Tom Moody says Chennai Super Kings should release R Ashwin; 'That's a lot of money for someone who's not…'

Mint20-05-2025

Former Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody has stated that Chennai Super Kings need to make tough calls before the next season of the Indian Premier League.
All 10 IPL franchises will take part in a mini auction before IPL 2026 and Moody feels CSK should let go of off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to release some funds.
The veteran spinner as brought back into the franchise after a decade for ₹ 9.75 crore and his returns in IPL 2025 have been less than satisfactory. The fact that CSK are currently bottom of the table, and have fell short in all departments, has not helped anyone's cause, let alone Ashwin's.
Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Moody said: "I understand the philosophy behind CSK going for Ashwin because, at the end of the day, they have always gone for proven and mature players and that philosophy has worked for them over the duration of the IPL. But if you need to release funds, the obvious one would be Ashwin.
'He went for close to 10 crores in the auction, and that's a lot of money for someone who's not guaranteed a place in the XI. So that maybe a hard conversation that the management will have to have with him.'
If CSK still have faith in the off spinner, Moody suggested they could buy him back in the mini auction at a lower price.
The Chennai-born veteran spinner's return to his home city franchise was celebrated leading up to IPL 2025 but the return of the 'prodigal son' has not gone to plan.
The 38-year-old has been ineffective this year, despite playing on spin-friendly surfaces, as he has picked up 5 wickets from 8 matches at an average of 48.40 and an economy rate of 8.96.
Ashwin, who is a designated all-rounder, has been poor with the bat too as he has scored only 20 runs at an average of 6.67 and a strike rate under a run a ball (90.91).
His poor performances have coincided with CSK's worst performance in an IPL season in a long time, with many calling for wholesale changes in preparatinon for IPL 2026.
Will Ashwin be one of the many players who could leave the five time IPL champions after this season?

Jasprit Bumrah and the power of belief

Jasprit Bumrah has been told 'no' throughout his career. Want to make it big with a quirky action? Not likely. Want to play all three formats? You're just a white-ball bowler. Want to be a bowling superstar in a country obsessed with batters? Fat chance. Want to come back from injury, again and again and again, and still be as good a bowler as you were? Not going to happen. Every step of the way, Bumrah has proved naysayers comprehensively wrong. In the last Test India played, Bumrah's back finally gave way. He had been carrying the load of his country's hopes for so long that something had to give. When he walked off the field in Sydney, no one knew how long he would be away, and how his bowling would hold up when he returned. But when India next played a Test, Bumrah turned up with 5 for 83. Those figures are deceptive because they could have been so much more. Bumrah was bowling with all the venom, guile and skill of old, but his team could not seem to hold their catches off him. Eventually, he just did it himself, castling England's last batters. It is thanks to Bumrah that India still have parity against England after three days' play in the first Test at Headingley. Without Bumrah, India were looking at conceding a potentially big lead. Which is a disquieting sentence for India because one of the fallouts of Bumrah's breakdown in Sydney is that he has to be a lot more careful about managing his body, and he will not be available for all five Tests in England. India have to learn to survive without Bumrah. Bumrah, the bowler, is irreplaceable. But when he's absent, maybe the rest of the team can channel some of Bumrah's belief. 'I played for India on my belief. I have played every format on my belief,' Bumrah said after play on Sunday (June 22). 'Because people have only told me 'no'. First, they said you won't be able to play, then they said you will last only six months, then only eight months. And just like that, I have spent 10 years in international cricket and 12-13 years playing IPL. People still say the same thing, 'He will go now'. Well, they can keep waiting. I'm not going to think about that at all. I'll just do my work. Every three-four months, news will come that I'm done now. (Shrugs) Let's see. Till it is written in my destiny, I will play. I do my best preparation and leave the rest up to god.' But even if you cannot replicate Bumrah's skills, the Indian team faltered in their ability to at least support their most valuable player to the best extent possible. There is a heavier price to be paid for dropped catches by India than just the runs scored by the reprieved batter. The pitch at Headingley has not been of any great help to bowlers. Bumrah created several chances despite that. Every dropped catch meant that much longer of a bowling stint. On a helpful pitch, the next wicket might not be too far away. On a batting pitch, the effect of each dropped chance is exponential. Bumrah had four catches dropped off his bowling. India could have had a lead of 150 runs instead of the six they got, and Bumrah's workload could have been much shorter. This is what happened at the MCG in 2024-25. A lot of drops, a sharp increase in the overs, Bumrah was asked to bowl, and a breakdown in the next Test at SCG. Bumrah himself was philosophical about the drops. 'You can't really sit down and cry, isn't it? You have to move forward in the game… Nobody is dropping catches purposely. I don't want to create a scene or put more pressure on the fielder - that I'm angry, I'm kicking the box… It's okay, it's part and parcel of the game.' But while Bumrah can move on, Team India must make it a priority to address the rash of drops. It will cost them in the game, but it could have longer-term effects on their most prized asset. If India does go on to win the first Test, they will again have to depend on Bumrah's genius. He himself doesn't think in those terms, though. 'If I start to play on everybody else's expectations, that 'This is my name and this is my ranking and this is how I'm supposed to bowl' - then I'm carrying a lot of baggage, and that's very difficult to carry,' Bumrah smiled. 'I ask myself this question at night. Did I give it my absolute best? If the answer is yes, I quietly go back to sleep.' Based on that, Bumrah will at least get a good night's rest every single day.

Jasprit Bumrah's 12th five-wicket haul equals Kapil Dev record; first Indian to take 10 five-wicket hauls in SENA nations

His critics expected him to go from 'boom' to bust within eight to ten months due to his unconventional, injury-prone bowling action, but it is Jasprit Bumrah's self-belief that has enabled the Indian pace spearhead to complete nearly a decade in international cricket. Having taken his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests on Sunday, Bumrah spoke about his secret recipe for success. Asked if he feels bad when people write his epitaph after every big injury, Bumrah replied: "People had said in all these years (I will play only) eight months, some said 10 months but now I have played 10 years of international cricket, 12-13 years of IPL. "Even now people say (after every injury), he will be finished, he is gone. Let them say, I will do my own work. Every four months these things will crop up, but as long as almighty wants, I will play. "I prepare my best, and then will leave it on God as to how much more blessings he will bestow upon me." Bumrah, who took 5 for 83 in England's first innings in the opening Test, said that he is not here to change people's perceptions. "What people write is beyond my control and I can't advise people on what to write about me. My name in headline gets viewership but I don't get bothered by that." He said that wicket is good for batting although it might crack up a bit towards the end of the match. "At this moment pretty good wicket to bat on. It is a little bit two paced, no big demons in wicket. Due to weather, new ball will swing but that is what you expect in Test cricket. We would like to get a big total and get that cushion." India were guilty of spilling several catches, but Bumrah chose not to dwell on the lapses, preferring instead to focus on what lies ahead. "Yeah, just for a second. But you understand that you can't really sit down and cry, isn't it? You have to move forward with the game. So, what I look to do is not to take it too far in my head and try and quickly forget it because all of them are also new to the game. "Sometimes the ball is difficult to sight and nobody is dropping the catch purposely. Everybody is trying really hard. It does happen. So, I don't want to create a scene or put more pressure on the fielder that I'm angry, I'm kicking the box or I'm doing something. It's okay. "It's part and parcel of the game. Obviously, if it (catches) would have been taken earlier, that's good, but people will learn from this experience," he added. Bumrah's impressive 5/83 in 24.4 overs came despite three dropped catches, including that of Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and Harry Brook, all put down by Yashasvi Jaiswal. He had also dismissed Brook for a duck, but that delivery was later deemed a no-ball. While speaking in the post-match press conference, Jasprit Bumrah said, 'Just for a second (disappointment on dropped catches), you just cannot sit and cry about it. You have to move forward with the game. I try not to take it too far in my head and forget it. A lot of them are new to the game, and for the first time, it is hard to see the ball here. Nobody is dropping catches intentionally, and it is a part and parcel of the game. They will learn from it. I do not want to create a scene and put more pressure on them, like I am kicking the ball or something.' In an almost lone-warrior effort, Bumrah took 5/83 in 24.4 overs at an economy rate of 3.36. This is Bumrah's 10th five-wicket haul in SENA nations, becoming the first-ever Indian to touch this figure. Two more five-wicket hauls will take him above Pakistan legend Wasim Akram (11 SENA fifers). This is also Bumrah's 12th five-wicket haul in away Tests, equalling that of former Indian skipper Kapil Dev.
