This underrated Steve Carell movie is one of my favorite coming-of-age comedies — and it's now on Prime Video

Tom's Guidea day ago

Steve Carell is known for big-budget comedies like "The 40 Year-Old Virgin," "Crazy, Stupid, Love." and the "Anchorman" franchise, but some of the actor's best work is in smaller-scale fare like "Little Miss Sunshine," "Dan in Real Life" and "The Way, Way Back".
In particular, that latter title — which sees an against-type performance from Carell as a nightmare stepfather — is a surefire summertime charmer, complete with a fantastic ensemble full of some of Hollywood's funniest people. And, best of all, it's currently available to stream on Prime Video.
Amazon's streaming service is stocked with great titles across all genres, including crowd-pleasing comedies, and "The Way, Way Back" is certainly no exception. The coming-of-age story serves up humor and heart in equal turns, and will instantly transport you back to those long, sunny days of youthful, no-school summer. Here's why you should add the sweet teen comedy to your Prime Video watch list.
Written and directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash in their directorial debuts, 2013's "The Way, Way Back" centers on Duncan (Liam James), an introverted 14-year-old on summer vacation in a New England beach town with his mother Pam (Toni Collete), her overbearing boyfriend Trent (Steve Carell) and Trent's daughter Steph (Zoe Levin).
Trent is quite hard on Duncan — the older man tells the teen to rate himself on a scale of one to ten and harshly dubs him a three — and, even worse, he's caught by the boy cheating on Pam with a friend's wife (Amanda Peet). To escape the messiness of it all, Duncan finds solace at the rundown local water park, Water Wizz, where he encounters a merry band of colorful employees (played by Maya Rudolph, Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, among others), all led by wisecracking but compassionate park manager Owen (Sam Rockwell).
Though Duncan's family is none the wiser about where he's spending his summer days, the teen is hired by Owen for odd jobs around the park and soon the wallflower opens up, even catching the attention of Susanna (AnnaSophia Robb), the pretty daughter of his neighbor Betty (a scene-stealing Allison Janney).
There's a sweet nostalgia that permeates "The Way, Way Back" — fittingly, the title refers to sitting in the third row of seats in old-school station wagons — and a youthful relatability to Duncan's story.

And along with a believably villainous turn from usual good-guy Steve Carell, the unexpected buddy duo of Sam Rockwell and Liam James is an especially delightful attribute. Both actors received Critics' Choice nominations for their performances, as did the comedy film as a whole.
Rockwell's warm and witty screen work, in particular, was lauded by critics: David Gritten at The Daily Telegraph wrote: "Rockwell seizes on this role and milks it for all it's worth." And for The Guardian, Catherine Shoard also showed love to Carell and Collette: "There's some terrific performances – particularly from Collette, putting flesh on some quite bare bones, and Carell, a wholly plausible, half-sympathetic overgrown jock with a bullying charm."
On Rotten Tomatoes, where the movie has an 83% approval rating, critical consensus reads: "Despite its familiar themes, 'The Way Way Back' makes use of its talented cast, finely tuned script, and an abundance of charm to deliver a funny and satisfying coming-of-age story."

K. Michelle Checks Interviewer About Her Country Music Roots: ‘I Didn't Fly Here — I Grew Here'

Source: Jason Kempin / Getty More Black artists are embracing country music than ever before, as many have finally felt that the time is right to pursue a genre of music where Black musicians have traditionally been overlooked. In a recent interview, K. Michelle, known for her R&B music, corrected an interviewer about her country music roots during an appearance at the 2025 CMA Fest. When the interviewer told K. Michelle that she 'didn't grow up with country music,' the former Love & Hip Hop star offered a reply that cleared up any misconceptions. 'I did grow up in country music. You do this all the time. I'm from Memphis, Tennessee. I got a scholarship for yodeling — that's how I paid for college,' she fired back. 'My start, to you, has been when the Judd [family] reached out to me to go pay Naomi Judd tribute.' 'It's always been a thing for me. I was told I could not sing country music because I was Black, but it was something I had always been doing and will continue to do. I'm born and raised in Tennessee. I grew here, I didn't fly here,' K. Michelle added. 'I am so happy to be able to sing the songs of who I am and what it is I want to. So, I'm happy that people like you are just discovering me though' she said. When the interviewer pointed out that K. Michelle was an unknown to contemporary country music radio, she replied 'Well, you don't hear a lot of women in contemporary radio, period, right now. And you really don't hear Black ones, but you will.' In 2024, K. Michelle officially signed to BMG Nashville and released her first country single, 'Tennessee,' which was released earlier this year. Her debut country album Puddin's Outla Music is set to be released in 2025. SEE ALSO K. Jim Jones Is Cool With Ciara Pressing Him To Marry Longtime Girlfriend Chrissy, Social Media Disagrees

Remember back in the days when people could 'pull your coattails' to something in a kind and respectful way, and you took in the advice gracefully? Well, that's what happened in a surprisingly cordial exchange between Ciara and rapper/reality star Jim Jones at the BET Awards on Monday night. Cici jumped into a conversation Jones was having with The Breakfast Club in their media space at the awards, telling him he should stop playing and put a ring on it, in so many words. She was referring to his long-delayed engagement to girlfriend Chrissy Lampkin, which has played out over multiple VH1 reality shows, mostly Love & Hip Hop New York and its spinoff show, Chrissy and Mr. Jones. Per multiple reports, the longtime couple, who don't have children, have been together for 20 years. Chrissy just celebrated her 54th birthday last month. Jones will be 49 in July. Over the years, they've gotten engaged twice but never did the deed. Chrissy's contentious relationship with Jones's overbearing mother has been one of the reasons, as well as Jones's reluctance to marry. In 2019, Lumpkin appeared on Love & Hip Hop and said that tying the knot was no longer a big deal. Ciara's unsolicited take on the situation could have been met with hostility, but she does have a frame of reference. She and her husband, NFL quarterback Russell Wilson, are celebrating ten years together in July. They have three children together, and Ciara's oldest child, Future, is from a previous relationship with the rap star of the same name. 'Why not?' Ciara said as she sat down next to Jones. 'Like y'all have lived life in every capacity anyone could live it in. You're living like you've already done it, so let's just seal it properly because you know what? She deserves it. You deserve it. Why not? I look at y'all and I'm like, they're so, he is so fly, Chrissy is so beautiful and so dope and she holds you down, like down down down. This is the spirit talking through me right here.' Well, Ciara does have a point, given the length of time the two have been dating. And Jones acknowledged it when The Breakfast Club host Loren LaRosa asked him about it. 'It was a great piece of advice,' he said. 'Honestly, I needed that encouragement. I needed to hear that. Especially from somebody who's active in preaching what she's teaching. A lot of people have so many different opinions, and they're nowhere near marriage or any type of great relationship or in any position to give me any type of advice about what I should be doing.' See social media's reaction to Ciara's advice below.
