Najib betrayed public's trust, court told
Counsel Kwan Will Sen, representing SRC International and its subsidiary, Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd, in a civil suit against Najib, said it has been 10 years since the money ended up in Najib's personal accounts and now, the two companies want it returned.
Kwan made these remarks while delivering the opening statement on the first day of the trial in the civil suit filed by SRC International and Gandingan Mentari against Najib, who is the sole defendant.
'Three courts, namely the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court, have already found him criminally guilty of these very acts beyond a reasonable doubt.
'Najib was the finance minister at the time and had full control over SRC International. He held key positions, including that of adviser emeritus.
'As such, no significant transaction occurred without his knowledge or consent,' he said yesterday, Bernama reported.
Kwan added that evidence will show the RM42mil was transferred from SRC International and ultimately ended up in Najib's personal bank accounts.
Of this sum, RM32mil was immediately transferred to two companies that had previously covered shortfalls in Najib's accounts.
'These transfers were made pursuant to instruction letters bearing his personal signature.
'The remaining RM10mil was spent through personal cheques issued by Najib himself.
'We say that the money trail is clear, the documentary evidence is overwhelming, and Najib's own sworn admissions are damning.
'We will prove our case under three complementary causes of action: knowing receipt, dishonest assistance and misfeasance in public office.
'On any of these grounds, justice demands that these public funds be returned to their rightful owners, the Malaysian people,' Kwan said.
The court also heard testimony from the first witness, former chief executive officer of Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia, Ung Su Ling, 57, whose appointment was approved by Najib.
The hearing before Justice Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah Raja Mohzan is set to continue on Nov 6.
The lawsuit, filed in May 2022, accuses Najib of breach of fiduciary duties, knowing receipt of funds, dishonest assistance, tort of misfeasance in public office, and abuse of power in relation to the misappropriation of SRC International funds.

Malaysians embrace cashless payments for seamless travel experience
PETALING JAYA: When Adam Leong, 34, ran out of cash while purchasing at a convenience store in Jakarta, he began to panic. He then tried his luck and asked if it was possible to make a payment through his e-wallet account. 'I scanned the code, and the payment went through. Since then, I've never looked back. 'I only carry minimum amounts of cash during my overseas travels and rely heavily on e-wallet and bank cards for transactions,' he said. Leong is just one of the many Malaysians who have shifted away from physical currency and adopted digital transactions as their preferred mode of payment abroad. 'We foresee this trend continuing to strengthen over the next few years. 'Malaysians are increasingly digital-first in their payment behaviour, especially among younger and urban travellers,' said RHB Banking Group's Jeffrey Ng Eow Oo. The managing director of Group Community Banking anticipates that this trend will continue to accelerate among Malaysian travellers. 'Destinations like Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia have become especially popular, and their local payment infrastructure supports this trend,' he said, adding that as of mid-2025, more than 100,000 of their cards supporting this purpose have been issued locally. 'The top currencies used include the Euro, Pound Sterling, Australian Dollar, Japanese Yen, and US Dollar,' he said, adding that spending on this card was 2.4 times higher last year compared to 2022. 'As a bank, we see this not just as a product trend but as part of a broader shift in cross-border financial behaviour,' he said. Previously, Wise senior product manager Yee Won Nyon stated that Malaysia was now the company's fastest-growing market in the Asia Pacific region, with active users increasing by 80% year-over-year in the financial year ending March 31, 2025. She said Wise card usage continued to grow, with the number of cards issued in Malaysia rising by nearly 30% over the past financial year. She said Japan currently tops the list of travel destinations among Malaysian users, with yen balances rising 35% year-on-year, followed by significant spending in the United States, Indonesia, China, Australia and various European countries. TNG digital chief executive officer Alan Ni said the shift from cash to cashless payments was evident in both domestic and international travel. He added that cross-border payments were the company's fastest-growing business segment. Ni said partnerships with PayNet's national QR network, Alipay+ network, as well as Touch 'n Go eWallet Visa card, led to a 360% increase in users' average monthly overseas spending between 2023 and 2025. 'Today, we handle over RM300mil in cross-border payments every month,' he said, adding that the shift from cash to cashless was still at its early stages. 'This means there's still significant room for cashless growth,' he said previously.

Puad's lesson on PAS peppered with false claim DAP, MCA silent on Zara
An Umno supreme council member has falsely accused DAP and MCA of not speaking up on the death of 13-year-old Sabah student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Puad Zarkashi had raised this in criticising MCA former vice-president Ti Lian Ker for claiming that PAS appeared more rational compared to Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh and former law minister Zaid Ibrahim for agreeing with him. 'Don't assume that PAS is somehow more 'dignified' (berhemah) just because Akmal defended the Malaysian flag from being flown upside down. Akmal has never framed the flag issue as a racial matter.

Chery becomes first Chinese carmaker to export over 5 million vehicles
KUALA LUMPUR: Chery International Group has become the first Chinese car company to export more than five million vehicles worldwide. It has also maintained the No. 1 position for passenger car exports for 22 consecutive years. In July, Chery International achieved the "Double 500" milestone, emerging as the fastest-rising carmaker on both the Fortune Global 500 and the Fortune China 500 lists. The group is now ranked 233rd globally, up from 385th in 2024. It is ranked 59th in China, up from 100th in 2024. These achievements were driven by the Omoda/Jaecoo brand in 44 markets across Asean, Europe, Australia and South America. In just over two years, Omoda/Jaecoo amassed a 37 per cent share of Chery International's total export volume, with cumulative global sales surpassing 570,000 units. It is the fastest emerging brand globally to exceed the half-million mark in sales. Omoda/Jaecoo models have also made significant strides in the new energy vehicle (NEV) category. In the first quarter of this year, NEV models accounted for 13,023 units, a sharp rise from 2,325 units in the same period in 2024. In the first half of 2025, NEVs accounted for 40 per cent of its total exports. Omoda/Jaecoo's global momentum is equally evident in Europe, where it has become the fastest-growing Chinese automotive brand and the first ever to sell over 10,000 units in Spain within 11 months in the market. In Malaysia, the brand grew quickly after the Jaecoo J7 was launched in July 2024. The company announced that more than 17,000 of its vehicles are now on Malaysian roads. According to the Road Transport Department, Omoda/Jaecoo remained among Malaysia's top five automotive brands in the first half of 2025. Moving forward, Omoda/Jaecoo's global export strategy will focus on deeper investments in key markets in Europe, South America and Asean. Malaysia will serve as the centralised right-hand drive hub to support the brand's global ambitions.
