Alison Krauss & Union Station: Arcadia review

The Guardian28-03-2025
Arcadia is big news in US roots music. In the 14 years since Union Station's last LP, its Grammy-winning members have not been idle. Singer and fiddle player Alison Krauss, for one, has released solo outings and a second Robert Plant collaboration. Key foil Dan Tyminski (guitar, vocals), meanwhile, remains focused on his solo career. So Arcadia marks a fresh start with co-vocalist Russell Moore (ex-IIIrd Tyme Out). 'His pitch – he's just a laser beam,' said Krauss in the New York Times.
The two swap lead vocals across 10 tracks whose often mournful subject matter naturally harks back to times past. The production may be slick but rings with understated eloquence. The banjo-driven Richmond on the James records the dying words of a civil war soldier; Krauss's pristine vocal hovers above the fray, surveying blood and feeling. Moore sings Granite Mills, a righteous broadside against the 1874 death of women and children locked into their fire-ravaged factory.
But there are more recent shivers here. 'Goodbye to the world that I know,' sings Krauss on Looks Like the End of the Road, a Jeremy Lister composition she was drawn to during the pandemic. An adaptation of a 1951 Maurice Ogden poem, The Hangman, is a timely parable about being a bystander to evil.

Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem dance at Bad Bunny concert

"Gracias Benitoooooooo?Impresionante!!" Cruz, 51, wrote on Instagram Tuesday, Aug. 12, translating to, "Thank you Benito, impressive!" In the Instagram video, Cruz wears a black lacy top as she captures herself singing and dancing with Bardem, 56, close behind before she pans to Bad Bunny sitting and rapping on stage. She then pans back to a surprised Bardem wearing a black baseball cap. In fan videos, Cruz can also be seen introducing a track and shouting to the crowd: "Acho, PR es otra cosa!" translating to, "Hey, PR is something else!" Cruz and Bardem married in 2010 and have two children: Leo, 14, and Luna, 12. Bad Bunny, the Latin superstar born Benito Ocasio, kicked off his No Me Quiero Ir de Aqui (I Don't Want to Leave Here) residency July 11 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, the island's largest indoor arena. The first nine dates were reserved for local residents only, as Bad Bunny, 31, wanted to pay tribute to his homeland. He'll continue his performances every weekend through Sept. 14 for shows that are already boosting tourism in Puerto Rico. At another show, the Grammy-winning reggaeton superstar invited actor Austin Butler to join him on stage, as seen in viral fan footage shared on social media. Austin Butler recalls trippy Bad Bunny concert after taking edible: 'My brain is in two movies' Butler explained to "Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon that his concert euphoria wasn't just a musical high. "Somebody gave me an edible right before the show, and I thought that was a good idea at the time," Butler said. "It's like my brain is in two movies." Bad Bunny's concerts are in support of his chart-topping sixth studio album, "Debi Tirar Mas Fotos," which reflects the musical styles he grew up with and lyrically tackles the cultural identity and the socio-political challenges of the island. The album's all-stadium world tour kicks off Nov. 21 in Santo Domingo and ends July 22 in Brussels, Belgium. The tour does not currently have any dates in the continental United States. Tristan Rogers dead: General Hospital star dies after battle with lung cancer

Tristan Rogers has died at the age of 79, his manager confirmed in a sad statement. The General Hospital actor's death comes just weeks after a statement revealed he had been diagnosed with lung cancer. His manager Meryl Soodak said: "He loved being [Robert] Scorpio and he created that role from nothing [on General Hospital]. He was supposed to work a day and he ended up making it into something huge. "He was just a genuinely loyal, kind human being and he loved his family." Speaking to ABC7, Soodak said the actor passed away Friday morning after a being diagnosed with lung cancer. He also noted that Rogers had never been a smoker. Just weeks earlier, Tristan's friend and publicist, Anthony Turk, shared a press release to reveal the sad news of his cancer diagnosis. It read: "'Beloved Emmy-winning actor Tristan Rogers, best known for his role as Robert Scorpio on the daytime drama, General Hospital, is sharing with fans that he has been diagnosed with cancer. "While he remains hopeful and is working closely with his medical team on a treatment plan, this is a challenging time for Tristan and his family." He went on to request "privacy and understanding" and added the family was facing "emotional and physical burdens that come with this diagnosis". Anthony concluded: "'They are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support and love from their friends and family. Tristan sends his love to his fans and wants them to know how much he appreciates their loyalty and encouragement over the years. "This support means more to him now than ever." Tristan had been a part of the stateside soap since 1980. He had taken a step back in recent years, but did reprise his role last year. His final time on air on the show came on November 12 last year. As well as appearing in General Hospital, Tristan had other big roles on soaps in the US. He featured in Young and Restless as Colin Atkinson, while he also starred as Hunter Jones on Bold and Beautiful. Other credits to his name came in the likes of Walt Disney Pictures' The Rescuers Down Under, where he was the voice of Jake. And he also starred in Four Dimensions of Greta in 1972, The Flesh and Blood Show in the same year and Sex Farm from the following year. Breathtaking new film 'that needs to be seen' quietly added to Netflix

Netflix has quietly dropped a brand-new thriller described as 'harrowing' and 'riveting', and with prestigious talent involved, on its streaming platform. With surprisingly little fanfare after the keen attention on previous other Netflix Friday film releases including highly anticipated sequel Happy Gilmore 2 and rom-com obsession My Oxford Year, Night Always Comes has arrived. The movie, starring Fantastic Four actress Vanessa Kirby, is based on the best-selling novel by Willy Vlautin and follows Kirby's former sex worker Lynette, a desperate woman who risks everything to try and raise $25,000 (£ 18,432) to secure the house that represents a future for her family. The official synopsis adds: 'On a frantic a dangerous odyssey through a single night, Lynette is forced to confront her dark past in order to finally break free.' Directed by Benjamin Caron – who previously directed Kirby in her Bafta-winning role as Princess Margaret in The Crown – Night Always Comes also includes Jennifer Jason Lee as Lynette's chaotic mother, The Peanut Butter Falcon's Zack Gottsagen as her brother, Julia Fox, Lioness star Michael Kelly and Eli Roth among its cast. Caron has cited the Safdie brothers' Uncut Gems and Good Time as an influence on his film's 'breakneck momentum' according to The Guardian. Fans have expressed their excitement over watching the film this evening, with Merlin commenting on X of Kirby's performance: 'Back with a bang.' 'High stakes and Vanessa Kirby? Count me in,' added another fan. 'If the trailer has me stressed, I can't imagine the full movie,' admitted @RolandNorbertB. With reviews just starting to trickle in on its first day available on Netflix, Night Always Comes currently sits on a fresh score of 60% according to critical reactions on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. While that might be on the lower side, there are only 15 reviews uploaded there at the time of publication, which is too few for a proper consensus, and no fan reactions as of yet. 'Vanessa Kirby commands the screen in a harrowing spiral of bad choices, delivering a performance as riveting as the story is nightmarish,' praised critic Joseph Robinson of Night Always Comes, while CBR admired Oscar nominee Kirby's 'powerhouse performance'. Heaven of Horror's Karina Adelgaard went further, sharing: 'Vanessa Kirby delivers a portrayal that is nuanced, heartbreaking, intense, and absolutely breathtaking.' Meanwhile, Collider insisted Night Always Comes was 'a film that needs to be seen'. 'A decent ticking-clock thriller that relies on its amusingly sleazy underworld and a barrage of strong performances to carry its occasionally flimsy and on-the-nose storytelling,' wrote Film Feeder's Jack Martin, while The Hollywood Reporter observed: 'Netflix's Night Always Comes is more compelling than the average original streaming movie even if it could use an extra shot of emotional power.' Critic Ben Sears also highlighted the lack of publicity for Netflix's latest film, noting that it 'rises above' most of the streamer's other original movies and 'deserves more than being unceremoniously dumped on the platform'. More Trending Others weren't quite as convinced though, with IndieWire's Kate Erbland penning: 'Handsomely made but tediously plotted, Kirby is more than deserving of this kind of meaty, she's-in-every-frame role, but Night Always Comes sunsets long before we get there.' Other new releases this week included controversial adult animation Fixed, which has shocked viewers with its explicit scenes and 'raunchy dog' niche genre, while fans globally are also still lapping up pop culture sensation KPop Demon Hunters. This film recently catapulted into the most-watched list of films ever on Netflix, claiming second place with 184.6million views after just eight weeks on the platform. Night Always Comes is streaming exclusively on Netflix now. Got a story?
