Tom Hanks breaks his silence on his daughter's bombshell memoir detailing her disturbing childhood

Daily Mail04-06-2025
has broken his silence on his daughter's new bombshell memoir detailing her troubled childhood.
The actor, 68, opened up about the book, The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road, written by his only daughter E.A. Hanks, during a red carpet premiere for his new film 'The Phoenician Scheme' on Thursday.
Hanks praised her for being so candid about a dark time in her life and also noted he was not at all shocked that she had the strength to do so.
'I'm not surprised that my daughter had the wherewithal as well as the curiosity... in order to examine this thing that I think she was incredibly honest about,' the Toy Story star told Access Hollywood.
He went on to say that his daughter has been 'very open about what the process is' in regard to the book.
The popular memoir was released in April and examines the 42-year-old writer's life growing up with two Hollywood icons, Hank and her mother, the late actress Samantha Lewes.
E.A. spent the first five years of her life living in Los Angeles with both her mom and dad until they divorced in 1987.
In the book, she recalled how her mother chose to move her older brother Colin, now 47, and her from Los Angeles to Sacramento without warning.
She also revealed how Samantha's 'emotional and physical violence' brought her back to live with her father.
In an excerpt shared with People, she recalled: 'I was born in Burbank, but after my parents split up, my mother took my older brother and me to live in Sacramento. I have few memories of the early years in Los Angeles.
'Eventually a divorce agreement was settled, and I would visit my dad and stepmother (and soon enough my younger half brothers) on the weekends and during summers, but from 5 to 14, years filled with confusion, violence, deprivation, and love, I was a Sacramento girl.
'I lived in a white house with columns, a backyard with a pool, and a bedroom with pictures of horses plastered on every wall.
'As the years went on, the backyard became so full of dog s*** that you couldn't walk around it, the house stank of smoke.
'The fridge was bare or full of expired food more often than not, and my mother spent more and more time in her big four-poster bed, poring over the Bible.'
E.A. then went on to detail the extent of her mother's actions toward her, adding: 'One night, her emotional violence became physical violence, and in the aftermath I moved to Los Angeles, right smack in the middle of the seventh grade.
'My custody arrangement basically switched — now I lived in L.A. and visited Sacramento on the weekends and in the summer.
In the book, she recalled her how her mother chose to move her older brother Colin, now 47, and her from Los Angeles to Sacramento without warning and how Samantha's 'emotional and physical violence' brought her back to live with her father
'When I was 14, my mother and I drove across America along Interstate 10 to Florida, in a Winnebago that lumbered along the asphalt with a rolling gait that felt nautical.'
In the memoir, E.A. shared that she believes her mother, who was never diagnosed, struggled with bipolar disorder with episodes of 'extreme paranoia and delusion.'
'My senior year of high school, she called to say she was dying,' she continued.
Samantha, who was known for her role in the 1984 movie Mr. Success, died in 2002 from bone cancer at age of 50.
In the wake of her passing, E.A. set out on a six-month road trip to try to piece together a portrait of her mother.
Crucial to the mystery was one of her mother's journal entries in which she claimed she saw E.A.'s late grandfather, John Raymond Dillingham, 'rape, murder, and cannibalize a little girl.'
'It wasn't a journal with dates,' she told People, 'but more stream of consciousness, spurts of what would occur to her.'
'And then I read her description of her father committing this horrible crime. The crime she describes is witnessing her father rape, murder and cannibalize a little girl.'
If any of what Samantha was describing was true, E.A. added, her mother 'never stood a chance' - referring to the mental anguish she suffered toward the end of her life.
She wrote that she doesn't have too many memories of her parents - who wed in 1979.
The Forrest Gump actor met his first wife - who was four years his senior - when they were both studying theater at California State University in Sacramento.
They formed a friendship that quickly turned into more, as Tom and Samantha embarked on a whirlwind romance that led to the birth of their first child together - son Colin - out of wedlock in 1977.
Tom, 22 at the time, was struggling to get his acting career off the ground when he, Samantha, and Colin moved into a cockroach-infested apartment in Manhattan in 1978.
Samantha and Tom finally tied the knot the following year and Elizabeth was born in 1982.
By then, their marriage had already begun crumbling as Tom's career was taking off and he began booking acting jobs that kept him away from his wife and children for longer and longer periods of time.
He was still married to Samantha when Rita guest-starred in one episode of Tom's cross-dressing ABC sitcom Bosom Buddies back in 1981.
When they reconnected while filming the 1985 film Volunteers, neither Tom nor Rita could deny their feelings for each other.
'Rita and I just looked at each other and - kaboing - that was that,' the 68-year-old actor said during an appearance on the BBC's Desert Island Discs in 2016. 'I asked Rita if it was the real thing for her, and it just couldn't be denied.'
Hanks legally separated from his first wife in 1985 before their seven-year marriage ended in divorce two years later.
He then married Wilson, 68, in 1988. The couple of 36 years share two children together, Chet, 34, and Truman, 29.

Chris Pratt comes out as an RFK Jr fan as he backs his ‘Make America Healthy Again' campaign

Marvel star Chris Pratt is backing Robert F Kennedy Jr. in his quest to 'Make America Healthy Again' after marrying into his family and spending one-on-one time with him. The A-list actor, who has often sought unity in divided political times, is married to actress Katherine Schwarzenegger, a cousin by marriage to RFK Jr. In an appearance on Club Random, Pratt told Bill Maher - who counts Kennedy as a friend and has had him on both his talk show and his podcast - that there are parts of the 'MAHA' agenda he loves and that he wishes him well in his efforts. 'I hope there are certain things that he oversees that seem to be supported in a bipartisan way, like getting terrible, toxic stuff out of our kids' food. I think that's a great thing. And so, like, just - if you just do that, that's amazing.' He adds that when spending time with Kennedy he's willing to listen and hear him out but while he doesn't always assume everything RFK Jr. is saying is true, he refuses to hate the HHS Secretary. 'I'd hate to be so mired in hatred for the president that any success from his administration is something I'd have an allergic reaction to. To be like, 'Oh, well, if they do it, I don't want it to happen. I'll put Clorox in my children's cereal myself.' 'You know, it's like, come on, be reasonable here. There's certain things that would be a good thing to have. I want them all to be successful,' Pratt said. Maher agreed that Kennedy was a great guy, saying he loves him but has some advice for his work in Washington. 'I love him. I don't agree with everything, but I agree with, like, the overall view that what makes us sick is the toxicity,' Maher said. 'When he was here, I said my advice to you is like you need to marry your former life more with what you're doing now. Your former life, you were very admired as an environmental lawyer.' Despite the outsized caricature of Kennedy as a conspiracy theorist, Maher flatly denies he's out of the ordinary. 'And he's not crazy. I mean the people trying to – he's also got, like I said to him when he was here, 'I don't agree with everything you said, and I don't think your father would either, but your father would be so proud that you stuck to your guns like more than anybody,' he told the actor 'I mean this guy, when this guy believes something you cannot move him off of it with your bribes. That's for better and worse,' Maher added. This wouldn't be the first time the former Parks & Recreation standout Pratt bucked liberal Hollywood. The Marvel star, 45, came under fire for the essay he shared ahead of the presidential election, which saw Donald Trump defeat Democrat Kamala Harris and make a historic return to the White House. Writing for his mother-in-law Maria Shriver's website Sunday Paper, Pratt disappointed fans with his neutrality, claiming he wanted to remind people that whoever the winner of the election is 'we are fellow countrymen'. In his essay, he wrote: 'It's OK to take a moment to lick your wounds when you lose. Heck, go ahead and cry in the mirror. 'But if we become too paralyzed by defeat or too pompous in victory, allegiance to our 'team' can blind us to the fact that we are fellow countrymen.' Multiple users on Reddit slammed Pratt, saying the actor's relatively noncommittal political statement came off as vapid and low-value. It appeared his statement landed just days after his father-in-law, and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said he would vote for Kamala Harris.

Incredible throwback clip shows Kim Kardashian's first EVER talk show appearance where she admits to selling clothes on eBay for money

An incredible throwback clip showing Kim Kardashian 's first ever talk show appearance has been recirculating on social media. The businesswoman and influencer, 44, made her first ever late-night television appearance was on the Late Show with David Letterman in August 2008. During the interview, she discussed selling her clothes on eBay for money and her then-recent foray into reality television. The interview came just a few months after her family show Keeping Up With The Kardashians first aired in 2007, catapulting her and her sisters into stardom. Wearing a stylish red dress she put on a confident display in the clip as she walked onto the Letterman show as the host asked her: 'What do you do for a living? You have a store?' She replied: 'I have a clothing store yes and I was a wardrobe stylist and I have a closet organizing business where I would go into closets and completely reorganise it. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kardashian Clips (@kardashianclips) 'We would take everything out we didn't want and sell it on eBay. I love eBay and I do it all the time. And that's what I did.' 17 years on from that clip Kim has gone on to forge an incredibly successful career and now has a net worth of $1.7 billion as of May 2025. And there were more throwbacks last week as Kim took a trip down memory lane as she shared a never-before-seen photo with her late father Robert Kardashian on Sunday. The reality TV star took to Instagram with the nostalgic image, which featured her as a little girl standing next to the attorney - who died at the age of 59 from esophageal cancer - and her mom Kris Jenner, 69. The image saw Kris with her arms around Robert, both of them smiling at the camera, along with their daughter. 'Dad, Mom and Me,' the SKIMS founder captioned the post. Kris was married to Robert from 1978 until their divorce in 1991. Aside from Kim, they also welcomed daughters Kourtney, 46, and Khloe, 41, as well as son Rob, 38. Kim - who recently tried to purchase a family heirloom connected to her father but was rejected - was 22 years old when her father passed away from in September 2003. In 1998, seven years after his divorce from Kris was finalized, Robert married Jan Ashley; however, the marriage ended in annulment 30 days later. During the interview, she discussed selling her clothes on eBay for money and her then-recent foray into reality television After dating for three years, the Los Angeles native married his third wife, Ellen Pierson (née Markowitz), six weeks prior to his death. Meanwhile Kris married Olympic decathlete Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce), 75, in 1991, shortly after her divorce from Robert was finalized. They had two daughters together, Kendall, 29, and Kylie Jenner, 28. Kim is currently studying to become a lawyer, like her father. In May, she completed her law school program after a six year journey. She still needs to pass the Bar Exam to practice law in the state. In 2020, Kim said she hoped that her father would be 'so proud' to see her pursuing a career in law and says whenever she gets 'frustrated' with studying, she thinks of him. 'He must've been going through some of the same things that I have gone through. It would have been exciting to talk to him about that, and I know that he would be so, so proud,' she said. Kim has been working on prison reform in recent years, and hopes setting up her own law firm will help get former inmates into work. In March, Kim's attempt to purchase a family heirloom connected to her late father was rejected by O.J. Simpson's estate. The estate's executor, Malcom LaVergne, revealed that they, sadly, had to turn down her $15,000 offer on the Bible her dad gifted Simpson, who died on April 10, 2024, because it was 'too late to purchase it outside the auction.'

Mila Kunis says she barely ate to prep for Black Swan

has revealed that while working on Black Swan, she barely ate. The actress, 42, said in an interview with her co-star, Natalie Portman, and director, Darren Aronofsky, she ate very little while filming the 2010 film. She told Vogue: 'My prep was a lot of dancing and very little eating - which I know you're not supposed to say, but it's the truth.' Mila continued: 'I drank a lot of broth and danced for 12 hours a day.' The star said there was only supposed to be three months of prep before filming started, but 'we lost some financing, so that got extended to six months while Darren tried to find money'. She continued: 'It sucked for Darren, but Nat and I were so happy because we had three extra months to dance.' The movie was made on a budget of just $13million, and, once production began, was shot in 42 days. Natalie, 44, revealed: 'We didn't have any rehearsals beyond the dancing. 'One of the most surprising side effects of doing the physical training was that I ended up spending a year talking extensively to my trainer, who was a former New York City Ballet dancer and told me hours of stories that gave so much color and insight into that world. 'It was like doing investigative journalism, but I was just gossiping with her while doing pliés.' Mila added: 'We would shoot those dancing scenes for hours, and I had bruises all over my ribs just from being lifted over and over. 'I also dislocated my shoulder pretty early in the production and thought I was completely screwed, but Darren sent me to an acupuncturist and I somehow came out totally fine.' In the film, Nina [Natalie] become the lead dancer in the upcoming production of Swan Lake after the former prima ballerina was forced to retire. Lily [Mila] is a promising dancer, who offers some competition for Nina as she struggles to hold on to the lead. The women say Darren, 56, tried to create a similar tension between them, even though Natalie had recommended Mila for the job. 'Darren would tell me, "Nat is working really, really hard. She's not even taking Saturdays and Sundays off",' Mila said. 'Then I would text Nat and she'd be like, "No, I'm not?" I think that's how we figured out what Darren was up to, but it was all in good fun.' Darren explained: 'My take is that I was trying to be a sneaky director and make them argue. 'Mila and Natalie both realized very quickly what I was doing and made fun of me, so it quickly became a joke that we all understood. 'They're both very clever and were instantly privy to whatever trick I was playing.' He added his goal was to help the actors get in character. When the cameras weren't rolling, Mila said the director was 'a really kind, lovely guy', detailing how he took them to 'see Twilight one time' because they had the day off. 'Journalists were always so disappointed that he wasn't some tortured soul who treated us like garbage,' she mused. For support in the United States, call the ANAD helpline on 1-888-375-7767.
