CM flays police handling of Peroorkada case; promises necessary action
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday condemned the police's handling of the case in which a Dalit woman was falsely accused of theft at Peroorkada in the district.
Alluding to the misconduct that has brought the Peroorkada police under the scanner, the Chief Minister flagged various lapses, including the wrongful detention of 39-year-old Nedumangad native R. Bindu at the police station and the misbehaviour being meted out to her.
'The police did not act in accordance with the law, and a probe is currently under way into the issue,' he told mediapersons in Kozhikode.
He asserted that there was no delay or oversight on the part of the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), which intervened promptly to initiate an inquiry based on the woman's grievance. 'However, we could not agree to her demand to intervene in a case that is under police investigation. We communicated to her that necessary steps will be taken,' he said.
Theft charge
Ms. Bindu, a domestic worker, was taken into custody by the Peroorkada police on April 23 on the charge of stealing a gold necklace from her employer, Omana Daniel. While the complainant later withdrew her complaint after finding the jewellery in her own home, various lapses were found on the part of the police officers in handling the case.
Peroorkada sub-inspector Prasad S.G. was suspended by District Police Chief (Thiruvananthapuram City) Thomson Jose on the basis of an inquiry report by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), District Special Branch, on Monday. The probe found that the action of the sub-inspector was 'unbecoming of an officer' and caused mental agony to the victim. He was also found guilty of gross indiscipline and abuse of power.
Lapses by two officers
A separate investigation by the ACP, Cantonment, reportedly uncovered lapses by two other officers who violated standard procedures. These included detaining the complainant without just cause and transporting her for evidence collection during late hours, contrary to prescribed norms. The District Police Chief is expected to take necessary action based on the findings.
Ms. Bindu also indicated her intention to file a defamation lawsuit against her former employer for the false theft allegations.
Women's panel
Meanwhile, the Kerala Women's Commission has also called for a comprehensive probe into the incident.

Bihar Dalit rape victim dies after being made to wait for hours in ambulance
PATNA: A nine-year-old Dalit girl from Bihar's Muzaffarpur, who was raped and brutally attacked on May 26, died at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Sunday morning, amid allegations that she was left waiting in an ambulance for several hours before getting a bed. She was brought to PMCH from Muzaffarpur-based SKMCH in a critical condition on Saturday. Former Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan said the party would ensure justice for the victim's family. She also lashed out at state health minister Mangal Pandey over the deteriorating condition of premier hospitals like PMCH. 'I demand Mangal Pandey's resignation. He has no moral right to remain in office when the poor are being denied healthcare despite the state government's tall claims of improving infrastructure in government-run hospitals,' she said. Rajesh Rathod, media in-charge of Congress, said that the rape victim had to wait in ambulance for several hours in the premises of the PMCH. "Her family members reached the PMCH at 11 am on Saturday. It took the hospital administration more than four hours to arrange a bed for her,' he added. Bihar Congress president Rajesh Ram slammed the state government for its insensitivity towards women, citing the rising incidents of sexual assault. 'The law-and-order machinery has completely collapsed in the state,' he said. Sushil Kumar, senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Muzaffarpur district, said that the accused, identified as Rohit Sahni has already been arrested. Muzaffarpur residents alleged that the accused Rohit Sahani had earlier committed the same offence with another 12-year-old girl at the village and attempted to kill her. However, she had survived in the incident. Meanwhile, the Muzaffarpur unit of the Congress staged a protest at Saraiyaganj Tower Chowk, condemning the incident and threatening to intensify their agitation. Party members alleged that three cases of rape have been reported in the district in recent days.

Congress condemns rape, murder of 9-year-old girl in Bihar
Alleging political patronage for criminals, the Congress on Sunday condemned the brutal rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl in Muzaffarpur in NDA-ruled Bihar. The party alleged in the Muzaffarpur incident, the rapist was a serial offender allowed to roam free by the administration. 'Rapists and criminals were feeling emboldened as the JD-U-BJP government had let powerful and influential people go scot-free despite serious charges,' said party spokesperson Shama Mohamed. Addressing a press conference at the AICC office here with MP Ranjeet Ranjan, Shama Mohamed revealed that after the brutal rape and heinous assault on the nine-year-old victim on May 26, she was left to die near a brick kiln. Ranjan disclosed that the victim was initially admitted to a local hospital in Muzaffarpur. After her condition deteriorated, she was referred to AIIMS, Patna, where the doctors refused to admit her, citing summer vacation and the unavailability of specialists required for multi-specialty treatment. The relatives of the girl then took her to Patna Medical College and Hospital where again she was refused admission for about five hours, she said. It was only after Bihar state Congress president Rajesh Kumar reached there that she was finally admitted. However, by that time, it was too late and she eventually lost the battle for her life, she said. Ranjan noted that had the victim been provided proper treatment at the right time, her life could have been saved. She held the JDU-BJP government in Bihar responsible for her rape and subsequent criminal medical negligence that led to her death. Shama Mohamed remarked that just because the victim belonged to the Dalit community and not an upper caste, she was refused treatment at an institution like AIIMS. She pointed out, even after she was taken to Patna Medical College and Hospital, the victim was again denied admission and was left waiting in an ambulance for about five hours until the state Congress president intervened. Mohamed disclosed that this was one in a series of atrocities and heinous crimes against women taking place in Bihar. She also referred to several similar incidents in the past.

Double-engine government in Bihar failed to save a 11-year-old Dalit rape victim, says Congress
Condemning the rape and murder of a 11-year-old Dalit girl in Bihar's Muzaffarpur, the Congress on Sunday (June 1, 2025) claimed that the 'double engine government' had failed to save her life. Taking to social media platform X, senior leader Rahul Gandhi said the brutality against a minor Dalit girl in Muzaffarpur and the subsequent negligence in her treatment were 'extremely shameful'. 'If she had received timely treatment, her life could have been saved. Let alone provide security, the double engine government was negligent about saving her life. We will not sit quiet until the victim's family gets justice. Strict action should be taken against the culprits and negligent officers,' he wrote. Addressing a press conference at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) office, senior party leader and Rajya Sabha member Ranjeet Ranjan and party spokesperson Shama Mohamed alleged that the administration allowed the rapist to 'roam free' despite being a serial offender. Ms. Ranjan noted that the 11-year-old victim was left to die near a brick kiln after her brutal rape. While she was first admitted to a local hospital in Muzaffarpur, she was taken to AIIMS Patna after her condition deteriorated but doctors there refused to admit her, allegedly due to the unavailability of specialists required for the multi-speciality treatment, she said. It took the intervention of Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Kumar for the victim to be admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and that too was after five hours, the Congress MP claimed. 'If the girl was given proper treatment at the right time, her life could have been saved,' Ms. Ranjan said, accusing the JD(U)-BJP government of 'criminal medical negligence'. Ms. Mohamed said the victim's body had 20 knife marks, her neck had been cut, her body mutilated, and she was left in the brick kiln to die. 'I am a doctor myself, and I know that when a case like that comes, they immediately take it. You don't say that you don't have a specialist available—never. But what did they do? They refused to take the child because she was a Dalit. If she were a VIP's daughter or a high-caste child, she would have been admitted. Shame on the doctors in AIIMS Patna,' she said. She claimed that criminals were feeling emboldened as the BJP government had 'let powerful and influential people go scot-free despite serious charges'. 'What happened to the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padao' slogan of the Prime Minister?' Ms. Mohamed asked.
