Why Florida Traded for Russian Goalie Daniil Tarasov Post-Stanley Cup (Imagn Images)
Fresh off their second straight Stanley Cup victory, the Florida Panthers aren't taking a breather. While the champagne is still flowing in South Florida, the franchise has quietly added another piece to their roster puzzle.
On Thursday, the Panthers officially announced the acquisition of Russian goaltender Daniil Tarasov from the Columbus Blue Jackets, parting with a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft in return.
Daniil Tarasov to Florida: What the Panthers' latest trade says about their 2025 ambitions
Though the spotlight remains on their dominant title run over the Edmonton Oilers, this trade hints at the organization's forward-thinking approach—especially regarding goaltending depth. With veteran Sergei Bobrovsky still commanding the crease, Tarasov could serve as a promising understudy or even see regular ice time if plans shift over the offseason.
Tarasov, 26, hails from Novokuznetsk, Russia, and has spent the past four seasons with Columbus after being drafted in the third round (86th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft. While his NHL numbers so far reflect growing pains—posting a 19-34-6 record with a 3.44 GAA and a .898 save percentage—he showed flashes of brilliance, including a 26-save shutout against the New York Rangers on January 18, 2025.
Still, his ice time in Columbus diminished late in the season as the Blue Jackets shifted their focus to rising goaltender Jet Greaves, effectively pushing Tarasov down the depth chart.
That move made him expendable, and the Panthers saw an opportunity.
'On behalf of the Blue Jackets, I'd like to thank Daniil for his contributions to our organization over the past four years,' Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell said. 'He is an outstanding young man, and we wish he and his family well in the future.'
Now, Tarasov finds himself at a crucial point in his career. Set to become a restricted free agent on July 1, the Panthers must decide whether to offer him a new deal.
If re-signed, he could compete for the backup role behind Bobrovsky or gain more seasoning with the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL.
That decision may also hinge on Vitek Vanecek's future. Acquired from the San Jose Sharks, Vanecek is poised to hit unrestricted free agency. If Florida opts to retain him on a short-term deal, Tarasov's NHL role may have to wait.
Still, this low-risk trade adds a young, skilled goaltender to a franchise that clearly isn't content with just celebrating. Tarasov brings international experience, raw potential, and the hunger to prove himself—and in a championship-winning environment like Florida, the timing couldn't be better.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reveals why Justin Tucker is quietly accepting 10-game ban

Why Justin Tucker is serving a 10-game ban without appeal-Ian Rapaport explains the strategic move (Image credits: IG/X) Justin Tucker isn't fighting his suspension—but don't mistake that for surrender. In a calculated move that's caught NFL insiders' attention, the veteran kicker is accepting a 10-game ban without appeal, even as he denies serious misconduct allegations. With his NFL future uncertain and no team currently under contract, Tucker is playing the long game. This decision isn't just about damage control—it's a strategic pivot aimed at salvaging his career. Serving time without a team: Tucker's tactical choice NFL Network's Ian Rapoport broke down why Tucker isn't challenging the suspension despite maintaining his innocence. 'So, no appeal for Justin Tucker because he is not employed by a team,' Rapoport said, emphasizing the unique context. 'He can work out, can theoretically practice with a team… but cannot play in an actual game until after the ten weeks are over.' This allows Tucker to quietly serve the suspension now and return eligible—ready for a midseason team in need. His $6M-per-year value now hangs in limbo as he forfeits an estimated $3.52M in missed games. 'Will you let me sleep?': Shikhar Dhawan reveals smuggling girlfriend into room shared with Rohit Sharma; Hitman wasn't happy and said ...

Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma (PTI Photo) Former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has shared a personal story from the early days of his career in his autobiography, revealing details of a relationship he developed during the 2006 India A tour to Australia. In the book, Dhawan recounted how he secretly brought his girlfriend into the hotel room he was sharing with teammate Rohit Sharma , and how word of their relationship eventually spread through the team. During the tour, Dhawan met a woman with whom he quickly formed a strong bond, believing she might be his life partner. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "She was very beautiful, and suddenly I was in love again! I thought to myself, 'She is the one for me, and I am going to marry her," Dhawan wrote in his autobiography. The tour began well for Dhawan, with a solid start on the field, but he admitted that his focus shifted as he spent more time with his girlfriend, whom he refers to as Ellen (not her real name). "I started with a half-century in a practice game, and my tour was progressing well. After every game, I would go over to meet up with Ellen (not her real name) and I soon started smuggling her into my hotel room which I was sharing with Rohit Sharma. Now and then, he would complain in Hindi. 'Will you let me sleep?'" Spotted in Leeds! A senior national selector, who was on tour with us, spotted us walking in the lobby with our hands linked. It didn't even occur to me that I should let go of her hand, because to me, we were committing no crime. There was a good chance that if I had performed consistently on that Australia tour, I would have made it to the senior Indian side, but my performance kept dipping. 'How many dams will Jasprit Bumrah be able to construct?': R Ashwin tears into Mohammed Siraj

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj (AP Photo) NEW DELHI: Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has raised concerns over Mohammed Siraj 's performance in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, urging the pacer to focus on controlling the flow of runs rather than solely aiming for wickets. Siraj endured a tough outing, conceding runs at an economy rate of 4.05 and taking just two wickets across both innings. On a surface that offered little assistance to bowlers, Siraj gave away 122 runs in 27 overs in the first innings while claiming two wickets. His struggles continued in the second innings, where he went wicketless in 14 overs and conceded 51 runs. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "My only question to Siraj is... can you dry up the run flow? You don't have to pick up wickets. But can you not give away 4-5 runs every over? If runs are being leaked, then you have to bring Bumrah back into the attack. How many dams will Bumrah be able to construct?" Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. Jasprit Bumrah stood out as India's best bowler in England's first innings, claiming a five-wicket haul. Prasidh Krishna also picked up three wickets but was expensive, conceding runs at an economy of 6.40. Spotted in Leeds! Indian Cricket Team Hits the Streets Ahead of 1st Test vs England "Also, he gets tired, and his spells are pushed, and by then, partnerships are forged. Or you'd have to go with Jadeja, who has to step in and stem the flow of runs. Prasidh is playing for the first time, and he is inexperienced. So Siraj has to play the bankable role. Remember how Morne Morkel used to bowl 2/43 in 20 overs? That should be his role. In Bazball, you could go for 2/58, I guess. Siraj has to play that role, and if he is effective in it, then it would make a huge difference," said Ashwin. The veteran spinner further emphasized that Test cricket is as much about support roles as it is about individual brilliance. Team India Reach Birmingham | Updates on Arrival & Schedule "I agree that wicket-taking is important in Test cricket. But in Test cricket, you also bowl for one another. Ishant Sharma used to do it wonderfully. He played the Morkel role very well. He would hold the pressure on one end, and would have given just 40-odd runs after an entire day's play. Of course, I am not asking Siraj to do the same, but regulate the leakage of runs," he added. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.
