Here's a sneak peek at NYC comedian Zach Zimmerman's new special
Brooklyn comedian Zach Zimmerman now has his own answer, and he's unveiling it in a comedy special titled "Surprise Me," which makes its debut on YouTube at 8pm on Tuesday, April 22. In the hour-long show, he digs into a variety of different types of love, from parent-child to romantic to polyamorous—always with a humorous twist. It's free to watch and sure to be hilarious; here's a sneak peek at what to expect.
This special brings together Zimmerman's greatest hits pulled from his eight years of stand-up comedy in NYC, his appearances on late night TV shows and his book Is It Hot in Here (Or Am I Suffering for All Eternity for the Sins I Committed on Earth)? The special also brings in new, never-before-heard material, as well.
"The narrative thrust of it is about my family and trying to figure out a good definition of love," Zimmerman told Time Out New York. "So my mom tells me she loves me unconditionally, but she goes to the ballot box and votes against my rights. My ex said he loved me, but then cheated on me and dumped me on a plane. So I'm trying to figure out, what does love mean? And eventually I come to a conclusion by the end of the special navigating it all, and I won't spoil it. It's a surprise."
The plot includes bell hooks, doughnuts, evangelical Christianity, Grindr and many more surprising twists and turns.
While nearly a decade of stand-up work has gone into this special, Zimmerman said he's been working on it seriously for about a year. He partnered with production company Pretty Good Friends to create the show, and you'll notice the wardrobe and set details by Dos Jefes. When the show debuts at 8pm on April 22, Zimmerman himself will be in the chat live. ("If you don't like it, please don't comment, 'bad' because that will destroy me and my fragile ego," he joked.)
"I want to delight my current fans and find some new ones," Zimmerman said.
In terms of his familial relationships, the 36-year-old queer comedian who grew up in southern Virginia struggles to reckon with his mother who voted for President Donald Trump. In many ways, he said, it's a microcosm of American culture nowadays: "Can you coexist with someone who you fundamentally disagree on so many ways?"

As for romantic love, Zimmerman isn't shy about sharing his heartbreaks on stage.
"I've found people like my suffering and failures and foibles," he says. "I love sharing my horrific dating stories."
Watch "Surprise Me" on YouTube. It debuts on Tuesday, April 22 at 8pm. And catch Zach Zimmerman co-hosting the Pretty Major comedy show with Jay Jurden every other Tuesday at Union Hall in Brooklyn.

ITV viewers gripped by 'mind-blowing' sci-fi series with 'superb acting' - and there are four seasons to sink your teeth into
ITV viewers have been gripped by a 'mind-blowing' sci-fi series with 'superb acting' - and there are four seasons to sink your teeth into. Roswell, New Mexico, based on Melinda Metz's novel Roswell High, first hit screens on US channel The CW back in 2019. The mystery drama, developed by Carina Adly Mackenzie, has aired 52 episodes across four series. IMDb's official synopsis states: 'Centres on a town where aliens with unearthly abilities live undercover among humans. 'But when a violent attack points to a greater alien presence, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose them.' It stars the likes of Jeanine Mason, Nathan Dean, Michael Vlamis, Lily Cowles, Tyler Blackburn and Heather Hemmens. ITV viewers have been gripped by a 'mind-blowing' sci-fi series with 'superb acting' - and there are four seasons to sink your teeth into Roswell, New Mexico , based on Melinda Metz's novel Roswell High, hit our screens on the US channel The CW back in 2019 The mystery drama, developed by Carina Adly Mackenzie, has aired 52 episodes across four series The show wrapped up in 2022, but if this sounds like your kind of programme, it's your lucky day because it has landed on ITVX. Roswell, New Mexico has got 77% on critic site Rotten Tomatoes and 61% on the popcornmeter. Many have taken online to share their positive thoughts about the series, with one saying: 'I put off watching it for years (although an alien buff). I thought Hollywood did Roswell to death, but this show is different. The storyline is well thought-out, and the acting is superb. My hat is off to the creators of this mind-blowing series.' Others have taken to IMDb, with one writing: 'I really enjoyed it. It was the perfect mix of nostalgia and something new. It took a bit to get used to the new cast, but I like them. As far as reboots go, this is a good one. 'No, it's not like the original. But that doesn't mean it's bad. Check it out. It's worth a watch.' 'As a massive fan of the original, I LOVED THIS. The chemistry between the characters is awesome. BIG FAN! Can't wait for more.' 'I really loved this!' 'I loved the show and will tune in each week. I give it 10 stars.' Many have rushed online to share their rare reviews on the show - with one saying 'I really loved this!' Roswell, New Mexico has got 77% on critic site Rotten Tomatoes and 61% on the popcornmeter 'LOVE THIS SHOW!!!' There is another TV show called Roswell which was on air between 1999 and 2002. 'The lives of three young alien/human hybrids with extraordinary gifts in Roswell,' IMDb's synopsis reads. Although it was a huge hit, it doesn't sound like it will be returning any time soon. Roswell, Mexico was cancelled in 2022, and that meant that the writers had to edit their scripts to make it an ending that fans would be happy with. Showrunner Chris Hollier told EW: 'This [finale] was intended to help launch us to a nice wrap-up of season five. 'More craziness would've followed.' He added: 'What does it mean when you start to find the people that you want to be with? How do you actually go and generate your own happy ever after? 'I loved where we were going to take those characters. 'We were talking about setting the ending multiple years in the future. It would've been another wrap-up with where all of our couples were.' However he did have plans to make another. He told Variety: 'I loosely had to pitch [the network] and had to get them to sign off on letting me [have Max] go away. And they're like, 'Well, when does he come back?' was the next question. 'They're our first audience. So yes, there was a plan actually, of how to round it out assuming that the fifth season would be our last. We had some time jumps built in to actually tell stories we've collapsed down into weeks. 'We wanted to actually stretch out and jump to three different times over the next couple of years for all of our characters. 'I'm very fortunate for the time we had, but you always feel like we had one more bullet in the chamber.' Watch Roswell, New Mexico, on ITVX.

We charged guests £700 to attend our wedding — even strangers could come
When Steve proposed to Marley on January 1, 2025, on an ice rink in Boise, Idaho, surrounded by their family and friends, the pair got straight to planning their special day. But, after discovering the cost of weddings, an average of $35,000 in the US and £23,700 in the UK, the couple made the unconventional decision to charge guests to attend their nuptials. The idea initially began as a joke, but they warmed up to the idea when they realised they'd be able to have the party they wanted. In fact, the tickets were publicly available online and the bride announced on TikTok that anyone could pay to attend if they wished – even strangers. Marley Jaxx, 34, and her husband Steve Larsen, 37, gave guests the option of paying £42 each to attend the actual wedding day, or £735 for a three-day experience. This included the wedding, a charity rehearsal dinner and a biohacking day which involved health experts, electrolyte and red light treatments, and breath work – followed by a recovery lounge. 'We decided to charge because we started making a big list of everyone who we wanted to come, we were paying per head, and wanted a big party but the cost kept getting higher and higher,' Steve, an entrepreneur from Boise, explains. 'We said instead of people getting us a gift, or donating to a honeymoon fund – pay for your meal, and you can come party with us. For us, it was all about doing a different way of doing things, and changing how people think about weddings.' And be sure to follow and subscribe so you never miss an episode. You can also join the fun on our WhatsApp Group Chat here – share your dilemmas and Diana and Alice may just give you a call. Marley, also an entrepreneur, says that their decision to charge people to celebrate was met with some raised eyebrows. @marleyjaxx I thought we all knew the deal by now, but just in case… Yes. You can come to the wedding. No, you don't need a secret password. Unless you count CRASHTHEPARTY as a password… in which case, say less. I was on a client call yesterday and someone asked: 'Wait… can I ACTUALLY buy a ticket to your wedding??' BABY. That is why I've been making these videos every day like a wedding-obsessed Willy Wonka with Canva access. YES, YOU CAN COME. YES, YOU ARE INVITED. YES, THIS IS REAL LIFE. 🎟️ It's $57 📅 Please RSVP before July… if you wait till after, sure, you might still get in… but you could be standing in a corner eating ice cubes while everyone else has dinner. No promises. There will be cake. Emotions. Possibly holograms. A portion of every ticket helps build a classroom in Kenya with Village Impact Drop 'CRASHTHEPARTY' below and I'll send you the invitation. Bring a friend. Or five. We'll save you a seat (unless you wait too long, in which case you might be eating air). ♬ original sound – Marley Jaxx 'Most people got it. Of course there were people who did a double take and were like 'wait, what?',' she adds. 'One friend of mine didn't like it, and he didn't hold back either. We debated it, and in the end, he said he understood. Other responses we had were from people saying that if we can't afford a big wedding, then don't do it. 'It was never about what we could afford.' Despite initial hesitations, 300 guests attended, covering the £36,894 cost of the shindig, which took place on August 1. The celebrations featured brass players, an outside ceremony, a three tier cake and fire displays. 'The people who were at the wedding wanted to be there,' Marley says. 'Guests were commenting on how peaceful it was. It changed the feeling of the wedding. 'I thought it would be stressful, but it was peaceful. One of the guests said when people get a wedding invitation, there is an obligation to go. 'But when you choose to pay, it is a different feeling – it shows how much they appreciate you.' The newlyweds also managed to raise £97,807 to be donated to the charity Village Impact, which provides community-led education, leadership, and economic opportunities in Kenya. The couple say the opportunities for guests to donate were through bracelets made by kids in Kenya, a silent auction with art from Ugandan artists, and even a few guests committing to join them on their trip to Africa to build the school in July 2026. Marley and Steve says they're 'thrilled' with how the wedding went. More Trending Despite the backlash on social media, Marley said they were 'frugal' for their wedding. Marley said: 'I hope that any bride can say that there was nothing they wanted to change about their wedding day. We had family who travelled from all over, our three daughters did public speaking, which we were super proud of. View More » 'Everyone was dancing, we had such a great time.'
