PM Modi to visit Canada for G7 summit, also visit Cyprus, Croatia
New Delhi, June 14 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Canada on June 16-17 to participate in the G-7 Summit. He is also visiting Cyprus and Croatia.
PM Modi's visit to Canada is at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. He will travel to Kananaskis in Canada on June 16-17 to participate in the G-7 Summit.
This will be Prime Minister Modi's 6th consecutive participation in the G-7 Summit. At the Summit, Prime Minister will exchange views with leaders of G-7 countries, other invited outreach countries and Heads of International Organisations on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues. Prime Minister will also hold several bilateral meetings on the side-lines of the Summit, a statement said.
Prior to his visit to Canada, Prime Minister Modi will be visiting Cyprus from June 15-16, at the invitation of the President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides. This will be the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades.
While in Nicosia, Prime Minister Modi will hold talks with President Christodoulides and address business leaders in Limassol. The visit will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union, a statement said.
In the final leg of his tour, PM Modi will visit Croatia on June 18, at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Croatia Andrej Plenković.
This will be the first ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia, marking an important milestone in the bilateral relationship. Prime Minister Modi will hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Plenković and meet the President of Croatia, Zoran Milanović.
The visit to Croatia will also underscore India's commitment to further strengthening its engagement with partners in the European Union.

India maintains nuclear edge over Pakistan with more warheads, next-gen 'canisterised' MIRV-capable missiles: SIPRI
India continues to maintain an edge over Pakistan in nuclear capabilities, with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) noting that New Delhi has not only expanded its nuclear arsenal from 172 warheads in 2024 to an estimated 180 in 2025, but also made significant progress in developing advanced nuclear delivery systems. India's new 'canisterized' missiles, which can be transported with mated warheads, may be capable of carrying nuclear warheads during peacetime, and possibly even multiple warheads on each missile, once they become operational," the SIPRI report the newest of India's next-generation delivery platforms are the Agni Prime (Agni-P) missile and the Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV)-capable Agni-5 system. According to India's Ministry of Defence, Agni-P is a new-generation, advanced variant of the Agni series of missiles. It is a canisterised missile with a range of between 1,000 and 2,000 kilometres. The latest test of the Agni-P was conducted last also successfully tested the MIRV-capable Agni-5 last year. This missile is capable of striking targets at ranges exceeding 5,000 kilometres. Following the test, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had lauded the efforts of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientists involved in the mission. In a post on X, he wrote: "Proud of our DRDO scientists for Mission Divyastra, the first flight test of the indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology."Pakistan, meanwhile, also continued the development of new nuclear delivery platforms and accumulated more fissile material in 2024, suggesting an intent to further expand its nuclear arsenal in the coming decade, SIPRI to a brief India-Pakistan military clash in early 2025, SIPRI raised serious concerns about the risks of escalation during conventional conflicts between nuclear-armed Senior Researcher with SIPRI's Weapons of Mass Destruction Programme and Associate Director for the Nuclear Information Project at FAS, Matt Korda, warned: "The combination of strikes on nuclear-related military infrastructure and third-party disinformation risked turning a conventional conflict into a nuclear crisis."He added, "This should act as a stark warning for states seeking to increase their reliance on nuclear weapons."SIPRI also noted that while India and Pakistan continue to modernise their arsenals, China's nuclear build-up is progressing at a much faster rate. The report estimated that since 2023, China has been adding around 100 new nuclear warheads annually. By January 2025, China had completed or was nearing completion of approximately 350 new Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) silos spread across desert areas in the north and mountainous terrain in the east of the on its force structure, China could potentially match the number of ICBMs possessed by Russia or the United States by the end of the decade. However, even if China reaches the projected 1,500 warheads by 2035, it would still possess only about one-third the number of warheads currently held by Russia or the Director Dan Smith voiced concerns about the weakening of nuclear arms control and the prospects of a new nuclear arms race. "China is increasing its nuclear force steadily," Smith said, adding that the country could reach 1,000 warheads within the next seven to eight of January 2025, SIPRI estimated the total global nuclear warhead inventory at 12,241, of which about 9,614 were in military stockpiles for potential use. Around 3,912 warheads were deployed with operational missiles and aircraft, and the rest remained in central 2,100 of the deployed warheads were kept on high operational alert on ballistic missiles, most of them belonging to Russia or the United States. However, SIPRI noted that China may now also be maintaining some warheads on missiles during report further noted that since the end of the Cold War, Russia and the US had dismantled more warheads than they deployed each year, leading to a slow reduction in global nuclear stockpiles. But this trend may now be reversing, with dismantlement slowing down while deployment of new warheads said that all nine nuclear-armed states--the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, and Israel--continued to invest heavily in modernising their nuclear forces in 2024. A comprehensive national policy beyond party lines
Keshav Upadhye, a young, dynamic and prominent face, has been working with the Bharatiya Janata Party for over two decades. He was involved in two study groups formed by the Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini in 2006 to study the naxalite movement and its adverse impact on the development of Chhatisgarh. MORE In response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Indian Armed Forces successfully launched 'Operation Sindoor' targeting terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Not stopping there, it suspended the 'Indus Water Treaty' signed with Pakistan in the 1960s. In response to 'Operation Sindoor', Pakistan made several simultaneous missile attacks on India. All these attacks were foiled by India's anti-missile system. In response, India attacked some Pakistani air bases. India took limited military action to teach a lesson to Pakistan's rulers and military leaders. After this action, the Modi government decided to send a delegation of MPs from all parties as well as former ambassadors and politicians to various countries. Accordingly, a delegation of 59 people visited 32 countries. The delegation briefed various countries on Pakistan's direct link to the Pahalgam attack, the terrorist camps destroyed in Operation Sindoor, and the subsequent airstrikes on Pakistani military locations. The delegation recently returned to India. In order to ensure that India does not fall short in diplomacy along with its strong military policies, the Modi government decided to send an all-party delegation. With the broad vision of national interest, MPs from all parties chose to forget party differences and proudly represented their motherland on the international platform. This incident became a testimony to the mature foreign policy of the Modi government. MPs like AIMIM's Owaisi, Congress's Salman Khurshid, Anand Sharma, Manish Tiwari, Supriya Sule, DMK's Kanimozhi, who have been strongly critical of the Modi government and the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership on many issues, represented this delegation and presented India's side to the world very effectively. Former External Affairs Minister and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor led the delegation. By entrusting the leadership of this delegation to Tharoor, who has a deep knowledge of international politics, the Modi government showed its 'national interest is paramount' approach. Some groups tried to play parochial politics around the topic of this delegation. However, after realizing the angry and dissatisfied sentiments of the public about this, these groups did not prolong their ill experiments for long. In fact, while there was consensus between the ruling and opposition parties on this issue, there was no reason for some parties to assert political influence in the composition of the delegation. Congress had nominated four party members to participate in these delegations. Except for Anand Sharma, the government did not give a place to the other three. Instead, Shashi Tharoor was appointed as the head of the delegation. Congress was displeased by this. Tharoor has vast experience in diplomacy at the international level. Congress should have proposed Tharoor's name to the government on its own. However, due to opposition from some within the party to Tharoor's name, the Congress sent Sharma's name. The Congress leadership failed to realise that in such a situation, one should not be indulging in shallow party politics. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who also holds the position of Opposition Leader in the Lok Sabha, had demanded that the government should declare how many Indian aircrafts were shot down in 'Operation Sindoor'. This shows that Rahul Gandhi's shallowness has not subsided still. Congressmen are also waiting to see when Rahul Gandhi will have the wisdom to realize that by making such a demand, he is defaming his own country on the international stage. It was because of this stance that Congress's discord became public after Tharoor was assigned the leadership of the delegation. If the Modi government had included only BJP and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MPs in the delegation, the Congress's opposition would have been understandable. When that did not happen, the Congress leadership baselessly and unnecessarily blamed the Modi government on the delegation issue. There was no reason for Congress to be so hesitant about Tharoor's inclusion. This made a mockery of the Congress party. Tharoor has been openly praising the Modi government on various platforms after 'Operation Sindoor'. Some Congress leaders also complained about Tharoor over this. It was not expected that on one hand Rahul Gandhi would ask questions like how many Indian aircrafts have fallen down while on the other hand he would show the generosity of supporting the all-party delegation. As expected, this stance of Rahul Gandhi was well received in Pakistan. Terrorist leaders like Hafiz Saeed showered Rahul Gandhi with praise. India decided to call a ceasefire after receiving a proposal from Pakistan. Rahul tried to politicize that too. The Pakistan government itself has given information about which of its military bases were damaged due to India's attack. Despite the fact that Pakistan, which claims to have shot down Indian planes, has not been able to produce a single piece of evidence, Rahul Gandhi continues to trumpet and ask about how many Indian planes have been shot down.
