Bengaluru Metro home guard reunites passenger with lost gold and cash in 30 minutes: Report
In a reassuring instance of efficiency, a Bengaluru Metro passenger who accidentally left behind a bag containing gold jewellery, cash, and personal documents at a Green Line station got it back in less than 30 minutes, thanks to prompt action of a home guard on duty.
According to a report by Indian Express, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon at the Mahakavi Kuvempu Road Metro station, when Nivedita Bhat, a commuter travelling toward Silk Institute, forgot her bag on a bench at Platform 2.
The bag, which held valuable belongings, including a nuptial chain worth nearly ₹2 lakh, cash amounting to over ₹2,000, identity documents, cards, and a basic mobile phone, was noticed by Manjulamma, a 40-year-old home guard posted at the platform, the report added.

Spotting the unattended bag around 12.45 pm, the guard quickly secured it and informed Assistant Security Officer, who then contacted the Station Controller Gavaskar Naik.
Upon inspecting the contents, the officials realised the bag held significant valuables. The mobile phone inside, though a basic feature phone without a SIM, was still active, allowing the team to access saved contacts.
Using the contact number of a friend saved on the device, BMRCL officials managed to inform Nivedita, who was then asked to return to the station and reclaim her belongings.
The quick turnaround was made possible by BMRCL's well-defined lost-and-found protocol, officials said. 'Our staff acted swiftly and responsibly. The commuter's bag was safely handed over within half an hour,' a BMRCL spokesperson noted.
Manjulamma, originally from Turuvukere in Tumkur district, has served as a home guard with BMRCL for four years, the report further added.
BMRCL officials say that bags, jewellery, gadgets, and laptops rank among the most commonly misplaced items on the Metro network.

UP Congress workers, close to state chief Ajay Rai, arrested for 'harassing' woman over shop; party cries fowl
Two local Congress workers, said to be close to party's Uttar Pradesh unit chief Ajay Rai, were arrested on charges of molestation, robbery, and theft, police said on Friday. The arrest came after a woman lodged a complaint against the two and alleged she was harassed and forcibly evicted from her shop in Varanasi's Chetganj area. Local Station House Officer (SHO) Dilip Kumar Mishra said that the complainant, Chetganj resident Sachina Khatoon, had rented a shop in Hathua Market from Sanjay Singh and ran a boutique there, news agency PTI reported. Khatoon alleged that following Singh's death during the Covid-19 pandemic, two of his friends, Anand Pandey and Amit Pathak, began intimidating her and extorting money in the name of protection fees. "When she refused, they allegedly pressured her to vacate the shop and subjected her to various forms of harassment," SHO Mishra added. Khatoon reportedly claimed that she even got a stay order on the eviction from the court. Despite this order, in May last year, Pandey and Pathak planned a break-in into her shop and made off with all her belongings, she added. When she and her daughters resisted this, the two men berated and harassed them, police said as per her complaint. "Both Anand Pandey and Amit Pathak are said to be close associates of Congress state president Ajay Rai. A case of robbery, theft, and molestation has been registered against them. Both were arrested on Thursday and presented before the court, which subsequently sent them to jail," said the SHO. Meanwhile, the allegations were dismissed by Congress Metropolitan president Raghavendra Chaubey, who said that the arrests are a "premeditated conspiracy by the BJP government" to discredit their state chief Rai and the entire Congress party. Chaubey also defended the two arrested persons, describing them as "strong activists" of the Congress and instead accusing Khatoon of having filing a similar cases against "almost half a dozen individuals" in Varanasi. "This is her profession," Chaubey alleged, the news agency report mentioned.

Patuli doc loses 78k online after fake BSF call
Kolkata: A Patuli resident, a homoeopathy doctor by profession, lost Rs 78,054 in an online scam after receiving a fraudulent call from someone posing as a member of the Border Security Force (BSF). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The caller asked the victim to arrange a special check-up camp for BSF personnel, particularly to ensure "there was no Covid outbreak in the unit". The victim, a resident of New Raipur Road, reported receiving a call from an unidentified number around 7 pm on May 8. The caller requested permission to send BSF personnel from "Garia camp" to the doctor's clinic at Patuli for a check-up and demanded advance online payment for gate passes. "The caller convinced me to join a video call to verify my account details. They said they needed to pay my fees in advance so that gate passes could be issued. They mentioned that a senior BSF officer would make a video call to verify my accounts. Once the call was made, I followed their instructions without realising it was a scam," said the victim. Two unauthorised transactions were made from the victim's bank accounts. The first transaction of Rs 49,527 was processed through a UPI ID. The second of Rs 28,527 was made through BPAY. Both payments were transferred to an account linked to a credit card ending in 4784. The phone number associated with the fraudulent credit card has also been identified, said cops, adding that steps to block the transfer of money have already been initiated. This incident adds to the growing number of cyber fraud cases where scammers impersonate military or law enforcement personnel to gain victims' trust. The Patuli police have registered a complaint and launched an investigation into the matter along with the divisional cyber cell. They have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious calls immediately. "Scammers have found a new way to dupe people posting property ads online on online platforms for a long time now. This modus operandi, using health checks and Covid as a shield, is comparatively new. Be it flat owners or someone looking for a flat on rent or going for doctor consultations, these scammers have figured out a way to make money. To gain the trust of people, they are posing as officers from the Indian Army, CISF, police, and other govt organisations.
