Delhi to get facelift as CM announces special cleanliness drive

The Hindu5 days ago
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched a city-wide cleanliness drive on Tuesday, which will be conducted from August 1 to 31.
The campaign, titled 'Delhi's Freedom from Garbage Cleanliness Drive', will bring together multiple agencies and citizens under a common motive – to make the Capital cleaner, greener and garbage-free.
'We are writing a golden chapter in Delhi's history. For the first time, agencies such as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Public Works Department, Delhi Police, and others will work together in full coordination. Every citizen must take ownership under the campaign,' Ms. Gupta said, adding that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has been allocated ₹5 crore for this campaign.
To encourage community participation, she announced cash rewards of ₹25 lakh for the best-performing Resident Welfare Association, ₹15 lakh and ₹10 lakh for the second and third positions respectively.
The CM also said that the first two days of the drive will focus on clearing backlogs in schools, hospitals, and offices. During Saturdays and Sundays, efforts will be made to clean up unauthorised colonies and slum clusters. Special drives are planned at the Yamuna ghats on August 14, 21, and 28, while the drive will be conducted at the Ring Road on August 29 and 31.
Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood asserted that cleanliness must not be limited to VIP zones, and the 'real soul' of Delhi resides in slum clusters and unauthorised colonies.
'For decades, these areas were deprived of cleanliness and dignity as if it were a privilege of the rich. This drive will change that narrative,' he said.

Delhi Chief Minister On Air Quality Dipping To 74 For The First Time In A Decade

New Delhi: Citing the latest Air Quality Index of 74, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to reduce the city's pollution, and claimed that for the first time in a decade, the index has come down to such a satisfactory level. Inaugurating a "Jan Seva Kendra" in the Greater Kailash Assembly constituency, the Chief Minister said, "Apart from cleaning the air, we are also committed to cleaning the Yamuna and ending the mountains of garbage." She said her government, after taking note of the public concerns over the proposed ban on end-of-life (EOL) vehicles, approached the court and got a stay on the ban till November 1. "Going forward, bringing the public's voice to every platform, addressing their needs and demands, is our responsibility. As this is not the same government that only made hollow promises. Today's government is genuinely working to reduce Delhi's pollution," she said. CM Gupta said she aspires to make the city so beautiful and habitable that people are not forced to shift out of here. Calling her government's decision to allow commercial establishments to operate 24x7 historic, the CM said, "The licensing process is also going to be simplified and replaced with a single-window system." The CM slammed the earlier AAP government and legislators, saying, "Earlier, MLAs remained confined to their offices and homes. But each MLA of the BJP is now working tirelessly for the public." At an earlier event, she said the government is aiming to ensure that the bed per 1,000 patient ratio should improve to 5 from the current level of around 2.7. CM Gupta also announced her government's plans to introduce a PPP model for purchasing medical equipment in hospitals and complete the development of the 24 hospitals whose construction was suspended midway by the previous government. Later, taking to the social media platform X, the CM said, "Today, the Jan Seva Kendra was inaugurated in the Greater Kailash Assembly constituency and dedicated to public service." "This centre will serve as an effective medium for resolving the problems of the common people, providing information about the schemes of the Central and State Governments, and delivering prompt assistance to those in need, in line with the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to service and good governance," she wrote. "The BJP's double-engine government is committed to ensuring that development, service, and rights reach the last person in line in a time-bound manner," she wrote.

Mamata slams Delhi police for calling Bengali a Bangladeshi language

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday accused the Delhi Police of describing Bengali as a "Bangladeshi language", calling it scandalous, anti-national and unconstitutional. Sharing a letter by Delhi Police on X, Banerjee said, "See now how Delhi police under the direct control of the Ministry of Home, Government of India, is describing Bengali as 'Bangladeshi' language! Bengali, our mother tongue, the language of Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda, the language in which our National Anthem and the National Song (the latter by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay) are written, the language in which crores of Indians speak and write, the language which is sanctified and recognised by the Constitution of India, is now described as a Bangladeshi language!!" She called the act 'scandalous' and urged everyone to strongly protest against the government for disrespecting Bengali-speaking people. "Scandalous, insulting, anti-national, unconstitutional!! This insults all Bengali-speaking people of India. They cannot use this kind of language which degrades and debases us all. We urge immediate strongest possible protests from all against the anti-Bengali Government of India who are using such anti-Constitutional language to insult and humiliate the Bengali-speaking people of India," the post reads. On July 28, Banerjee said she is not against any language or community and supports unity in diversity. Addressing the Bhasha Andolan in Birbhum, Mamata Banerjee said, "I am not against any language or divisive policy. We want unity in diversity. Have I told Hindi-speaking people to leave Bengal? I never said that. You are also my are 1.5 crore migrant workers in Bengal, and 22 lakh people from Bengal work in other states. You should stop your oppression." A row over the Bengali language surfaced after Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress raised the issue during the 'Shahid Dibas' (Martyrs' Day) celebrations on July 21.

Leaders like Trump will get befitting reply when India rises: Delhi CM

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday said the leaders like US President Donald Trump will get a befitting reply when India becomes the world's third-largest economy. The chief minister asserted the nation is no longer dependent on the United States for exports and global recognition. "The whole world is standing with open arms to do business with India. People like Trump will get a befitting reply when we develop and rise," said Gupta addressing the silver jubilee celebration of the Patparganj CPE Study Circle. "If we all work together then it will not take time to become the third-largest largest economy from fourth number. Our exports are not dependent on America," she added. Underlining the importance of self-reliance, Gupta said, "We must become self-dependent so that whatever we consume benefits our own people." The chief minister also highlighted the role of chartered accountants (CAs) and called them the government's "army". "All the 30,000 CAs in Delhi are my army who encourage everyone to pay their taxes faithfully. Whenever there's a GST raid, the first call goes to a CA. They help ensure tax compliance," she said. Gupta announced plans to launch a new scheme to allow citizens to settle old tax dues without hassle. It would be a one-time opportunity, she said, adding that chartered accountants would play a pivotal role in its execution. "We are working towards making the tax-paying system completely faceless. People shouldn't fear the government. We are eliminating the need for multiple licenses and simplifying systems," she said. The chief minister said the public trust in chartered accountants is similar to that in doctors. "No government campaign can be as effective as a CA's word. People trust their CA and do what they say," she added. Gupta also stressed the need to end under the table transactions and build a governance model that encourages honesty and transparency.
