Novak Djokovic recovers from his worst first set at Wimbledon to reach quarters

The Serbian has not fallen before the final at the All England Club since 2017 but he will need to raise his level if he is to maintain that record after scrapping to a 1-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory over Alex De Minaur in three hours and 19 minutes.
Djokovic cannot have played many worse sets at Wimbledon than the opening one here, with the Serbian making 16 unforced errors, including four double faults and dropping serve three times.
"It's probably the first time he's watched me and I won the match."

It is the sixth time Djokovic has lost a set 6-1 at the All England Club but the first time he has done so in the first set.
Watching from the Royal Box was the 38-year-old's long-time rival Federer, and Djokovic said at the end with a smile: 'Sometimes I wish I had the serve and volley and nice touch from the gentleman that is standing right there. That would help.
'This is probably the first time he is watching me and I have won the match. The last couple of times I lost, so it's good to break the curse.
'Obviously he's one of the greatest legends of our game in the history of tennis. So it always is extra special when he's in the stands.'

Djokovic set about flipping the script at the start of the second set, breaking the De Minaur serve only for the Australian to hit back after an exhausting game lasting nearly 19 minutes.
Ahead went Djokovic again, the Serbian putting his finger to his ear and whipping up the crowd after a 34-shot rally, and back came De Minaur, but the seven-time champion managed to hold on to his final break, resisting more pressure from the Australian.
De Minaur was devastated to have to pull out of a quarter-final against Djokovic 12 months ago after hurting his hip, and he continued to cause problems for his opponent, opening up a 4-1 lead in the fourth set.
But a chance to lead 5-1, and very likely force a decider, went begging and Djokovic reacted in ruthless fashion with five games in a row.
Djokovic blamed nerves and a swirling wind for his poor start, saying: 'It was very challenging for me. I was not feeling good, not finding the right timing. He was obviously feeling that.
'Honestly big, big relief to finish the match in four sets. Credit to him for making me feel very uncomfortable on the court. Just fortunate to get through this one.'
Next up, Djokovic finds an unexpected quarter-finalist facing him in the shape of 22nd seed Flavio Cobolli – although he is not even the first person in his family to take on the Italian this fortnight.
Djokovic revealed his 10-year-old son Stefan has hit with Cobolli on the practice courts, and the sixth seed joked: 'Of course, I'll have a conversation with my son and see what he has noticed in the game of Cobolli the other day.
'He (Cobolli) is a big fighter. We get along well. We practise whenever we can. We just had a hug. I definitely need to work on my game and start the match better than I did today.'
De Minaur, who was cheered on by fiancee Katie Boulter, is still looking for his big grand slam breakthrough, and he said: 'In the bigger moments today I think my level dipped, and I didn't rise up to the occasion as I needed to if I wanted to beat someone as good as him.'
Cobolli dropped his first set of the tournament but saw off former finalist Marin Cilic 6-4 6-4 6-7 (4) 7-6 (3) to reach his first slam quarter-final.
Cilic complained afterwards about being scheduled first on court, saying: 'I feel bitter because why is there a need to play at 11am?'
American Ben Shelton, meanwhile, had the familiar feeling of beating Italian Lorenzo Sonego having now done so at three grand slams in a row.
They are the first pair to meet in singles at the opening three majors in a year since Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe back in 1984, with Shelton triumphing 3-6 6-1 7-6 (1) 7-5.

Viktor Gyokeres speaks out as Mikel Arteta closes in on more Arsenal signings

Arsenal have been busy in this transfer window after adding three new players - with another one on his way in Noni Madueke - but Mikel Arteta is still waiting to bring in a new striker that he desperately needs Arsenal fans are anxiously waiting for more news on transfer targets after seeing the club do a number of deals - without delivering on the striker they crave so desperately. Mikel Arteta has snapped up three signings so far in this window - goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard. ‌ Meanwhile, Chelsea winger Noni Madueke is on his way ahead of completing a medical over his £52million deal. ‌ But some Arsenal fans aren't happy with the business that's been done so far after a petition was launched against Madueke's signing, while there is frustration over the failure to get Viktor Gyokeres' signature over the line. Here, Mirror Football has rounded up the biggest Arsenal transfer news and gossip. Gyokeres speaks out Arsenal remain at a stalemate with Sporting Lisbon over Gyokeres and it's the transfer saga that seems like it will go on and on until deadline day. ‌ The Gunners will certainly be hoping to avoid that despite Sporting declaring a "cooling off period" in talks, having failed to reach a breakthrough. Arsenal have proposed a package of €65m (£56m) plus future payments of €5m and €10m (£8.6m) in add-ons, but a €5m (£4.3m) gap remains between the two clubs. ‌ Gyokeres is said to be furious with Sporting over their stubbornness and wants the situation resolves as soon as possible - with the player reportedly going on strike ahead of his expected return to pre-season training. He has now given an interview to French outlet L'Equipe discussing his future - as he admitted he would love to play in the Premier League after failing to cut the grade while turning out for Brighton at the start of his career. 'It's one of the biggest leagues in Europe. I spent several years there without being able to play a single match. So, of course, it's something I'd like to do. It would be great revenge!' ‌ When asked if he could quit Sporting, he replied: "Maybe. That's football, you never know. I don't think about it; we'll see what happens. If something happens, it will. The most important thing for me is to play for a club that really wants me." Maresca teases imminent Madueke announcement Arsenal fans know that one signing is just around the corner - even if many might not be too enthusiastic about it. Madueke is set to bolster Arsenal's numbers on the wing following the end of Raheem Sterling's loan spell and he will give Arteta further options alongside Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, Ethan Nwaneri and Gabriel Martinelli. ‌ He will become the club's fourth signing of the summer and Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has now spoken out about the deal happening for the first time, teasing Madueke was just "hours" away from becoming an Arsenal player. "Noni is in contact with a new club," the Italian said. "I guess that he's going to leave in the next hours. I said in one of the last press conferences that at the end, if players want to leave, at the end, it's difficult for the club and for the manager. Noni decided to leave, nobody told Noni he had to leave. If he is happy, we are happy." ‌ Gunners snap up son of ex-Champions League winner from Chelsea There's quite a bit of transfer business between Arsenal and Chelsea these days. Here is another Gunners deal for an ex-Blues star, but it's not a direct deal between the clubs. Arsenal have snapped up 17-year-old left-back Marcell Washington following a trial with the club last season. He last played for Chelsea and is actually the son of Ryan Bertrand, who won the Champions League with the Blues in 2012. Washington has now signed a professional deal with the Gunners after impressing across eight matches featuring for the Under-21s in the 2024-25 campaign. ‌ The teenager revealed how his father had been instrumental in guiding him through his career so far and said he was eager for him to become a "better version of him". 'I think it's been such an honour to have him take me through clips and walk me through games that I've played,' he said. He's really passionate about making me a better player and probably a better version of him. We might have a bit of an argument about it but you get it out of him "I think [Arsenal] is a really big club, obviously. The club are always striving to win trophies. I'm just looking to be an addition to that and see what I can offer the club."

Hearts boss Derek McInnes reveals transfer latest as two more signings expected at Tynecastle next week

DEREK MCINNES savoured victory on his Tynecastle bow and confirmed he expects two more new faces in next week. Burkina Faso frontman Pierre Landry Kabore, 24, has been lined up from Estonian outfit JK Narva Trans while Albanian winger Sabah Kerjota, 23, has agreed to join from Italian lower league team US Sambenedettese. 4 12.07.2025 Hearts v Dunfermline Athletic, Premier Sports Cup Group E ………………………. Derek McInnes Credit: Kenny Ramsay 4 Pierre Landry Kabore was at Tynecastle on Saturday Credit: Kenny Ramsay 4 Sabah Kerjota on the verge of joining Hearts Credit: Kenny Ramsay New Jambos boss McInnes, six signings already, confirmed: 'Whether we can get the visas and stuff through for the games, I'm not sure. 'But we're quite far down the line with a couple. 'I think we're confident we'll get them done.' Lawrence Shankland netted two penalties with Jamie Wilson and sub Stephen Kingsley also on the mark. McInnes added: 'You've seen some of the results today with some of the Premier League teams. It's not straightforward. 'I think for us, we asked for a strong start, which we got. 'Then the one real opportunity Dunfermline had, they score from it. It set us back, it set the crowd back. 'At half time we settled the boys down a bit. 'It was on us to do more. 'I didn't think we were going to lose the game, but I wasn't convinced we were going to win it. Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes gives the inside story of his management career in part 1 of exclusive interview 'The result flattered us, it was harsh on Dunfermline. 'It's clear we've still got work to do." On kid Wilson's goal and potential, McInnes said: 'He excites me. He's very intelligent for someone so young. 'He's only going to get better. 'He needs to learn how to use his body better, but he's still a lot stronger and more robust than I thought he was. He's had as good a pre-season as anybody.' 4 Dunfermline boss Neil Lennon Credit: Alamy Meanwhile, Pars boss Neil Lennon took positives from the defeat but also highlighted the margin of defeat was also self inflicted. Lennon - who blooded John Tod, 18, son of former Pars hero Andrew - said: 'When you make individual mistakes, then no, it's not a harsh result. 'I didn't think we started the game well at all. We looked a little bit spooked and conceded early. 'Then we grew into the game. 'Individual errors cost us. I don't know if it's lack of experience or fatigue. 'But the game was in the balance for long, long periods. 'You can just see that we need a little bit of strength in depth. 'But, yes, there's a lot of positive signs there for me today. 'I'm really pleased overall. I don't like losing, obviously, and I don't like losing heavily. 'But it's two penalties and a set play. The fourth goal is academic. 'I hope the fans can see a glimpse of what we're trying to bring. "I need to add to the squad in important areas and that's what we're intending to do. 'In another two or three weeks' time, we'll be better. 'And I think we'll be an exciting prospect for the Championship. 'I enjoyed being back at Tynecastle - the atmosphere and the occasion was immaculate.' Aberdeen summer signing performances assessed as Jimmy Thelin's new look side edge past Cove Rangers 2-0

Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin handed debuts to five of his six summer transfer window signings in a 2-0 friendly win against Cove Rangers. For the Dons supporters in the sell-out 3,200 crowd, a record attendance at the Balmoral Stadium, it was the first chance to see the new additions in action. Thelin handed debuts to winger Nicolas Milanovic, striker Kusini Yengi, midfielders Adil Aouchiche, Kjartan Már Kjartansson and keeper Nick Suman. Summer signing Emmanuel Gyamfi, signed from German Bundesliga 2 side Schalke, was not in the squad due to injury. Ante Palaversa and Nicky Devlin netted either side of half-time against a Cove Rangers side who were brave in possession and created chances. This was Aberdeen's first game since the Scottish Cup final triumph against Celtic in May, and of the new additions Milanovic and Kjartansson were the stand-outs. Thelin is closing in on more additions to strengthen for a campaign with guaranteed European league action. Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin handed starts to Yengi and Milanovic. Milanovic, 23, operated on the right wing in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Yengi, 26, leading the attack ahead of teen Fletcher Boyd who was central in the midfield three. Australian Milanovic delivered an impressive debut performance, but should have scored, before being one of eight substitutions at half-time. Milanovic arrived at Pittodrie this summer on a high having been awarded the prestigious A-League Player of the Year award, and looks fired up to keep up that momentum. Signed for a fee of around £400,000 from Western Sydney Wanderers the winger also secured a debut call-up to the Australian national squad in May. After only 45 minutes of a friendly against a League One side it is very early days, but Milanovic could be a bargain buy at £400,000. He looked sharp in possession and was denied a quick-fire debut goal in the 17th minute when racing onto an Alexander Jensen through-ball. The winger read the situation well to burst onto the pass before unleashing a powerful low drive from 10 yards. To Milanovic's frustration the shot was blocked at the near post by keeper Robbie Mutch. Milanovic looked particularly dangerous when cutting inside onto his left, and in the 28th minute fired a 20 yard effort wide of the far-post. The woodwork denied the summer signing when he raced onto a low drive across goal from Yengi. His shot from close range cracked off the woodwork and went over. He should have scored. Milanovic looked a threat when dribbling wide and again cut inside and shot from distance, in the 40th minute, but his 25 yard drive went wide. The winger also impressed defensively and tracked back on a number of occasions to win possession. Fellow Australian Yengi was also substituted off at half-time after a solid debut. Former Portsmouth striker Yengi was signed to bolster an attack now minus loan stars Kevin Nisbet (Millwall) and Oday Dabbagh (Charleroi) who returned to their parent club. The 11-times capped international striker came close to an assist when his perfectly timed curved run sprung the defence to latch onto a Boyd through-ball. Yengi had the option to shoot from an acute tight angle with only the keeper to beat but showed impressive awareness to pick out the run of Milanovic. He rolled a pass to the onrushing Milanovic who hit the bar. Aberdeen boss Thelin introduced three further summer signings at half-time for debuts – midfielders Aouchiche, Kjartansson and Suman. French attacking midfielder Aouchiche was secured on a season-long loan from Sunderland and displayed his range of passing against Cove. Aberdeen have an option to buy the 22-year-old former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, next summer, understood to be for a club record fee of £1.5million. Auchiche played in the centre of a midfield three. Midway through the second half he collected the ball under pressure on the left, retained possession then calmly looked up to assess the flow of the game. Aouchiche then pinged a superb cross-field pass directly into the path of Jensen racing down the right-flank. It was a glimpse of the midfielder' composure and game vision. In the 80th minute the French winger slid a through-ball to the onrushing Vicente Besuijen that ripped open the Cove defence. However Besuijen was judged to be marginally offside. Aouchiche played a role in second goal when he instigated the attack with a perfectly judged pass to Gueye who rolled to Devlin to score. Iceland midfielder Kjartansson was secured on a four-year deal from Stjarnan for an undisclosed fee and brings a real physical presence to Aberdeen. He is powerful and aggressive in the challenge but physicality is only a fraction of his game. The Icelandic international reads the game extremely well to intercept passes, is composed and plays with a maturity beyond his years. A No.6 holding midfielder he will be viewed as the long-term replacement for veterans Sivert-Heltne Nilsen and Graeme Shinnie. For keeper Suman it was a rapid return to the Balmoral Stadium having played for Cove Rangers last season. Australian Suman was vocal, commanded his box and delivered a confident performance. He marked his Aberdeen debut with a clean sheet. Aberdeen created the first chance via a Milanovic shot then in the 20th minute Cove had a rasping 20 yard drive from a trialist saved by keeper Dimitar Mitov. The opener came in the 23rd minute when captain Graeme Shinnie, operating at left-back, squared a low pass to Ante Palaversa. Midfielder fired a low 20-yard left-footed drive beyond keeper Mutch. The woodwork denied the Dons a second when Milanovic cracked the crossbar with a close range shot in the 35th minute. On the stroke of half-time Mitov saved from Fraser Fyvie with the loose ball falling to David Eguaibor who kneed an effort from six yards. Mats Knoester cleared the effort off the line. In the 55th minute a curling effort from Pape Gueye was tipped over the bar by Cove keeper Balint Demus. Cove threatened in the 75th minute when Eguaibor fired wide from 20 yards. Aberdeen made it 2-0 with the last kick of the game when Nicky collected a pass from Gueye before firing home. : Mitov (Suman 46); Jensen, Milne (Molloy 46), Knoester, Shinnie (Devlin 46); Palaversa (Kjartansson 46), Clarkson (To 80); Milanovic (Morris 46), Boyd (Auchiche 46), Keskinen (Besuijen 46); Yengi (Gueye 46) : Mutch (Demus 46); Bisland, Trialist, Parker, Darge; Glass (Donaldson 79), Megginson (McGrath 63), Fyvie (Milnes 79) , Strachan; Equaibor, Trialist (Ochmanski 63) Referee: Greg Soutar Man-of-the-Match: Nicolas Milanovic (Aberdeen) Attendance: 3,200
