In a landmark move set to shape the future of chess in India, NODWIN Gaming, a leader in South Asia's esports and gaming sector, has announced a strategic partnership with the world's largest chess platform, Chess.com, and India's top chess media and grassroots organisation, ChessBase India. This collaboration brings together three major players from esports, content creation, and competitive chess to form a cohesive ecosystem that nurtures talent, broadens reach, and enhances India's presence on the global chess esports stage.
This alliance combines the unique strengths of these leaders in the chess and gaming industry. NODWIN Gaming contributes its expertise in production, broadcasting, and commercial strategy. ChessBase India offers unparalleled access to India's vibrant chess community and grassroots networks. Chess.com brings its extensive global platform, community, creator partnerships, and world-class tournament infrastructure. Together, they create a synergy aimed at developing and scaling original intellectual properties, delivering premium competitive formats, fostering deeper engagement across player and creator communities, and offering significant opportunities for brands to partner in the rapidly growing chess ecosystem.
Akshat Rathee, Co-founder and Managing Director of NODWIN Gaming, stated, 'Chess is experiencing a cultural renaissance, from park benches and schoolrooms to sold-out esports arenas and creator streams. Chess has now become the fourth most-watched sport in the country, following cricket, kabaddi, and BGMI tournaments. This partnership is not just about supporting a heritage game; it's about facilitating its natural progression. By combining our unique strengths, we are creating a future-ready ecosystem that can elevate Indian chess from heritage to hype. It's time for our grandmasters to meet the energy of our digital generation."
This visibility spike was evident during the World Chess Championship, exclusively streamed in India through the efforts of NODWIN Gaming, Chess.com, and ChessBase India. The final match between Gukesh Dommaraju and Ding Liren, which crowned Gukesh as the World Chess Champion, garnered over 24 million views, with peak concurrent viewership reaching 200,000.
India plays a central role in this surge, with cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai ranking among the top chess-viewing regions globally. Indian users primarily access content via mobile, with 80.9% of viewership on smartphones, and the largest age group being 18 to 34 years old, highlighting the game's strong connection with India's digital-native Gen Z and millennial audiences.
Sagar Shah, CEO of ChessBase India, commented, 'This partnership isn't just a business alliance — it's a vision to grow the chess community in India from the grassroots to the grand stage. For the past decade, we've focused on building a robust chess culture in the country. Now, with NODWIN and Chess.com by our side, we aim to create more opportunities for everyone involved in the chess ecosystem."
Avadh Shah, Country Director of Chess.com India, added, 'Chess has been one of the most dominant and fastest-growing sports in the last three years across India and the world. In terms of both participation and viewership, chess is achieving record-breaking numbers. Given the excitement around the sport, it's fitting that leading companies within the ecosystem collaborate to further its development and invite partners to join this journey."
The partnership also aligns with the rise of chess as a recognised esports discipline. At the upcoming Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025, chess will debut with a prize pool of $1.5 million. Leading Indian esports organisation S8UL will represent India in competitive chess at the Esports World Cup with its team of Grandmasters Nihal Sarin and Aravindh Chithambaram, marking the first-ever representation of an Indian esports team in competitive chess on a global stage. Their involvement highlights the growing recognition of chess as a spectator-friendly, high-skill esport.
As India prepares to make its mark on this new frontier, the alliance between NODWIN Gaming, Chess.com, and ChessBase India promises to build the foundational infrastructure needed for long-term growth, from top-tier broadcasts and influencer-led content to community tournaments and professional leagues.
Together, NODWIN Gaming, ChessBase India, and Chess.com aim to establish a robust ecosystem for Indian chess that honours the nation's legacy, empowers creators, and positions India as a global hub for online competitive chess.

‘To create Olympic warriors' – India's new Archery Premier League aims for bull's eye
The myth that India just cannot win an Olympic archery medal, has taken root with each heartbreak and fourth place disappointment at subsequent Games. But the mythology – and separately the history – of India being an ancient land of great archers, however, will provide the inspiration for the Archery Premier League, with the first edition set to kick off on Dasra, the last day of Navratri, October 2, which is also Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. Modern-day mental demons of India's finest archers tend to be the performance pressure that drags them down at every Olympics, and it is this mythical beast that the Archery Association of India seeks to prepare them against, through the league. The 6-team league is expected to run from October 2 – 14, and the likely venue would be the Yamuna Sports Complex. While Dr Joris doesn't disclose the teams which will be announced in coming days, social media activity points to possible franchises from Ranchi, Delhi, Telangana, Chennai, Bangalore and possibly a team from either Maharashtra or Rajasthan to honour the western flank warriors of the country. The team match will be contested over mixed team duels – each in Recurve and Compound (now an Olympic event) – and a total of 10 days will be devoted to round robin fixtures, with 3 matches per day. Each match will last 20 minutes, and the arrow shooting time has been reduced to 15 seconds from the internationally allotted 20 seconds, 'to pile the pressure and get them used to tension.' It must be recollected that many big names in Indian archery have wilted in the competition cauldron of Olympics, falling to nerves, even while winning in minimal pressure 'World Cups'. Korea, the world's premier Archery nation is known to simulate pressure tactics for its archers and put them under intense stress, in their domestic competitions. This promises to be a trial by fire, for Indian archers too, as crowds will be encouraged to create a noisy din. 'We want to make the event much faster so that it's a sterner Test,' Dr Ummacherial says. While Doordarshan will loyally broadcast the league, talks are underway for OTT presentation with JioStar and Sony both. Teams have been nudged to enlist brand ambassadors, and film stars and famous sportspersons will be unveiled in coming days, aligned to every team. While the doctor didn't divulge any details, a corporate that has been part of Indian archery's journey for many decades, is expected to take up the Ranchi franchise. The other franchise owners are not historically associated with archery. The inaugural season will see players drafted, and not auctioned, and each squad of 8 members (4 women & 4 men), can have 2 foreign archers on their roster, and are mandated to field 1 of them, amongst the 4 that will make up the team. An archer ranked in Top 10 in the world stands to earn USD 10,000, while someone that is Top 8 in India, but not Top 20 in world, will earn USD 8000. A few other rules, not part of international archery, have been included. Besides the shorter drawing and pull time, a shootoff in case of a tie, will have a sudden death, though an extra point will be given for a smack bullseye – besides the inner/outer points system of the concentric rings. The target distances remain 70 metres and 50 metres. It is also learnt that one point of contention at the ideating stage of the APL was the competition gear of archers. One idea floated was that teams will cosplay and pick a regional, traditional outfit to create the cultural vibe. Archery's technical officials with their sights on the ultimate goal of Olympic medal, though, insisted that archers stick to their international standard competition gear, but could turn up for interviews in ethnic wear, that highlights Indian culture. It's time for mythology to pave the path for the country's top archers to bust myths of their non-medalling and become modern day history-makers.

Coach Lee won't join Indian team before World archery championships
Renowned recurve coach Kisik Lee will not join the Indian team prior to the World archery championships in Gwangju, Korea, from September 5 to 12. Lee was supposed to take over as the Indian recurve team's head coach in August and guide the archers up to 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, but it is understood that his contract had not been finalised yet. 'Some papers are pending with the Sports Authority of India (SAI). These are small issues, related to tax payment,' Archery Association of India (AAI) treasurer Joris Paulose Ummacheril told The Hindu. Even though the 67-year-old US-based Korean has a coaching camp to conduct in November, the AAI expects him to join this year. 'We want him to join after the World championships, some time later this year,' said Ummacheril. Archery league Meanwhile, the AAI is looking for sponsors for its proposed archery league, scheduled from October 1 to 14. The league will have six teams with each side having eight archers, including four from recurve and four from compound. Every team will have two male and two female archers in recurve and compound. There will be two foreigners on each side.

Classic Legends to rev up exports, accelerate domestic network expansion
Premium motorcycle maker Classic Legends, owner of iconic brands Yezdi, Jawa and BSA, is revving up its international ride with exports slated to start this year to markets including the UK, Europe, Australia, Japan, and Latin America, while also accelerating domestic network expansion, its top officials said on Tuesday. A part of the Mahindra Group, the company, which launched its new model 2025 Yezdi Roadster priced between Rs 2.09 lakh and Rs 2.26 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) here, has, however, paused plans to launch its BSA bikes in the US due to the current tariff uncertainty, Classic Legends MD & Co-Founder Anupam Thareja told PTI here. In a joint interview, Classic Legends Chief Business Officer, Sharad Agarwal said the company is looking to double its overall sales this year to around 80,000 units from about 40,000 units annually clocked last year. "We are building a global distribution (network). We have launched BSA Bantam in the UK. We are sold out there now for the season," Thareja said when asked about the company's overseas expansion plans. Elaborating, he said, "We signed up Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Austria. We are signing up Australia. We have already signed up New Zealand." The BSA brand will target the developed markets such as Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the whole of Europe, the UK and the US, he noted. Thareja, however, said the plans to launch it in the US has been paused due to the current uncertainty after the US President decided to impose tariff amounting to a total of 50 per cent Indian goods. "US, I have no idea... Our bikes are on high seas. Our bikes are at customs there. We don't know what to do," he said, when asked about the expected dates of launch in the US. It could have been a big market because when BSA was the largest motorcycle brand in the world, USA was its largest market, he noted. Sharing the company's strategy for export markets, Thareja said while BSA will be exported to the developed markets, Jawa will target markets in Eastern Europe, Latin America, including Brazil, Argentine and Chile, and part of North Africa, where Jawa was very popular. "This will be the year where you will see our exports start," he asserted. In the domestic market, both Yezdi and Jawa are being sold along with a small quantity of the BSA model, Agarwal said. About overall sales expectations, he said, "This year we will the double our volumes. Last year, we did around the 40,000 units." In term of domestic sales network, Agarwal said the company has over 350 dealers and will be over 450 around the festive season of Diwali. "We aim to close this year with over 500 dealers and that will technically cover 80 per cent of the volumes in the sector," he added. The company will have sales and service network in the top 40 markets, the next 150 cities and key tier-III cities, Agarwal said. For this year, the company has launched four models, including the Yezdi Roadster, and another one will be introduced, he said without elaborating. Speaking at the launch event, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said Classic Legends is giving the Yezdi brand "the power to speak two languages" -- one, the language of memory, for those who remember it, who experienced it, who loved it "and the other language is the language of aspiration, who are going to take this forward in the future," he noted. The efforts would be to offer young customers not just a product but one that is authentic, that has depth, history and has the credibility, that a startup brand cannot offer, Mahindra noted.
