New Delhi [India], June 2 (ANI): Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday extended heartfelt greetings to the people of Telangana on Statehood Day, highlighting that the state has exemplified remarkable progress across multiple sectors while preserving its resilience and unique cultural identity.

In a post on X, Dhankar wrote,'Heartiest greetings to people of Telangana on the Statehood day.'
'Known for its resilience and its distinct cultural identity, the state has exemplified remarkable progress across various sectors, underscoring its commitment to development and welfare. May the state and its people continue to thrive, achieving greater heights in the years to come,' the Vice-President added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended greetings on Telangana Statehood Day. He noted the state's contribution to the nation and wished the people 'success and prosperity'.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, 'Greetings to the wonderful people of Telangana on their Statehood Day. The state is known for making innumerable contributions to national progress.'
The Prime Minister said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in the Centre has boosted 'Ease of Living' in the state.
'Over the last decade, the NDA Government has undertaken many measures to boost 'Ease of Living' for the state's people. May the state's people be blessed with success and prosperity,' PM Modi posted.
In a message shared on social media, President Droupadi Murmu lauded Telangana's journey as a young state swiftly emerging as a hub of cultural pride and economic progress.
In a post on X, the President of India wrote, 'Warm greetings to the people of Telangana on Statehood Day! This young State has a rich cultural heritage and a vibrant modern ecosystem of economic and technological development. I wish that Telangana's people march on the path of progress and prosperity.'
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also shared his message in both English and Telugu, celebrating Telangana's cultural richness and the hardworking spirit of its people.
In a post on X, Union Minister Shah wrote,' On Telangana statehood day, warm greetings to our brothers and sisters of the state. With its rich culture, heritage, and hardworking people, Telangana shines brightly on India's ethnocultural map. May the state reach new heights of prosperity.'
Telangana was officially formed on 2 June 2014. Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K Chandrashekar Rao was elected as the state's first Chief Minister, following elections in which the party secured a majority. (ANI)

Kamal Haasan, and the Tamil vs Kannada over-reaction
The cacophony of outrage over Kamal Haasan's remark that Kannada was 'born out of Tamil' has reached an unseemly but not unexpected crescendo — it follows a pattern seen whenever the politics of language and the language of hurt sentiments are invoked. It has gone all the way to the Karnataka High Court, which advised Haasan to apologise and questioned his credentials to make such a statement, asking, 'Are you a historian, linguist?' But there are other pertinent questions, which the Court didn't ask: Is such escalation over a misinformed comment proportionate or justified? Does one need to be an expert, or even correct, to exercise the right to free speech? Is this an appropriate use of the state's time and resources? The fallout of Haasan's remark saw apologies demanded, protests held, effigies burnt, a police complaint filed, a state minister calling for a ban on screening the actor-politician's film Thug Life in Karnataka and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce promptly obliging him. There is a history and a context to this mobilisation of linguistic grievance: In the present, it is exacerbated by growing resentment over the presence of people from other states, particularly Hindi speakers. Alongside this is an older anxiety over the dominance of Tamil speakers in Bengaluru, in the backdrop of the regional rivalry between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Looming over it all, but sometimes unmentioned in the context of North-South and South-South tussles, is the shadow of English. All this — with parallels across multiple states, for instance in neighbouring Maharashtra — creates fertile ground for a politics of relentless prickliness that makes mountains out of molehills. It can lead to violence, and often has. Haasan is wrong about Kannada and Tamil, and appears to be ill-informed about the history of the Dravidian languages. One did not come from the other — the two are better characterised as sisters. He has refused to apologise. The question is not whether or not he's been wise. What's questionable is the clamour for an apology — it comes from a place of parochialism. What is needed, instead, is an imagination that is broad enough to accommodate the aspirations of regional and linguistic subnationalism and address people's legitimate concerns about the future of their mother tongues. Also needed is a self-confidence to engage fruitfully with an increasingly cosmopolitan reality. Political leaders could do worse than take a leaf out of Karnataka Deputy CM D K Shivakumar's book. In one of the most sensible responses to this controversy, he said, 'We are not enemies; we are all friends. I don't want to comment on it because I don't know the history of that issue.'

Blake Lively WITHDRAWS 'emotional distress' claims against Justin Baldoni in 'It Ends With Us' legal battle
Blake Lively has formally withdrawn two claims against actor and director Justin Baldoni in their ongoing legal battle following their collaboration on the 2024 romantic drama It Ends With Us. The withdrawn claims specifically related to allegations of "emotional distress", in the actress' lawsuit against her director filed in December 2024. According to Variety, Judge Lewis Liman, who is overseeing the case in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, confirmed that Lively's claims for emotional distress would be thrown out. The judge noted that the withdrawal was based on 'the plaintiff's representation that the relevant claims will be withdrawn,' and as a result, the director's motion to compel Lively to release her medical and therapy records was denied. Lively initially filed a lawsuit, accusing Baldoni of sexual harassment and orchestrating a public smear campaign. In response, Baldoni's team moved to access Lively's mental health records, arguing that such evidence was essential to counter her claims of 'severe emotional distress and pain, humiliation, embarrassment, belittlement, frustration and mental anguish'. However, the court noted that without the emotional distress claims, those records were no longer relevant. Judge Liman instructed both parties to decide whether the dismissal of these claims would be permanent (with prejudice) or temporary (without prejudice), and offered the actress the opportunity to choose to try to reach an agreement with Baldoni. If no formal dismissal is made, Lively will be barred from introducing any related evidence. Lively's attorneys, Esra Hudson and Mike Gottlieb, criticised Baldoni's legal team for their approach which they claim is 'a press stunt'. In a statement to the media, her lawyers said, 'Ms. Lively has offered to dismiss those claims because they are no longer necessary and she will continue to pursue emotional distress damages through other active claims in her lawsuit, including sexual harassment and retaliation. ' Meanwhile, Baldoni is suing both Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds for $400 million. He alleges the actress attempted to extort him and later defamed him through statements published in The New York Times. The legal battle now involves six separate lawsuits in various courts. Ladakh: Statehood issue yet to be addressed, say Kargil leaders
With the Union government notifying new rules for Ladakh, allowing reservation in government jobs for locals, a 15-year residency requirement for domicile status, one-third of seats in hill councils for women, and five official languages as part of efforts to safeguard the region's interests, the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) has said statehood is a big issue for it. At the same time, it also said 'something is better than nothing'. The KDA, along with the Leh Apex Body (LAB), has been spearheading an agitation in Ladakh, seeking statehood, safeguards enshrined under the sixth schedule of the Constitution and a separate public service commission (PSC) for the strategic Himalayan region. In 2023, the Union home ministry had formed a high-powered committee under minister of state Nityanand Rai to discuss ways to protect Ladakh's unique culture, considering its location and strategic importance. Reacting to the Centre's notifications, KDA's senior leader and political in-charge of Jamiat ul Ulama Isna Ashariya Kargil (JUIAK), Sajjad Hussain Kargili, said, 'Though it's good, women reservation was not a part of our four-point agenda. We have been agitating for legislature. Statehood is a big issue for us.' On domicile law, Kargili said, 'Something is better than nothing. In the past six years, not even a single gazetted post (job) has been given in Ladakh.' 'We also arrived at a consensus that domicile law of 15 years should be implemented prospectively. At the same time, we want it to be made 30 years. The government has assured us to consider it,' said Kargili. 'We hope that without further delay, the Ladkah administration will now advertise jobs,' he said. Congress' Tsering Namgyal, leader of the Opposition in Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council of Leh, welcomed 33% reservation for women in hill councils. He lambasted the Centre for fixing 15-year residency for domicile law and described it a ploy to change the demography of Ladakh. 'The LAB and the KDA wanted 1989 as the cut-off year to grant domicile certificates. This 15-year residency rule has been rejected by 80% to 90% people of Ladakh,' he said. Chering Dorjay Lakrook, ex-BJP minister and president of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, refused to make any comment. 'After we study them (notifications), we will address media on Wednesday. Till then, I have been asked not to talk to mediapersons,' he said. The Ladakh Civil Services Decentralisation and Recruitment (Amendment) regulation was notified days after the ministry and Ladakhi representatives met on May 27 and agreed to the rules, an official aware of the matter said. It defines a domicile for jobs for a person who has resided in the UT for 15 years, studied for seven years, and appeared for class 10 or 12 examinations in Ladakh. A similar policy was announced for Jammu and Kashmir in May 2020. The Union Territory of Ladakh Reservation (Amendment) Regulation, also notified on Tuesday, says the reservation shall in no case exceed 85% of the available vacancies, excluding reservation for economically weaker sections. The official cited above said 80% of vacancies are reserved for the region's majority, scheduled tribes (STs), 4% for those living along the Line of Actual Control or Line of Control, 1% for the scheduled castes and 10% for the economically weaker sections. The ministry had proposed 95% of the reservation for locals during discussions. The third notification provides for one-third seats for women in the hill councils by rotation to different territorial constituencies. The Ladakh Official Languages Regulation recognises English, Hindi, Urdu, Bhoti, and Purgi as the official languages and says that the administrator 'shall make special efforts for the promotion and development of other native languages of Ladakh: Shina (Dardic), Brokskat (Dardic), Balti and Ladakhi'.
