Revanth moots lowering assembly contest age to 21

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday pushed for reducing the minimum age to contest assembly elections from 25 to 21 years. He argued that younger leaders must be given space in lawmaking to drive India's future. Paying floral tributes to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 81st birth anniversary at the statue opposite the Telangana secretariat, the CM said the move would carry forward Rajiv's vision of empowering youth. "It was Rajiv who gave voting rights to every Indian above 18 and ensured that the youth decide the future of the nation. Today, inspired by the same spirit, we want to give every 21-year-old the opportunity to shape lawmaking in the legislative assemblies," Revanth said. "Young IAS and IPS officers are successfully heading district administration and law and order responsibilities. If they can thrive at 21, why not as MLAs?" he said. Rahul Gandhi factor Revanth went a step further, tying the proposal to the Congress' national ambitions. "The Telangana assembly will pass a resolution urging the Centre to amend the Constitution once Rahul Gandhi becomes prime minister. To realise this dream, Rahul should be made the PM. With inspiration from Rajiv, we will not rest till we make Rahul the prime minister," he declared, calling upon the youth to rally behind the Congress. The CM credited Rajiv's progressive ideas for ushering in computers, telecom, and technological reforms. He recalled how Rajiv lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 and ensured 33 percent reservation for women in local bodies, laying the foundation for future legislation on women's reservation in state assemblies and Parliament. "Rajiv's progressive spirit continues to guide us," he said, positioning the age reduction proposal as both a tribute to Rajiv's legacy and a rallying cry for Rahul's leadership. Revanth alleged that despite the BJP's reluctance, it was Rajiv's vision that sowed the seeds of women's political empowerment. He also praised Rajiv's partnership with technocrat Sam Pitroda, which spurred the information technology revolution. "In Hyderabad, the foundation for Hi-Tec City was laid during Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy's tenure as chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh. Today, Hyderabad stands as a hub for IT, data centres, and global capability centres, with Telugu technocrats playing crucial roles in Silicon Valley," he said. Telangana's roadmap Drawing a parallel between Rajiv's vision and the Congress govt's current agenda, Revanth said his govt is working to make Hyderabad compete with the world's best cities through projects like Future City and Musi river rejuvenation. He highlighted recent measures, including resolving long-pending Scheduled Caste categorisation and implementing 42 percent reservations, as proof of his govt's commitment to inclusive growth. Ex-IGP announces free coaching to IAS, IPS aspirants from J&K, Ladakh & Northeast states

Former inspector general of police (IGP) Basant Rath, on Wednesday, announced free coaching to IAS-IPS aspirants from Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and northeast at his coaching centre coming up rapidly at Noida. The former IGP said that he will start enrolling for his coaching institute next month. (File) 'Right from my police training days in Poonch district when P L Gupta was my IGP, Jammu, I knew that I must do something for the students of J&K and Ladakh. He inspired me to reach out to people as people, not as numbers in government files. To empower them as a community. We had our arguments and differences, but he was magnanimous enough to let me do things my way even though I was a mere probationer. And he was a brilliant mentor. A bit blunt, though,' he told HT. 'Education is the most powerful tool to empower our voiceless, faceless masses. My UPSC civil services coaching institute is an extension of that original spark. Nothing has changed. It is my way of saying thank you to the big man for everything he did to protect me from the rogues in the IAS-IPS and politics,' he added. The former IGP said that he will start rolling for his coaching institute next month. 'I've found a name for it. RANK 62 Academy. My All India Rank in UPSC civil services examination was 62 in 2000. If any reasonably hardworking student gives me 5,000 hours and four serious attempts, I'll get them a rank higher than what I got. That is my conviction. If they don't make it to the final list in four attempts, I'll return the entire fee with 6% compound interest,' asserted Rath. The former IGP, during service in J&K, provided books to many civil services aspirants from poor families. Earlier, the former IGP put out a post on his Facebook page announcing the decision.
