‘Waiting for Britney Spears': 5 shocking (allegedly true) stories from a former tabloid writer
In his new book, 'Waiting for Britney Spears: A True Story, Allegedly' — a mix of fact and fiction — music writer and L.A. native Jeff Weiss brings us back to the last gasp of the celebrity gossip-mongering machine of the early aughts. It was the prelapsarian age of the dumb phone, when we weren't all taking photos of everything all the time and paparazzi were commanding six figures for shots of Angelina Jolie's baby bump.
Fresh out of college and dreaming of Pulitzer glory, Weiss instead takes a job with Star magazine — called Nova in the book — to pay his rent and winds up being present during ugly episodes of the celebrity stalking era: Britney Spears' meteoric rise and career lows in the early 2000s, a few years before her personal and business affairs were placed under a court-ordered conservatorship controlled by her father, Jamie.
Weiss bears witness to this particularly gruesome episode with clenched teeth, filing dispatches for rent money alongside photographer Mel Bouzad (referred to as Oliver Bournemouth in the book), who acts as his Virgil, smoothing the writer's way through Hollywood's red velvet ropes. Weiss in short order is engulfed by Spears' world until it becomes his organizing principle. The writer becomes an unrepentant co-conspirator in the plot to knock down Spears, one breaking news item at a time. 'We wanted more and more, until she had no energy left to resist and no place left to hide,' writes Weiss. Here are some of the most shocking stories from the book.
As a cub reporter in 2004, Weiss gets a hot tip about Spears' wedding to Kevin Federline at the Studio City home of a Spears confidant. Accompanied by Bouzad, Weiss scouts a neighboring house and pays off its owner in order to witness the nuptials next door. 'An hour before the ceremony, the bridegroom swaggers in in his white undershirt,' Weiss writes. 'The groomsmen look like lost members of 98 Degrees, wearing squiggly goatees and gummy-worm braids.' After the reception, where Federline 'removes [Britney's] garter belt with his teeth,' the wedding party packs into black SUVs wearing monogrammed Juicy Couture sweatsuits: 'Britney's announces Mrs. Federline. His just reads, Hers.'
Weiss' Britney beat is temporarily placed on hold so he can dig up information on Ben Affleck's budding relationship with actor Jennifer Garner. In search of the duo, Weiss drives to Affleck's Brentwood house. He's in luck: Affleck materializes and hops into his car, prompting Weiss to tail him. 'My wobbling, elephantine car is no match for his agile V12 Mercedes, but I somehow keep up,' he writes. But Affleck is onto Weiss and swerves across lanes of traffic along the 101 en route to the San Fernando Valley. Weiss is nearly side-swiped by a Range Rover, 'and suddenly, it's over. [Affleck's] car heads into the parking lot of Bob's Big Boy.' When the visibly shaken driver emerges from the Mercedes, it turns out to be Affleck's brother, Casey.
On assignment for People magazine in 2005, Weiss attempts to sneak onto Brad Pitt's beachfront compound in Santa Barbara, hoping to grab some tasty morsels about the megastar's new relationship with Jolie. He has been tasked, alongside a two-paparazzi team, with monitoring Jolie's son's fourth birthday party. 'I'm on the verge of breaking open one of the decade's biggest stories,' he writes. 'For the last six months, you haven't been able to buy a Snickers at the supermarket without missing the all-caps headlines' about the love triangle between Pitt, Jolie and Jennifer Aniston. No sooner does Weiss climb a bluff and whip out his binoculars than he is surrounded by 'four goons' with Glocks tucked into their shorts. He is harassed and finally released, but not before Pitt appears. 'He shakes his head slowly, confidently, letting me know that I've lost.' The next day, Weiss himself becomes a tabloid story: In the U.K., the Daily Mail headline reads, 'People Paparazzo Popped Trying to Snake Pitt.' Weiss has his first 15 seconds of infamy.
In 2007, Weiss and Bouzad chase Spears — recently divorced from Federline — to a nondescript hair salon in Tarzana. 'Shielded by her security, Britney scurries in like a frightened deer,' Weiss writes. From an open window, Weiss hears Spears tell the hairdresser, 'I want you to buzz my hair off.' When she refuses, Spears grabs the trimmer and clicks it on: 'The extensions are hacked into lifeless scraps … the stray hairs curl on the floor like writhing snakes.' Hours later, Spears' hair is auctioned on eBay. 'The bidding reaches $1 million before the online auction house removes the listing. The authenticity of the hair cannot be verified.' In her own memoir, 'The Woman in Me,' Spears explained the reason for the bold act. 'Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back,' Spears wrote.
That same year, Spears attempts a musical comeback with a new album and series of one-off performances. Weiss nabs an exclusive interview with the pop star at a rented mansion in the Hollywood Hills. It doesn't go as planned. A disoriented and agitated Spears shows up late, rejects the pre-selected wardrobe choices for the photo shoot and locks herself in the bathroom. Finally, Weiss' moment arrives. Over lunch, 'Britney shrugs and summons me like she has something to confess.' Weiss is about to get his first face-to-face with Spears, but it's a false alarm: She thinks Weiss is a production assistant. 'She hands me her empty plate filled with bones and fat to throw away.'

Summer Game Fest: ‘Wu-Tang: Rise of The Deceiver', ‘Marvel's Deadpool VR,' ‘Marvel Cosmic Invasion', ‘Resident Evil Requiem' & Other Big Announcments
Source: Wu-Tang: Rise of The Deceiver / Marvel's Deadpool VR / Marvel Cosmic Invasion / Resident Evil Requiem / Summer Game Fest G3, also known as Summer Game Fest, Geoff Keighley's replacement for E3, kicked off on Friday, June 6, and it was full of some fantastic video game announcements. Geoff Keighly kicked off the annual live show, promising plenty of significant announcements and reveals, and for the most part, he kept his word. HHW Gaming was in the building, the YouTube Theater to be specific, as we are currently in Los Angeles to get hands-on with A LOT of games, so keep it locked for plenty of previews. Until then, let's recap Keighley's Summer Game Fest, in case you missed the event, starting with what we feel were the most significant announcements. Wu-Tang: Rise of The Deceiver Source: Brass Lion Entertainment / Wu-Tang: Rise of the Deceiver One of the biggest surprises of the show was the announcement of Brass Lion Entertainment's Wu-Tang: Rise of the Deceiver . It marks the first Wu-Tang Clan-inspired video game 25 years following the release of 1999's Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style. The game was simultaneously announced during Summer Game Fest and the opening night of the Staten Island rap stable's farewell tour. Rise of the Deceiver is described as a 3-player co-op action experience where players take control of characters blessed with abilities bestowed upon them by members of the Wu-Tang Clan to combat enemies attempting to invade their home. The official breakdown of the game on YouTube reads: Rebuild Shaolin – Ghostface Killah is calling on you to rescue his Wu brothers – who aid you in your battle to save the dreams of the people. Defeat the forces of the Deceiver to elevate Shaolin into a hopeful and thriving community. Battle With the Wu – Harness the powers of the Wu-Tang Clan to fight fantastical enemies through the Chambers of a surreal dreamworld. Dynamic gameplay soundtrack, including classic Wu-Tang songs + new material, overseen by legendary producer Just Blaze. Protect Ya Neck – Collect powerful Jewels to customize your fighting style and iconic fits to show off your drip. Combine forces with your friends in increasingly challenging battle Chambers and beat back the Deceiver's swarms. The game, which has been in development for three years, began as part of Ghostface Killah-produced film Angel of Dust, which was also directed by The RZA. No word on when we can expect the game to arrive, but we will definitely keep our ears and eyes to the video game streets for this one. You can wishlist Wu-Tang: Rise of the Deceiver on Steam right now. Source: DOTEMU / Tribute Games / Marvel Cosmic Invasion When Marvel Cosmic Invasion was first announced we knew we could pond on Marvel villains with a roster of MCU characters like Spider-Man, Nova, Captain America, Wolverine, Nova, Storm, Phyla-Vell and Venom were just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the 15 playable characters you can choose from to take on Annihilus. Also joining in on the galactic-sized quest to stop Annihilus' attack, which spans across the galaxy, will be She-Hulk and Rocket Raccoon, who will help take on other threats, such as the Mad Titan Thanos and Sauron. We fully expect more of our favorite Marvel supers to be announced ahead of Marvel Cosmic Invasion's 2025 release. Source: Twitsted Pixel / Oculus Studios / Marvel's Deadpool VR Marvel Games is absolutely cooking! They got Marvel Cosmic Invasion , Iron Man , Blade , Marvel Tōken: Fighting Souls, and now Marvel's Deadpool VR all in the pipeline, which still keeps us excited even after EA and the now-shuttered Cliffhanger Games canceled Black Panther . Deadpool is no stranger to the video game space , thanks to High Moon Studios' Deadpool game, which was released in 2013. However, this new game marks the popular anti-hero's first foray into the VR space. Marvel's Deadpool VR will feature Neil Patrick Harris as the titular character, but based on the trailer, he perfectly encapsulates the energy Ryan Reynolds has brought to the character thanks to the hit Marvel movies. We also get to see some unique gameplay physics, such as Deadpool using his blown-off arm to chuck at enemies or bash an enemy's head on a sickle while being decapitated. Essentially, 'if you can imagine it, you can probably do it' is the premise here, and that appears to be the case with Marvel's Deadpool VR . While Marvel's Deadpool VR isn't the format we expected to see Deadpool in, it definitely looks like a fun time. Source: Capcom / Resident Evil Requiem Clearly, this was the game Geoff Keighley kept close to the vest based on how emotional he got announcing it. Initially, there was a bit of a fakeout with the RE dev team confirming a new Resident Evil game was in the works, and more will be revealed when the franchise celebrates its 30th anniversary next March. It turned out that the wait would be only 30 minutes. Keighley was choking up as he announced the biggest surprise of the day, a first look at the game that will have RE fans taking control of Grace Ashcroft, an FBI agent. Ashcroft is a last name familiar only to hardcore fans of the franchise. Grace Ashcroft is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, one of the sole survivors of 2003's Resident Evil Outbreak . The trailer doesn't reveal much, but it does hint at a return to Raccoon City, the setting for the first three games in the franchise. We will definitely share more about this game in the near future, before its launch on February 27, 2026. A demo has been confirmed for Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, in August. These four games were not the only announcements. You can hit the gallery below for more trailers.
How groundbreaking gay author Edmund White paved the way for other writers
NEW YORK -- Andrew Sean Greer, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, remembers the first time he read Edmund White. It was the summer of 1989, he was beginning his second year at Brown University and he had just come out. Having learned that White would be teaching at Brown, he found a copy of White's celebrated coming-of-age novel, 'A Boy's Own Story.' 'I'd never read anything like it — nobody had — and what strikes me looking back is the lack of shame or self-hatred or misery that imbued so many other gay male works of fiction of that time,' says Greer, whose 'Less' won the Pulitzer for fiction in 2018. "I, of course, did not know then I was reading a truly important literary work. All I knew is I wanted to read more. 'Reading was all we had in those days — the private, unshared experience that could help you explore your private life," he said. "Ed invented so many of us." White, a pioneer of contemporary gay literature, died this week at age 85. He left behind such widely read works as 'A Boy's Own Story' and 'The Beautiful Room Is Empty' and a gift to countless younger writers: Validation of their lives, the discovery of themselves through the stories of others. Greer and other authors speak of White's work as more than just an influence, but as a rite of passage: "How a queer man might begin to question all of the deeply held, deeply religious, deeply American assumptions about desire, love, and sex — who is entitled to have it, how it must be had, what it looks like,' says Robert Jones Jr., whose novel above love between two enslaved men, ' The Prophets,' was a National Book Award finalist in 2021. Jones remembers being a teenager in the 1980s when he read 'A Boy's Own Story." He found the book at a store in a gay neighborhood in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, 'the safest place for a person to be openly queer in New York City,' he said. 'It was a scary time for me because all the news stories about queer men revolved around AIDS and dying, and how the disease was the Christian god's vengeance against the 'sin of homosexuality,'' Jones added. 'It was the first time that I had come across any literature that confirmed that queer men have a childhood; that my own desires were not, in fact, some aberration, but were natural; and that any suffering and loneliness I was experiencing wasn't divine retribution, but was the intention of a human-made bigotry that could be, if I had the courage and the community, confronted and perhaps defeated," he said. Starting in the 1970s, White published more than 25 books, including novels, memoirs, plays, biographies and 'The Joy of Gay Sex,' a response to the 1970s bestseller 'The Joy of Sex." He held the rare stature for a living author of having a prize named for him, the Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction, as presented by the Publishing Triangle. 'White was very supportive of young writers, encouraging them to explore and expand new and individual visions,' said Carol Rosenfeld, chair of the Triangle. The award was 'one way of honoring that support.' Winners such the prize was founded, in 2006, have included 'The Prophets,' Myriam Gurba 's 'Dahlia Season' and Joe Okonkwo's 'Jazz Moon.' Earlier this year, the award was given to Jiaming Tang's ' Cinema Love,' a story of gay men in rural China. Tang remembered reading 'A Boy's Own Story' in his early 20s, and said that both the book and White were 'essential touchpoints in my gay coming-of-age.' 'He writes with intimate specificity and humor, and no other writer has captured the electric excitement and crushing loneliness that gay men experience as they come of age,' Tang said. "He's a towering figure. There'd be no gay literature in America without Edmund White.'
