UK police make over 500 arrests in largest Palestine Action protest
While 522 of those arrested during a demonstration in London were detained under the UK's Terrorism Act for showing support for a proscribed group, others were held for other offences, including assaulting police officers.
Meanwhile, hundreds of pro-Israel counter-protesters also marched through central London on Sunday, demanding the release of hostages still held in Gaza and in a show of solidarity with Israel in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Many of those arrested at the pro-Palestine demonstrations were displaying placards expressing support for Palestine Action.
The average age of those arrested was 54, and the most arrests — 147 of them — were of people aged between 60 and 69. The Met Police, the country's largest police force, said it marked the most arrests made in a single operation in a decade.
'Our role in the context of protest remains as it always has been – to police without fear or favour, to enforce the law, to keep the peace by ensuring groups with opposing views do not come together and to prevent serious disorder and serious disruption to ordinary people going about their lives," said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, who led the policing operation.
'Palestine Action was proscribed based on strong security advice following serious attacks the group has committed, involving violence, significant injuries, and extensive criminal damage," said Cooper.
Amnesty International UK's chief executive Sacha Deshmukh said the protesters in Parliament Square were not inciting violence, and it is entirely disproportionate to the point of absurdity to be treating them as terrorists.
'Instead of criminalising peaceful demonstrators, the government should be focusing on taking immediate and unequivocal action to put a stop to Israel's genocide and ending any risk of UK complicity in it," he said.
Those arrested were taken to processing points at Westminster in central London, and those whose details could be confirmed were released on bail on the condition that they must not attend further Palestine Action support events.
Others whose details could not be verified, many refusing to give them to the police, were taken to custody suites across London.
Legislation to ban Palestine Action came into force on 5 July, carrying a prison sentence of up to 14 years for showing support for the group.
'Palestine Action and people holding cardboard signs present no danger to the public at large," said a spokesperson for Defend Our Juries, one of the organisers of the protests. PTI AK SCY SCY

‘BrahMos hai humare paas': Asaduddin Owaisi hits out at Pakistan PM's water threat
In response to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's fresh threat to India over the Indus Waters Treaty, AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi warned the neighbouring country's leader that New Delhi has BrahMos, the missile. (PTI) Shehbaz Sharif had on Tuesday said the 'enemy' would not be allowed to snatch "even one drop" of water belonging to his country. While speaking to news agency ANI, Owaisi reacted to the Pakistani PM's statement and said, 'BrahMos hai humaare paas (We have the BrahMos)... He should not talk such nonsense. Such threats will have no effect on India. Enough is enough.' India put the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance on April 23 as part of the punitive measures it took against Pakistan following the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam the previous day. The terrorist attack had claimed 26 lives. Pakistan has consistently stated that any attempt to block the water flow to the country would be considered an act of war. At a ceremony in Islamabad, Sharif said, "I want to tell the enemy today that if you threaten to hold our water, then keep this in mind that you cannot snatch even one drop of Pakistan." He further said that if India attempted any such thing, "you will be again taught such a lesson that you will be left holding your ears.' Earlier, Owaisi had also sharply reacted to Pakistani army chief Asim Munir's 'nuclear' threats, saying that the language used against India is condemnable. The AIMIM president said in a post on X, "Pakistan Army Chief's threats & language against India are condemnable. That he did this from the US soil makes it worse. It deserves a Political response from the Modi government & not just the MEA statement, Government must lodge their protest and raise the issue with US strongly." Earlier on Tuesday, actor-politician Mithun Chakraborty issued a stern warning over Pakistan foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's remarks on India and the Indus treaty. Bhutto said that the diversion of the Indus river was an attack on the Pakistani "history, culture, and civilisation", particularly Sindh. He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned projects on the Indus river system amounted to a direct threat to Pakistan's water security. BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty reacted to Bhutto's remark and said, "'Agar aisi baatein karte rahenge aur humari khopdi sanak gayi toh phir ek ke baad ek BrahMos chalega (If such statements continue and we lose our patience, then BrahMos missiles will be launched one after another).'

Authorities Capture Cheetah, Take It Back to Kuno After It Kills Goat In Village Near Ranthambore

New Delhi: On August 12, authorities darted and captured female adult cheetah Jwala after it killed a goat in a village near Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan, and attempted to eat it. Authorities took the animal back to Kuno National Park, where it was free-ranging in the wild before it crossed human-dominated landscapes and entered the state of Rajasthan recently. Cheetah kills goat Videos of an adult cheetah attempting to eat the carcass of a goat inside a corral in a village in Rajasthan surfaced on August 12 on social media. In one video, the cheetah can be seen starting to eat a dead goat inside a fenced enclosure, as several other goats look on and mill around in the same area. Tens of people can also be seen looking on in the video from outside the wire fence of the enclosure. The video shows two uniformed officers approaching the cheetah as it ate the goat, and dragging the carcass of the goat away from the animal. Another video shows the same incident from a different angle. In this video, the two uniformed officers can be seen attempting to drag the dead goat away, and the cheetah refusing to let go. The loud voices of villagers can be heard in the background, as the cheetah finally lets go of its grip on the dead goat and follows the uniformed officers to the spot where they dragged the dead goat to. From the videos, it is clear that people are within a few meters of the animal, as they talk and clamour loudly. In a press statement on August 13, Uttam Kumar Sharma, Madhya Pradesh Assistant Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Field Director of Kuno National Park said that the female cheetah, Jwala, was 'rescued' from Kareera Kalan village in Sawaimadhopur district in Rajasthan, 'under challenging conditions'. Sawaimadhopur is the same district that is home to the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve. 'With an enormous crowd of onlookers, the cornered animal was rescued after darting,' the press note issued on August 13 said. 'The animal had to be handled physically by the Cheetah Monitoring Team, by pulling the goat kill made by cheetah Jwala, in an effort to confine her within the enclosure to prevent any conflict.' According to the note, the cheetah was brought back to Kuno; here, it has been released back in the wild within the national park again, the Field Director confirmed to The Wire on August 13. According to authorities, the animal had crossed the inter-state boundary moving across a human-dominated landscape during the daytime on August 11. 'Considering the safety of the animal and of the people, a decision was taken to rescue Jwala,' the note read. 'Rescuing' who? Incidentally, ecologists told The Wire - just as the first batch of cheetahs were brought in, in September 2022 – that the release of the animals in the wild could aggravate human-wildlife 'conflict', or negative human-cheetah interactions, in the area. This, they said, was because some of the cheetahs brought in from Africa (Namibia and South Africa) could be animals that were familiar with human presence and predating on livestock – which are far easier prey than wild herbivores. Scientists have also suggested that some cheetahs brought to India may even be rescued from similar 'conflict' situations from villages in the countries they arrived from. On March 24 this year, villagers pelted African cheetah Jwala and her four cubs with stones after the big cats tried to hunt a calf on farmland outside Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, as The Wire reported. Jwala, the female cheetah that authorities captured from Rajasthan and brought back to Kuno on August 12, is one of the 11 remaining adult cheetahs among the 20 that arrived from Namibia and South Africa in September 2022 and February 2023 for Project Cheetah, India's ambitious but highly-criticised cheetah introduction programme initiated in Kuno in Madhya Pradesh. Nine adults have died due to various reasons including maggot infections and fights with other cheetahs. 1 held for running online investment scam via social media: Police
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) The Delhi Police has apprehended a graduate from Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly running a Rs 6.03-crore online investment scam that duped victims via social media, officials said on Wednesday. Accused Krishna Kumar (29) was tracked down and apprehended from Kulesara in Greater Noida, police said, adding that he allegedly lured people with promises of extraordinary returns in stock trading. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Aditya Gautam said the accused induced the victims to join a social media channel named 'Plus500 Global CS", where fake profit screenshots, fabricated trading dashboards and scripted chats were used to create the illusion of legitimate profits. In one such case, the victim was persuaded to invest Rs 6.03 crore in multiple instalments into accounts linked to the syndicate. When the victim attempted to withdraw the funds, he was blocked from the group, the officer said. During the probe, police discovered that the fraudsters used fake numbers and virtual phone lines to hide their identities. The funds were routed through multiple bank accounts in a layered manner to avoid detection. A breakthrough came when police traced Rs 57 lakh to an account of 'Priyanka Placement and Loan Services", which was found to be a front entity controlled by Kumar, the DCP said. The accused also operated two cyber cafes that facilitated fraudulent activities and masked financial transactions, he added. Kumar has been taken into police custody for sustained interrogation to identify other members of the syndicate, police said, adding that advanced digital forensics, device cloning and financial-trail mapping are underway to dismantle the wider network and recover assets.
