Wee Yee Hern-Chan Wen Tse win Thailand International Series 2025 against top seeds
The world number 144 pair and third seeds took 33 minutes to deny the world number 64 pair a chance to taste their glory on home soil in Terminal 21 Korat, 22-20, 21-16.
This is Yee Hern-Wen Tse's second win over the Thais in three matches since they first crossed paths in the Sri Lanka International Challenge 2025 last February.
Yee Hern-Wen Tse are next slated to feature in the Malaysia International Challenge 2025, which will be held in Perak from this Tuesday until Aug 17.
They will take on Australian duo Timotius Elbert-Sarita Suwanakuboriharn. — Bernama

Former national hockey player Arrifin Mohd Ghani is new sports commissioner
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Former national hockey player Arrifin Mohd Ghani has been appointed as the new Sports Commissioner (PJS) effective today, on a two-year contract. The appointment, announced by the Sports Commissioner's Office via its official Facebook page, sees Arrifin succeeding Datuk Suhardi Alias. A national player from 1989 to 1993, Arrifin previously served with the National Sports Council (MSN). He is a law graduate and was recognised as a Sports Alumni Icon by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). He is also the second former national athlete to be appointed to the post, after Datuk Zaiton Othman in 1982. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh congratulated Arrifin on his appointment, expressing confidence in his capabilities. Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun eye stronger run at World Badminton Championships
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — National men's doubles player, Man Wei Chong admitted that he and his partner Tee Kai Wun are in better physical condition to participate in this year's World Badminton Championships which will be held in Paris, France from August 25-31. He said that compared to the inaugural edition he participated in in 2023, he feels they are now more prepared and hope to do better by aiming to bring home a medal for Malaysia. 'If you compare the last two years, this year's performance has improved a bit. Although not much, it is better than the last two years. 'So hopefully we can do our best than before,' he told reporters after the national badminton team's training session at the Badminton Academy Malaysia (ABM) today. Meanwhile, Wei Chong, when asked about his draw with Kai Wun in the tournament, admitted that being placed as the seeded pair gave them a slight advantage when they would not be playing in the first round. However, he said that did not mean they could be complacent given that there were several great names they had to fight if they wanted to go further. 'I think our first round was good because we started in the round of 64 and after that we might face the French pair, Toma Junior Popov-Christo Popov. They are also quite strong and it is not certain that they can win again, playing at home. So we really hope to be able to perform later,' he said. For the record in the 2023 edition, Wei Chong-Kai Wun ended the competition in the third round after losing to the Chinese pair, Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang 21-16, 14-21, 21-17. — Bernama

'If we meet them, we'll whack them'
KUALA LUMPUR: Doubles ace Aaron Chia has cheekily thrown down the gauntlet to world No. 22 Wan Arif Junaidi–Yap Roy King over a possible third-round showdown at the Paris World Championships from Aug 25-31. "Ask them how they'll fare if they meet us in the third round?", interjected a grinning Aaron as he passed by Arif and Roy King who were being interviewed by reporters at the Academy Badminton Malaysia today. Arif, who won the recent Macau Open with Roy King, didn't back down and retorted: "If we meet them, we'll whack them." Aaron's challenge is also a strong indication that both pairs are quietly confident of setting up an all-Malaysia third-round clash in Paris. However, Arif doesn't want to lose focus on the tough first-round clash against Japan's world No. 34 Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura, and a possible second-round meeting with Thailand's world No. 12 Dechapol Puavaranukroh–Kittinupong Kedren. "We have tough opponents in the earlier rounds, so we want to clear those hurdles first before thinking about playing Aaron–Wooi Yik," said Arif. Roy King said: 'It will be good if we can meet Aaron-Wooi Yik in the last 16, as this will confirm at least one Malaysian pair in the quarter-finals. "We have the fire in us to upset higher-ranked pairs at the World Championships." World No. 2 and second-seeded Aaron-Wooi Yik have received a first-round bye and are likely to meet either Scotland's world No. 40 Christopher Grimley-Matthew Grimley or Spain's world No. 89 Daniel Franco-Rodrigo Sanjurjo in the second round.
