The biggest snubs and surprises of the 2025 Emmy nominations

Emmy nominations arrived Tuesday morning, and if you made the list, it's a 'White Lotus' Full Moon Party vibe, full of celebratory cheers, toasts with your beverage of choice (it's still early, maybe some of that Thai Red Bull?) and techno music playing loud enough to have Interpol banging on your door.
And if you didn't hear your name called, well, you're feeling like poor Pornchai watching Belinda sail away into the sunset. Or maybe you're like Saxon, compartmentalizing the whole thing, pretending it never happened. We feel you.
With Emmy submissions down this year, there aren't as many slots available to salute all the worthy work, leading to some sad omissions — which, for the sake of alliteration and search engine optimization, we'll call 'snubs.' There were also some surprises, some worthy, some about as welcome as one of those poison piña coladas Jason Isaacs blended up in the 'White Lotus' finale.
Grab something to eat (maybe an item from the Old School Hollywood buffet table) while we run down the morning's notables.
SNUB: 'The Four Seasons' (comedy series)
You kind of hated these wealthy, entitled boneheads, and not in ways that were intended or even fun.
SNUB: Colman Domingo, 'The Four Seasons' (comedy actor)
You know it's bad when even Domingo can't snag a nom.
SNUB: Natasha Lyonne, 'Poker Face' (comedy actress)To quote Lyonne's human lie-detector Charlie Cale, that's 'bulls—.'
SNUB: 'The Rehearsal' (comedy series)
How could a show about airline safety produce more laugh-out-loud moments than any other comedy series this year? How could a show so funny, insightful and, yes, occasionally terrifying not be nominated for comedy series? (Also, and not completely unrelated: How could it take this long for the TSA to let us keep our shoes on?)
SNUB: Selena Gomez, 'Only Murders in the Building' (comedy actress)
Gomez earned her first Emmy acting nomination last year, but with the category trimmed to five nominees from six, something had to give. Detractors fault her flat, monotone delivery, though if you're acting opposite Martin Short and Steve Martin, you need to find your own lane. Arguably, Gomez has. Look for that debate to continue next year when the show returns for a fifth season.
SNUB: Kate Hudson, 'Running Point' (comedy actress)
The Lakers can't win anywhere, can they?
SNUB: Bridget Everett, 'Somebody Somewhere' (comedy actress)
Somebody, somewhere voted for Everett, so tender and vulnerable and utterly charming on this now-ended HBO series, one that seems destined for a long life of cult appreciation along the lines of 'Enlightened,' created by (yes) Mike White.
SURPRISE: Kristen Bell, 'Nobody Wants This' (comedy actress)
Not a surprise that's she's nominated — everyone watched this show in one sitting. But a surprise that this is her first nomination ever. Well-earned, even if I'm not convinced Adam Brody's rabbi would throw everything away for her character.
SNUB: Steve Martin, 'Only Murders in the Building' (comedy actor)
How do you nominate Martin Short and not Steve Martin? Big always wins over subtle. You have to wonder if voters forgot, or didn't watch, the show's last season — it has been awhile — which had Martin carrying the plot's emotional weight as his character grieved the loss of longtime stunt double and friend, Sazz (played by Jane Lynch).
SURPRISE: 'Paradise' (drama series)
The dystopian drama that asked the question, 'Would you want to be trapped in an underground bunker with the likes of these people?' I can't think of anything more frightening and enough Emmy voters agreed.
SNUB: 'Your Friends and Neighbors' (limited series)
As the Jon Hamm series went along, it felt more like a Patek Philippe ad than any kind of comment on the empty lives of the wealthy. (Are there not any rich people out there leading fulfilling lives?) By the end of its run, we were checking our watches, and voters didn't give it the time of day. (Sorry.)
SNUB: 'Disclaimer' (limited series)
What a disappointment. Alfonso Cuarón's highly anticipated seven-chapter psychological thriller premiered at the Venice Film Festival last August, screening four episodes over two nights. It then went to Telluride, Toronto and London. It was an event ... until people saw it and were left baffled. How could the filmmaker behind 'Children of Men,' 'Gravity' and 'Y tu mamá también' make something so dull that few people could to finish it?
SNUB: Renée Zellweger, 'Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy' (limited series/movie actress)
When 'Love Island' defines romantic-comedy for a lot of people, she didn't stand a chance.

Gen Xers mourn drowning death of actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, known as Theo on ‘The Cosby Show'

Warner was swimming Sunday afternoon at Playa Cocles in Costa Rica's Limon province when a current pulled him deeper into the Caribbean, according to that country's Judicial Investigation Department. Advertisement First responders found him without vital signs. Cori Murray, executive vice president of content at Ebony Magazine, was saddened upon hearing about Warner's death. She said his Theo character mirrored the everyday Black teenager, which was rare to see on TV at the time. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up While so many portrayals of young Black teenagers leaned negative, 'The Cosby Show,' especially Theo, showed warmth, joy and relatability. 'He wasn't just a character. We saw ourselves in him,' Murray said. 'You know how Kendrick Lamar has the song 'Not Like Us'? Well, Theo was one of us. He was like us.' Murray, who met Warner a few times, recalled his character off-screen matched the warmth he exuded on television. She called him respectful and pleasant and said he had a 'megawatt smile' that lit up the room. Advertisement 'His energy stayed with you,' Murray said. 'You don't have a bad memory when it comes to Theo or Malcolm-Jamal Warner. As much as we loved the character, we also watched Malcolm grow up in real life. No scandals. No mess. Just a talented young man who matured into an upstanding, handsome adult.' 'The Cosby Show' was groundbreaking and a ratings giant, drawing in viewers across racial, cultural and economic backgrounds. The show ran for 197 episodes from 1984 to 1992. In 1986, Warner earned an Emmy nomination for supporting actor in a comedy. The show starring Bill Cosby as Cliff Huxtable and Phylicia Rashad as his wife, Clair, 'made the wider society aware that there are Black people who live like white people do,' said Cammock, who is Black. 'The perception that we don't live like they do was hurtful.' Gil Robertson, co-founder and president of the African American Film Critics Association, reflected on Warner's rare path in the entertainment industry. 'There was never any scandal, no controversy,' said Robertson. 'He transitioned from a teen star to a respected adult without the baggage we often see from others in his generation. That's no small feat.' Robertson added: 'The legacy of Theo Huxtable — and Malcolm's performance — will live on. It left an imprint that will continue to resonate in our culture for generations.' Lynn Reasonover, 62, of Oak Lawn, Illinois, began receiving messages Monday afternoon about Warner's death. Her initial thoughts were 'Nope, didn't happen.' 'Then, I kept seeing the news flashes and friends started sending texts,' Reasonover said. 'So, it's sinking in. Makes you realize how much some celebrities help shape our memories. His work had such a huge impact. I'm feeling a personal loss because we grew up with him. It's like losing a part of our childhood.' Advertisement Reasonover saw much of her family in the Huxtables, where both parents were professionals who valued education and handled family issues with understanding and love. 'They had similar problems to what we experienced growing up,' she said. 'We could relate and that's why we laughed.' Rasheda Williams, 46, of Detroit was about the same age as Rudy, the youngest character on 'The Cosby Show' and Theo's little sister. Williams said she and others are mourning Warner's passing because of what they saw in the character he played. 'He's like the ideal cousin you wish you had,' Williams said. 'Hearing the news has really affected some of us. It was unexpected. He wasn't sick. That makes it even more tragic.' 'He wasn't just an actor,' she said. 'He was also an activist, a positive role model, not just for young Black men, but for young Black women as well.' AP Entertainment Writer Jonathan Landrum Jr. in Los Angeles contributed to this report.

An Update On ‘Paradise' Season 2 On Hulu Well Ahead Of Its Release Date

Paradise Hulu has managed to slip in some Emmy nominations this year for a brand new series, Paradise, the post-apocalyptic Sterling K. Brown drama where he plays a Secret Service agent now living in an idyllic town…miles under the earth after the world is blown up. Paradise was renewed way back in February of this year, and now we have a new update on season 2 for the first time in a while. The news comes from an interview with EW, in which bizarre things are discussed like the goofy idea for a Last of Us crossover, but some actual news about what's coming. Here's Brown on season 2 (spoilers ahead): Paradise And how he's going to have to travel: The goal is to get from Colorado to Atlanta, where he believes his not-dead wife is. He also says yes, of course, that there will be plenty going on in Paradise itself, even if he is on a new mission. There will also be more of James Marsden in presidential flashbacks, but not as many as before, no doubt. Marsden is actually joining Your Friends and Neighbors on Apple for season 2 of that show, and he has also been filming Avengers: Doomsday, reprising his 20-year-old role as Cyclops. There's also a tease about Shailene Woodley joining the cast in season 2. It's likely she's someone that Xavier finds on the surface, and he praises her as a person and a new friend after filming. 'She's outstanding,' he says. What we do not have is an actual release date for Paradise season 2. The 'anticipated' window is early in 2026, as the creator says he doesn't want a huge gap between seasons. That could be a year or a year and a half, depending. But this is streaming, so likely more toward the latter. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

Is Phil Dunster not in Ted Lasso Season 4? 8 other favorites who could be out

Excitement is high for fans of everyone's favorite football-coach-turned-soccer-coach, Ted Lasso as Apple TV+ released the first behind-the-scenes clip of Season 4 on Monday, giving a glimpse at the cast in a Kansas City restaurant. Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent), Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Welton), Juno Temple (Keeley Jones), Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard) and Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins) are all confirmed to return for the new season of the Emmy-award winning comedy. But will we see all of our favorites? So far, there has not been any official confirmation on any of the following: Before you panic, just know this doesn't meant that they're definitely not returning in their roles. There is potential that the new season centers around the new AFC Richmond women's team that Keeley pitched to Rebecca at the end of Season 3. If that's the case -- and Ted is being approached to help with or coach the women's squad -- it makes sense we'd see less of the men's players. There's still a chance that some, or all, of the previous supporting cast returns. We'll just have to wait and see. Is Phil Dunster coming back as Jamie Tartt? Regarding that, from Deadline: Not picked up at the time was Phil Dunster (Jamie), in part due to a conflict with another series. He has since signed on for a series regular role on a new HBO comedy from Ted Lasso executive producer Bill Lawrence and Warner Bros TV but could potentially reprise his role in some limited capacity, with fellow Brit Nick Mohammed (Nate) teasing a possible Ted Lasso return in January.
