Actress Juhi Chawla, who made her Bollywood debut with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), married businessman Jay Mehta in 1995. This was Jay Mehta's second marriage; his first wife, Sujata Birla, tragically died in a plane crash in 1990. Sujata Birla was the sister of industrialist Yash Birla. Initially, Juhi Chawla kept her marriage under wraps. In an interview with Rajeev Masand, she shared how Jay Mehta courted her and how her mother-in-law supported her during challenging times.
When asked why she chose to keep the marriage a secret, the Ishq (1997) actress explained, 'Everyone did that back then. There was no internet, and not every phone had a camera, so it was easier. At the time, I was establishing myself in the industry and working on some good films. When I agreed to marry Jay, I was terrified that it would spell the end of my career. Around the same time, my mother passed away, and I felt as though I was losing everything I had.'
Juhi Chawla revealed that her relationship with Jay Mehta began before she entered the film industry, though they lost touch once her acting career took off. While living in Andheri, Mumbai, she remained focused on her work until she ran into Jay Mehta again at a friend's dinner party. They reconnected, and he began sending her flowers and letters, once even sending a truckload of roses on her birthday. After a year of courtship, he proposed, and Juhi Chawla accepted his love after another year.
She shared that her mother had passed away before their marriage, leaving her utterly devastated. She had made the decision to step away from her career after tying the knot. According to Juhi Chawla, 'They say, when one door closes, another window opens. My husband Jay, my in-laws, especially my mother-in-law, took such good care of me. There was a period when I was miserable throughout the day. My mother-in-law always said to me, 'I consider you my daughter, not my daughter-in-law. Do whatever makes you happy.' She gave me the freedom to continue working.'
In an interview with Doordarshan Sahyadri, Juhi Chawla mentioned that the wedding was initially planned as a grand celebration at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, with a guest list of around a thousand people. However, the plans were cancelled following her mother's passing. Juhi Chawla was in deep shock and feared that her career would come to an end, as was often the case with married actresses in Bollywood. Her mother-in-law's support proved invaluable during this period, she cancelled all the wedding arrangements and respected Juhi Chawla's wishes. Though invitations had already been sent out across the globe due to Jay Mehta's business network, her mother-in-law insisted that Juhi Chawla should not be pressured into a lavish wedding, offering her reassurance and emotional support.
Juhi Chawla also spoke about the heartbreaking loss of her younger brother, who remained in a coma for several days after suffering a brain haemorrhage. She spent countless hours at the hospital, struggling to grasp the doctors' explanations or the medical procedures being carried out, while he remained on a ventilator until his passing. The experience left a deep emotional scar, and she expressed a heartfelt wish that no one else should have to endure such a loss.

‘Failure of Alia Bhatt's Jigra did not shock us,' says Karan Johar as recalls being ‘disappointed' by the film's fate at the box office

Despite opening to widely favourable reviews and eventually making it onto several distinguished 'best Indian/Bollywood movies of 2024' lists, director Vasan Bala's action thriller Jigra, featuring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina in the lead roles, ended up being a massive box-office bomb. Mounted on a reported budget of Rs 80 crore, the movie ended up making only Rs 56 crore, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, delivering a heavy blow to the makers. Although disappointed by the outcome, producer Karan Johar, recently revealed that he does not regret making the movie. He went one step further and maintained that he was, in fact, 'proud of the film'. Describing Vasan's 'syntax' as individualistic and brilliant, Karan stated that he is one of the finest minds working in Bollywood now. 'Jigra had a certain syntax that was not quintessentially mainstream. We had realised that when we watched the movie. But we all believed in it together. None of us were not on the same page. We knew what we were going for. Yes, we were hoping against hope that it would find a wider audience… but we all understand it,' he shared during a chat with Suchin Mehrotra on his YouTube channel. Karan further expressed hope that the filmmaker would continue on the same path, creating films he truly believed in. 'Vasan's meta-referencing, quirks and style of absolutely breaking the grammar of filmmaking, such things may not always land, right? But should he stop making films like this because of that? No! He must always make films that he believes in,' he stated. Mentioning that he would love to collaborate with Vasan Bala again, Karan said he would gladly agree to produce another project helmed by the filmmaker, no questions asked, regardless of Jigra's outcome. He added, 'I really believe in him.' Karan continued, 'Yes, we were disappointed, dejected and sad. But we are all very proud of that film, even today. Even now, we have a group comprising Vasan, me and Alia. Vasan has a brilliant self-deprecating sense of humour. He will make fun of himself in the most unique way possible. We still send messages on that group. I do believe that a decade or two later, we will reference Jigra as something that broke ground, something that Alia, Vasan and the rest of us were so brave to do. 'I'm very proud of Jigra. There are films that I'm not proud of. This film may have failed at the box office, but to me and our studio, it's a success story. Yes, every film is flawed; we can discuss and analyse those flaws. But did it shock us when the film failed? No, we understood it, and we did discuss it. We were pragmatic enough to know that we could be in a hit-miss zone; that we may hit the bullseye or we might miss it. We were self-aware. So, its outcome did not come to us as a devastating shock to any of us,' he added.

‘Param Sundari' trailer promises a colourful cross-cultural romance

The makers of Param Sundari, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra, have unveiled the trailer of this vibrant cross-cultural romantic comedy. Set against the lush, monsoon-soaked landscapes of Kerala, the film captures a delightful blend of contrasting worlds — from serene backwaters and ancient churches to playful bike rides through rain-washed streets. The trailer introduces audiences to Sidharth as a charming Delhi boy who finds himself smitten with a Kerala girl, played by Janhvi. Their romance blossoms amid a clash of cultures, bringing plenty of lighthearted moments alongside deeper differences in life philosophies. Dropping the trailer online, Maddock Films shared, 'Dilli ka munda Param is bringing full-on Punjabiyon ka swag aur siyappa to Sundari's God's Own Country! The biggest love story of the year — #ParamSundari… In cinemas 29th August.' Fans were quick to shower praise. One wrote, 'It looks like a fun entertainer, smiling throughout the trailer. Can't wait to watch it on the big screen.' Another commented, 'Janhvi's dialogue at the end was too funny… Old Bollywood is back!' A third fan added, 'The chemistry of Sid and Janhvi is beautiful. Param Sundari suits them perfectly.' The film also stars Renji Panicker, Siddhartha Shankar, Manjot Singh, Sanjay Kapoor, and Inayat Verma in pivotal roles. The visual appeal of the movie owes credit to cinematographer Santhana Krishnan Ravichandran, while Manish Pradhan handles editing and Sachin–Jigar compose the soundtrack. Directed by Tushar Jalota and presented by Dinesh Vijan, Param Sundari promises a refreshing dose of romance and humour, celebrating love that transcends borders. The film hits theatres on August 29, inviting audiences to witness Punjab's flair meeting Kerala's charm.
