Young carers discover love for planes at aviation day

Yahooa day ago
Young carers say they have discovered a new-found interest in planes after taking part in an aviation charity-run scheme.
The group from Gloucestershire Young Carers took part in an aviation career taster day at Gloucestershire Airport last week.
It was facilitated by the airport's charity Fly to Help which offers career taster programmes called Aim High to introduce young people to the world of aviation.
"I wasn't really that interested at first - but I love planes now," said Theo, one of the participants.

Theo added: "Now that I've come here, I've figured out I want to be a plane engineer."
Carers were given an insight into the aviation industry, with tours of the planes and repair areas and a chance to practice air traffic control inside of a simulator.
"We've done a lot [of things] that I normally wouldn't have the chance to do," said Grace.
"My favourite part of the day was probably practicing the air traffic control. I wasn't really interested in planes before now - I thought they were cool - but I feel like the more you know about them, the cooler they get.
"It's actually a really fascinating job," added Elsa.
Gloucestershire Young Carers is a charity which supports young people who take on caring roles for family members in the county.
They provide carers with advice, advocacy, youth support, short breaks and regular activities to give them a break from their caring role.
Rebecca Bryan, keyworker at Gloucestershire Young Carers, said: "I can't thank the airport enough for giving this opportunity to the young carers we support.
"It just goes to show how it can build their confidence, inspire them and unite them as a group. That's what it's about, giving them that break and respite."

Met Office issues bank holiday update as Hurricane Erin continues to impact UK weather

August bank holiday weekend is just around the corner, and with many people making plans with friends, family and loved ones, they might be wondering what the weather is set to be like. The extended weekend is set to be fairly dry - good news for those planning to enjoy their time off outside - with a small chance of showers, according to Met Office forecasts. Due to Hurricane Erin, which is soon to become just a classical weather system, there is "uncertainty" over conditions in the UK, the Met Office explains. READ MORE: Haven responds after reports of asylum seekers being moved into holiday parks during summer breaks READ MORE: UK households warned of rules if neighbour's tree is blocking sunlight in your home or garden In a ten day forecast, Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin explained that although things have felt a little cooler these last few days, high pressure is set to build through the weekend, bringing warmer temperatures. "Throughout the weekend there's always the possibility of some showers coming into the West and they can't be completely ruled out particularly on Monday across the far southwest because we could see things getting a bit complicated by then because of this weather system which is of course what's left of Erin. "It is a hurricane, but as we go through the weekend, it will go through what's called extra tropical transition. So it's no longer a hurricane. It's no longer a tropical storm. It is no longer being fuelled by the sea because it's moved northwards over cooler waters. It is now a classical weather system. "There will still be the threat of one or two showers possibly in the southwest on Monday." A lot of the outcome of the weather depends on the jet stream, which is a high-altitude, fast-flowing air current that circles the globe, and whether it picks up Storm Erin. Alex explained: "By Erin moving northwards it creates that temperature contrast which really generates this first arm of the jet stream. So Erin really initially pushes the jet stream on, but then what happens as it changes it goes from being a hurricane to being a more typical area of low pressure. "What happens now is it draws in that colder air behind it on its back edge and now the temperature contrast is on its southern side which is why the jet stream goes from being active ahead of it to potentially being more active to the south of it and that crossing of the jet stream means that low pressure system, no longer a hurricane, could intensify because of its movements across the jet stream. "But it's kind of a chicken-and-egg thing because it's it's generally also sparking that increase in jet stream because of the way it's drawing down the colder air from further north and then the temperature contrast is more marked to the south of it rather than to the north of it. "So quite a complex interaction going on with what will be ex-hurricane Erin by this stage and when we've got that complex interaction with a highly energetic system, well it does bring some uncertainty to the forecast." The UK-wide Met Office forecast for Saturday to Monday reads: "There will be a chance of the odd light shower during the Bank Holiday weekend. Most areas will remain fine however, with clear or sunny spells. Turning a little warmer." Looking ahead at the period between August 25 and September 3, the long range forecast reads: "The forecast for Bank Holiday Monday is for reasonably fair weather, with light winds and sunny spells continuing from the weekend. "However there is still a small chance that western or southwestern parts could see some cloudier skies and a few showers. As the week goes on, skies may become generally cloudier, and there is an increasing chance of outbreaks of rain and showers. "Any precipitation would be initially across the southwestern half of the UK, and possibly spreading further north and east at times. That being said, fair conditions are still possible between weather systems. Winds could be breezy at times too, especially around exposed coasts and some hills." For this period, temperatures are set to be around normal, perhaps a "little above" normal in some places where sunny spells persist.

Southwest Teasing Major 'Getaways' Announcement August 19

This year, Southwest Airlines has been implementing some major changes, with another one coming August 19. Some of the new initiatives, like ending the "Bags Fly Free" and unassigned seating policies, have not gone over well with customers. Early returns on the shuttering of several direct flights are not positive either. Other programs seem to be faring better, including the airline's new recent partnership with Priceline. This brings us to Getaways by Southwest, which will be fully unveiled on National Aviation Day, which is Tuesday, August 19. The news about the Getaways program isn't fresh; Southwest actually announced it last September. However, all of the details and destinations will be out Tuesday. Southwest has been teasing the launch of Getaways by Southwest on Instagram over the last few days. What is Getaways by Southwest? Getaways by Southwest officially brings Southwest's vacation service in-house. Previously, the operations for Southwest Vacations were outsourced to Apple Leisure Group. Six markets-- Las Vegas, Orlando, Hawaii, Cancun, Punta Cana, and Montego Bay--have already been announced. "Getaways will launch with 30+ markets, including popular locations like Las Vegas, Orlando, Hawaii, Cancun, Punta Cana, and Montego Bay," says the official Southwest website. "Confirmed partnerships include casino-hotel Caesars Entertainment, and all-inclusive brands Playa Hotels & Resorts and Sandos Hotels & Resorts, with more to come." What the service offers Southwest executive vice president of transformation Ryan Green told Travel Weekly last September that Getaways by Southwest will offer a variety of benefits, including the ability to purchase packages using Rapid Rewards points. Each customer will get two free checked bags, the ability to make changes to their flight up to 10 minutes before and the ability to cancel up to 10 minutes before and still receive a travel credit. "It will be very friendly and flexible," Green said. Southwest will also have direct partnerships with hotels and ground transportation, opening the door for more potential customer rewards. Opinion - Where's JD Vance? VP takes eighth vacation in seven months

Vice President JD Vance has been in office since January, and already he's racked up more vacation days than most Americans could dream of in a decade. The man who built his brand railing against 'elites' has basically become one — living like the very people he claimed to stand against. His latest trip? A summer holiday in the Cotswolds, the region of England nicknamed 'the Hamptons of the UK.' Vance rented a sprawling manor that goes for about $10,000 a week. Between his motorcades clogging tiny country roads and the protests that followed him across the pond, it's safe to say his family getaway got more press than privacy. But this isn't an isolated incident. This is vacation No.8 this year. Italy, India, Nantucket, Disneyland, Vermont, Greenland — wherever you can name, he's been. Some of those vacations he even labeled as 'official business,' meaning taxpayers footed the bill. Like in March, when he flew with the second lady to Greenland during the height of Trump's fixation with the territory. The trip was so poorly received by Greenland's government that it was cut it short from a multi-day trip to a three hours' trip. Imagine flying all that way for less time than most people spend at a barbecue. The only thing that came from the trip were some Instagram-ready photos of Vance and his wife in the snow. Then there's Disneyland, which he shut down for his family. Then there's a $2,500 Michelin-starred dinner in San Diego. And who could forget his birthday kayak trip, when the military literally raised the level of an Ohio river just to smooth out his paddling conditions. That's not just elite — that's emperor-level. The bigger question is: how does he have so much time off? Most Americans can't even get two consecutive weeks approved without begging their boss. Yet the sitting vice president has managed to disappear almost every month since taking office. For context, Mike Pence barely took personal trips in his first six months. Kamala Harris didn't take a single personal vacation in hers. Meanwhile, families here at home are being crushed under the weight of rising costs. Groceries, health care, gas — everyday basics are becoming luxuries. And while Americans are forced to 'do more with less,' their vice president seems determined to 'do less with more.' The optics matter. When you're the right-hand man to Donald Trump, the guy who wants to convince working-class America that he's their champion, jet-setting across the globe on lavish retreats doesn't scream solidarity. It screams out-of-touch. So as the bills pile up and medical benefits shrink because of the 'big beautiful bill,' JD Vance may be hard to find. Not in Washington. Not in Ohio. But likely on vacation — again. The message is clear: while everyday Americans are fighting to make ends meet, JD Vance is fighting to make his next reservation.
