Barriers to access to justice are now being diluted with the help of technology, he said. 'Video conferencing technology has made the most impact on accessibility to the court. A lawyer practising in rural Bihar or rural Maharashtra can now appear before the Supreme Court without the expense and time of travelling to Delhi. 'It has democratized access to the country's highest court, ensuring that geographical location no longer determines the quality of legal representation available to citizens. Vulnerable witnesses, particularly children, can now testify without being physically present in intimidating courtroom environments,' he said. The CJI said with the use of technology, citizens can now track case status, download court orders, and view hearing schedules through the Case Information System, eliminating the need for physical presence. He also referred to the SUVAS (Supreme Court Vidhik Anuvaad Software) and said that this AI-powered translation tool converts legal documents into nine regional languages, empowering non-English speakers with access to critical information. Justice Gavai lauded the efforts of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), which leverages technology to extend its services to the most vulnerable. 'These innovations are not just conveniences; they are lifelines for those who would otherwise be left outside the judicial system,' the CJI noted. He hailed the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) as a game-changer in judicial transparency and performance monitoring. As of early 2025, the NJDG tracks more than 23 crore cases and 22 crore orders from over 18,000 courts, enabling data-backed policymaking and identifying procedural bottlenecks, he said. The CJI, however, cautioned that technology must not become a new barrier to justice as 'the digital divide is real'. Without equitable access to internet connectivity, devices, and digital literacy, marginalized communities risk further exclusion, he said. 'As we readily integrate technology in our quest to make justice more accessible, we must also acknowledge that technology can act as a double-edged sword, which may also lead to unparalleled divides. 'A primary concern is the digital divide, where unequal access to internet connectivity, devices, and digital literacy can lead to the exclusion of marginalized communities who already face barriers to justice.
