Scout Exec Sees Opportunity In Rivian Layoffs

Miami Herald30-06-2025
Rivian last week laid off 140 employees, representing about 1% of its workforce, prompting Jacopo Marzetti, head of logistics at Scout Motors, to encourage them to apply at the Volkswagen Group brand, which aims to launch its first electric vehicles in 2027.
"Sympathy and support to the employees impacted by the latest Rivian layoffs," Marzetti wrote Monday in a LinkedIn post. "Have a look to the Scout Motors career website and apply directly to join our team."
The post included a link to the Scout career site, which listed 127 job openings at the time of publication covering areas ranging from sales and management of parts supplies, to software development and vehicle engineering. TechCrunch reported last week that most of the Rivian layoffs affected the automaker's manufacturing team, and that employees were being encouraged to apply to other open positions within the company.
Both Rivian and Scout are in the midst of production ramp-ups. Rivian is looking to start manufacturing its R2 electric SUV in 2026. First shown in 2024, the R2 is a smaller model with a targeted base price of $45,000 that could open up a wider audience for Rivian, making it key to the automaker's continued development.
Scout, meanwhile, is trying to get its first products to customers. A revival of the classic International Harvester Scout name and ethos under the Volkswagen Group aegis, Scout plans to offer an SUV called the Traveler and a pickup truck called the Terra with a choice of all-electric or plug-in hybrid powertrains. The latter, dubbed Harvester, will use a naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine to extend total range from the estimated 350 miles of all-electric Scout models to about 500 miles.
Concept versions of both the Traveler and Terra were shown in late 2023, with designs expected to mostly carry over to production, which would create the closest rivals to the Rivian R1S and R1T we've seen so far. In addition to completing development work on the vehicles themselves, Scout must complete construction of a $2 billion South Carolina factory, which targets up to 200,000 vehicles a year, the brand has said.
True to its name, Scout will take a different approach to Rivian-and other VW Group brands-with a body-on-frame platform for maximum authenticity. But Scout will have access to Rivian's zonal electrical architecture and software under a $5.8 billion joint venture between Rivian and the VW Group announced in late 2024. It's still unclear which production vehicles will benefit from this partnership, but Rivian's tech will be in the toolbox Scout can rummage through as it looks to complete development of its rugged new vehicles.

AM Best Revises Issuer Credit Rating Outlook to Negative for Terra Insurance Company (A Risk Retention Group)

BUSINESS WIRE)-- AM Best has revised the outlook to negative from stable for the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating (Long-Term ICR) and affirmed the Financial Strength Rating (FSR) of A (Excellent) and the Long-Term ICR of 'a+' (Excellent) of Terra Insurance Company (A Risk Retention Group) (Terra) (Williston, VT). The outlook of the FSR is stable. The Credit Ratings (ratings) reflect Terra's balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as very strong, as well as its very strong operating performance, limited business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management (ERM). The negative outlook on Terra's Long-Term ICR reflects pressure on the insurer's operating performance assessment. Operating performance metrics have begun to diverge gradually from other 'very strong' assessed rating units. This followed a decline in Terra's results over the past two years due to an increase in expenses driven by inflation, the rising costs of facultative reinsurance and limited premium growth. While underwriting income has slipped in recent years, the company continues to report strong pre-tax operating gains and overall net income. Also, Terra's declining operating margins are mainly from the sharp increases in facultative reinsurance costs that have increased more than corresponding increases in gross premium. While reinsurance costs have risen, Terra's overall exposure remains unchanged as it has no exposure over $2 million. Terra's balance sheet strength assessment is supported by its risk-adjusted capitalization, which has remained at the strongest level, as measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), at year-end 2024. Other balance sheet strength considerations include favorable underwriting and reserve leverage measures, exceptionally strong liquidity, positive cash flows, low common stock leverage and expertise as a niche professional liability writer. Terra's limited business profile reflects its narrow spread of underwriting risk and limited opportunities to expand premium writings. An ERM assessment of appropriate reflects the company's risk management program, which is centered around a peer review process and focused on limiting loss costs. This is in addition to a strong reinsurance program, which is in place to cover the high severity of any claims from the design and engineering industry. Rivian (RIVN) Stock Backed by $18 Target After Investor Call

Rivian Automotive, Inc. (NASDAQ:RIVN) is one of the. On August 14, Benchmark analyst Mickey Legg reiterated a Buy rating on the stock with a $18.00 price target. The affirmation follows an investor call with the company's VP of Finance, Derek Mulvey. The firm came away optimistic about Rivian's growth trajectory, operational execution, and ability to scale production as it prepares for the R2 launch. 'We hosted an investor call with Rivian's VP of Finance, Derek Mulvey, yesterday and came away confident in the company's growth trajectory, operational execution, and ability to scale production into the R2 launch. Commentary reinforced our view that Rivian is positioned to leverage its technology, brand, and partnerships to capture meaningful share in the premium EV market while expanding into more affordable segments.' The firm believes Rivian has the potential to scale profitably and that it deserves a premium valuation multiple compared to its peers in the electric vehicle market. 'We believe our thesis behind RIVN's multi-year product roadmap, software-driven differentiation, and strategic partnerships remains intact and further underpins our conviction in its ability to scale profitably and command a premium valuation multiple relative to peers. In our view near-term volatility from policy shifts is outweighed by the medium-term production and margin expansion opportunity. Maintain Buy & $18.00 price target.' Rivian Automotive, Inc. Daniel Tosh — Yes, That Daniel Tosh — Got Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe to Spill the Tea on Future Products

We live in an era where podcasts by comedians—current and former—have become a strange fixture in the world of news. These shows generally aren't the place where automotive executives are breaking stories about their products, however. Times are changing, as Rivian CEO and founder RJ Scaringe shared some new details about the brand's upcoming product line with none other than... Daniel Tosh. Ever since last year's introduction of the second-generation Rivian R1 vehicles, the brand has been open about its plans to expand the lineup. We know that the mid-size R2 SUV is slated to arrive next year as a more affordable entry into the EV sphere; and once the automaker's new production facility in Georgia is online, the rally-inspired R3 hatch should arrive in time for 2028. Scaringe has previously suggested that the brand has more models in the works, including during the automaker's investors day event last year. Now, thanks to a recent appearance on the Tosh Show, we have a slightly more concrete understanding of that plan. 'We think we'll probably end up with like, maybe, five or six different vehicles,' Scaringe told Tosh. 'So after R1, there's R2 and R3. And after R2 and R3, there's R4 and R5. And that's as far out as our product plan goes today, and what we're working on, but there may be, like, an R6. I can't obviously talk about it here or show it to you... but the R4 and R5 are so cool, that's the next, next thing after R2 and R3.' While we don't have specific details about what any potential R4 and R5 models would look like, the automaker has given some hints in the past. During that aforementioned investors day, the automaker specifically noted the desire to add more affordable units beyond the R2 and R3. Scaringe has voiced his frustration at the current lack of compelling EVs below the $50,000 price point, outside of Tesla. Suffice it to say, it would be very interesting to see Rivian's level of software prowess and engineering know-how to trickle down into more 'normal' vehicles.
