Colombia Names First Ambassador to Palestinian Territories
Colombia has appointed its first-ever ambassador to the Palestinian territories, marking a significant diplomatic step nearly a year after cutting ties with Israel.
Jorge Iván Ospina, a prominent political figure and former mayor, was officially named as Colombia's ambassador to Palestine on Monday, the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a statement carried by national news agency ANCOL.
The appointment underscores the Petro administration's firm stance on Middle East policy. President Gustavo Petro, Colombia's first leftist leader, had severed diplomatic relations with Israel in May 2024, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government of committing 'genocide' in Gaza during the ongoing conflict.
Speaking after his appointment, Ambassador Ospina stressed the urgency of international attention on humanitarian issues in the Palestinian territories. 'The world cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering of civilians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank,' he said. 'No one should die from hunger or lack of medical care. Rehabilitation and global solidarity are urgently needed.'
Colombia's diplomatic move is likely to deepen its engagement in regional and humanitarian efforts while strengthening bilateral ties with the Palestinian Authority. The announcement also signals a broader shift in Latin American foreign policy, with several regional governments increasingly voicing criticism of Israeli military actions and advocating for Palestinian rights on the global stage.

Israeli forces block journalists from Palestinian Oscar winner's village
Israeli forces yesterday blocked an international media tour in the occupied West Bank, preventing journalists from entering the village of Oscar-winning Palestinian director Basel Adra who decried worsening Israeli violence. Adra's film "No Other Land" chronicles the forced displacement of Palestinians by Israeli troops and settlers in Masafer Yatta, an area in the southern West Bank that Israel declared a restricted military zone in the 1980s. Journalists from AFP and other international media travelled to Tuwani at the invitation of Adra, who lives in the village, and co-director Yuval Abraham, seeking to draw attention to a spate of house demolitions and violent incidents in recent weeks. At the entrance to Tuwani, the journalists as well as a Palestinian Authority delegation were blocked by Israeli forces, who said they had a warrant to set up a one-day checkpoint. Abraham called the roadblock a "good example" of what he said was Israeli authorities' involvement in attacks against Palestinians in Masafer Yatta. Adra said the violence was "getting worse and worse". "Settler violence increased, the demolitions carried out by Israeli soldiers and authorities against our homes and schools and properties is increasing in very crazy and high numbers," he told AFP. An Israeli officer who refused to give his name told AFP the force was at the entrance to Tuwani to "keep the public order". "There were violent clashes between settlers, Jews, Arabs, journalists, and to prevent these violent clashes, we decided not to allow passage today," the officer said. Adra said that last week, settlers had entered the nearby Palestinian hamlet of Khallet al-Dabaa, which was bulldozed by the Israeli army in early May, with the Israelis harassing the residents who remained despite the destruction. To Abraham, blocking the media tour was a "good example of the relationship between settler violence and the state". "These police officers and soldiers that are here now to prevent the international media, not only do they not come to prevent the settler violence, often they partake in it," the Israeli co-director told AFP.

Trump Will Allow Iran To Enrich Uranium
A fresh nuclear deal submitted to Iran from the Trump administration over the weekend would allow limited low-level uranium enrichment on Iranian soil for a to-be-determined period of time, Axios writes in a breaking report Monday. This contradicts the prior public statements of Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who have several times made clear that the full dismantlement of Iran's nuclear facilities is a Washington red line. Israel will be vexed — zerohedge (@zerohedge) June 2, 2025 Tehran, for its part has remained firm on its own red line, saying its ability to enrich uranium for peaceful domestic energy purposes is a matter of national sovereignty. Is Trump meeting Iran in the middle? Rather, the hawks will of course accuse him of caving. According to more from Axios: But the proposal described to Axios by two sources with direct knowledge — one of whom provided a point-by-point breakdown — would seem to offer a clearer path to a deal . By making this offer, the Trump administration is risking backlash from its allies on the Hill and in Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government and dozens of Republican senators have pushed the administration to maintain red lines on zero nuclear enrichment and the full dismantlement of Iran's nuclear program. Israel and its supporters in the US are going to be furious. But Trump has promised time and again peace and stability in the region through the art of the deal – a message conveyed especially strongly in his Gulf tour last month. Oil prices dropped immediately on the headline… As for Iran's stance, we detailed earlier in the day that amid ongoing nuclear negotiations, Iran has demanded that the United States clarify precisely how sanctions will be lifted and which ones. A statement said that any new agreement on Tehran's nuclear program would be conditioned on significant and immediate sanctions relief. Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Esmail Baghaei made clear Monday that Tehran won't back off of this reasonable demand, coming days after the US submitted what it called an 'acceptable' proposal. Baghaei stressed the need for transparent and firm guarantees regarding the 'real end of the sanctions' which would also feature details on 'how and through what mechanism' they would be dismantled. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said in a statement. 'Special Envoy Witkoff has sent a detailed and acceptable proposal to the Iranian regime, and it's in their best interest to accept it.'
