Australian podcaster's viral clip sparks discussion about traditional gender norms
An Australian podcaster's desire for a partner who does not "complain" after work and instead offers "peace and love" to support his ambitions has sparked discussions about the resurgence of traditional gender norms.
The viral clip from The Pocket with Chris Griffin, which has amassed more than 1.4 million views and attracted thousands of comments, shows the host saying he would not want his partner "working unless she wants to work" because he does not want to come home to "complaining".
Instead, he says, he wants his partner's eyes to "light up with excitement" and he encourages "hot girl walks" so his partner can cultivate "feminine energy".
"It's the peace and love that a man that's got a busy life [and] that's chasing his dreams needs when he's trying to wind down," he added.
Experts say Griffin's view reflects a growing trend among young men to return to traditional gender norms.
But, speaking to the ABC, Griffin suggested people who were rejecting these norms were going "against their biology".
His views have sparked a backlash from viewers online. Among the critics is Kic CEO Laura Henshaw, who has addressed the clip on her social media accounts and the KICPOD podcast.
Ms Henshaw told the ABC she was particularly concerned about how the video was packaged in an aspirational way, as if it was "a caring and loving message when it's actually not at all".
She argued that the crescendo-building piano soundtrack, motivational framing and polished studio setting and editing masked harmful content.
Some experts describe this kind of framing as "benevolent sexism".
Social psychologists have defined benevolent sexism as attitudes toward women that appear positive or well-meaning on the surface but ultimately suggest that women are inferior to men, often by portraying them as fragile, less competent, or in need of protection.
Deakin University psychology lecturer Beatrice Alba says benevolent sexism can take many forms, including:
"Benevolent sexism is kind of like old-fashioned chivalry," Dr Alba told the ABC.
"It's this belief that women and men are inherently different by nature — that women are softer and more emotional, more suited to nurturing roles, and that men are stronger and should protect and provide for women."
The viral clip appears to echo this dynamic by casting men as providers who keep the finances "sorted", while women are expected to be emotional caretakers, offering "peace and love" to support her partner's ambitions.
"Imagine wanting to work so hard so you can give your partner safety and freedom of choice, just to be labelled toxic and misogynistic. I don't agree," Griffin said in a response posted online.
Speaking to the ABC, he rejected the idea that traditional gender norms were inherently unequal.
"The problem lies with societal norms suggesting [traditional gender roles are] toxic, which creates confusion, resulting in people feeling the need to go against their biology," he said.
He argued moving away from traditional gender roles was often praised as "progressive" but the label was misleading because there was "no substance behind that label to suggest it is actually beneficial for society".
Research suggests that women exposed to benevolent sexism allow men to tell them what they can and cannot do, feel less competent, and increasingly accept hostile sexism.
Dr Alba said benevolent sexism could be difficult to spot because it sounded "superficially positive … like men being generous towards women in wanting to care for them and to provide for them".
Evita March, an associate professor at Federation University, agreed, saying benevolent sexism sought to foster dependence under the guise of support.
"Viewing women in that benevolent way still reduces them to being objectified because they're perceived as unable to be this individual who takes care of themselves," Dr March said.
In an Instagram comment directed at Laura Henshaw, Griffin defended his stance and said: "This isn't about control. It's about choice. If she wants to chase a career, I'll back her 100%. If she wants to stay home, I'll support that too. That's what freedom in a relationship should look like."
Dr Alba said this applied a standard to women that was not typically applied to men.
"Like why not just flip it around and say to this guy, well why don't you quit your job and stay at home and be happy?"
"There's something inherently condescending about thinking that a woman is somehow less suited to [work] than a man … Don't you think I'm capable of being someone who has a challenging job and, just like you, when I come home from work, I want to debrief about the challenges I had?" she added.
Though his video has faced a backlash online, Griffin's words echo a broader sentiment among young men.
Research from the e61 Institute found that gen Z men were more likely to hold traditional gender beliefs than older men.
On average, men aged 15-24 had a greater belief in traditional gender norms than men aged 25-34 and 35-44.
At the same time, women of the same age are far less traditional, creating a noticeable divergence between young men and women.
According to Dr March, the shift can be partly explained by disenfranchisement and a growing sense of confusion among young men about what it means to be a man.
This uncertainty is driving many men to seek out the manosphere — a sprawling network of online men's communities that often blur the line between self-help and sexism.
Griffin argued traditional masculine traits were being unfairly vilified.
"Strength is called toxic, leadership is seen as oppressive, masculinity itself is treated like a problem to be fixed rather than a virtue to be honed," he told the ABC.
A report by Movember found that young men who regularly engaged with content from masculinity influencers reported feeling far more positive than negative emotional outcomes.
Forty-three per cent said the content made them feel motivated, while 44 per cent reported a stronger sense of purpose.
But alongside these emotional benefits, the report revealed a troubling pattern in attitudes towards women:
She also warned that the manosphere placed heavy and damaging expectations on men themselves.
"What I really want to emphasise is that this manospherish rhetoric, including the idea that men must always be providers and supporters, puts enormous pressure on men," Dr March said.
"When you talk about these potential negative aspects of the manosphere, some men are really reluctant to come to the party and admit that because they say, 'Well, no. It's really helped me.'"
These conversations about the resurgence of traditional gender norms hit home for Ms Henshaw.
She recalled how her mother took extended time off work to raise her and her sisters.
After her parents separated, her mother faced the challenge of rebuilding her financial independence.
"We have a fridge magnet that says, 'A man is not a financial plan,'" Ms Henshaw said.
She said she was grateful to have grown up with that understanding because "there's no way I would be where I am now without it".
Today, Ms Henshaw is the CEO of hugely successful business empire Kic and she has recently used her platform to raise awareness of how women can be at risk of financial abuse and vulnerability.
"I just think if you haven't experienced it or seen it with someone within your life … how would you know that that could happen?" she said.
Her family's experience is not an outlier. A KPMG report on the superannuation gap found that women aged 55-59 had, on average, 33 per cent less superannuation than men, while women aged 60-64 had 28 per cent less.
Dr March explained that much of this gap was due to the time women took off work for caring responsibilities, a sacrifice that significantly reduced their superannuation.
"Because they had a man who controlled the finances, they didn't have a career, they left the workforce," she said.
"And so this very cohort of women who had men who were promising to take care of them are now left in our largest growing homeless cohort that we see in Australia."

How have so many Australians ended up doing big things in K-pop?
With so many Australians doing big things in K-pop, a key question is why. How is it that Australia has produced so many homegrown K-pop stars? This is something Roald Maliangkay from the Australian National University has pondered. And yes, he is named after the late decorated British children's author Roald Dahl. Professor Maliangkay specialises in popular culture in East Asia and has researched the South Korean entertainment industry throughout the 20th century up to the present day. He's come up with a few reasons why Australia is fertile ground for producing K-pop stars. "I think one important reason is that a lot of the Korean Australians here speak Korean, maybe not well, but they are fairly recent migrants," Professor Maliangkay said. "It's usually their parents who migrate to Australia and that means that their parents will speak Korean at home. "I think that's one important reason so that makes it very likely for the trainees, which they are at first, to at least be familiar with the sounds so they can pick up Korean quite easily even if they didn't always speak Korean at home or outside in public. "So, I think the language aspect is quite significant." Professor Maliangkay says demographics plays a part. "Of course, we are a very small country in terms of population but if you look at cities like Sydney and Melbourne then the concentration of Asians around you will be much greater which probably provides a bit of an impetus for young people to try and establish their own identity and be noticed. "And I think that is another driver for young Australians with an Asian background to perhaps try their luck at becoming a K-pop artist." "Another factor is that communication amongst Australians tends to be rather positive," Professor Maliangkay said. "People here communicate in a very positive manner. "Australians are really good at representing themselves and in engaging in conversation so that also makes things easy for an agency. "Australians are generally very polite, they're pleasant and they use a lot of words like fantastic, wonderful and great, which when you go to Britain that is not exactly the case." Professor Maliangkay says it's unlikely there are political reasons at play, but it could be a tiny factor. "I don't think it is very likely that it's a political decision not to go with a United States-born artist," he said. "But I do think that it's a little easier for Chinese fans to fall in love with a non-US based idol than it is when you're dealing with someone born in Australia. "It's a tiny factor and the fans ultimately will fall in love anyway, but I think it might make things just a little easier." "If you're a young person and you want to go to a workshop in Korea and try your luck at an audition, at the moment, the time difference between us and Seoul is one hour only," Professor Maliangkay said. "So, that makes going back-and-forth even when you're in high school just a little easier. "Again, that's a tiny reason just like the political one but the other reasons I'm more sure of, that is, the language aspect, the greater convergence of Asian Australians and then the communication and the representation of Australians in general." So, who has made it big and who is on their way? Blackpink's Rosé made history when her collaboration with Bruno Mars APT debuted at number one on the ARIA singles chart making her the first solo female K-pop star to top the ARIA chart. "She was born in New Zealand but then she was raised in Melbourne, I think from the age of seven and then she trained herself singing in church choirs," says Professor Maliangkay. "She just suddenly had the courage when she was quite young, I think she was 16, to pack her bags and go to YG entertainment where she went to train, and it worked out. "In the beginning, she was an absolute nobody, of course, and risked a lot doing all this and spending money on this. NewJeans broke a Guinness World Record when they became the fastest K-pop act to reach a billion streams on Spotify, unseating BTS. They have two Australian members. "Danielle was born outside a big city, in Newcastle, NSW," Professor Maliangkay said. "She has an Australian father and a Korean mother. "And they moved to Korea in 2019 at around the age of 14. "She was kind of scouted by HYBE. "Hanni was born in Melbourne and she's half Vietnamese. "[She] moved to Seoul around 2020 at the age of 16 so that would make her 21 right now. "She also ended up with the same company, with HYBE." Fans of K-pop would be aware of some recent news surrounding the multinational entertainment company HYBE. "Although the company has responded to the recent allegations of insider trading by a former executive saying it is fully cooperating with the authorities, it denies any wrongdoing by chairman Bang Si-hyuk. "And yet, since December, Bang has been under police investigation on suspicion of profiting by as much as $450 million from misleading shareholders during the company's listing." HYBE has issued the following statement to ABC News on the matter. Regarding NewJeans, Professor Maliangkay says fans were distraught to learn of a stand-off between NewJeans and parent company HYBE. "What is more, following the public fallout over management rights with former CEO Min Hee-jin of ADOR that began in April last year, NewJeans's activities have now been put on hold, with ADOR last Friday winning an injunction against the group members engaging in any unauthorised individual entertainment activities until the legal process has run its course," Professor Maliangkay said. "The idols stand by Min and argue that HYBE's reorganisation of ADOR has turned it into something very different from the label they signed with. "Conflicts between idols and their management over contracts are not uncommon. Groups like Fifty Fifty, Loona, and TVXQ have faced serious disputes, some of which have led to their disbandment. "While the high stakes of investment and intense competition help explain the often inequitable nature of contracts, fans typically rally behind the idols, so the companies almost always stand to lose from public disputes. "I suspect that quite a few fans will respond to the scandals either by not investing as much money in HYBE products, or embracing the idols of other agencies, or both. "Despite the negative reports surrounding HYBE's management, however, fans' excitement for BTS's long-awaited return — marked by SUGA's military discharge on June 21 — will likely remain undiminished." HYBE subsidiary ADOR has issued the following statement. "We express our sincere gratitude for the court's judicious decision to grant the preliminary injunction. Bang Chan was born and raised in Sydney and Felix grew up in Sydney. "Felix is the fashion icon, partly, of Stray Kids and he's doing really well in that sense in addition to of course being a very talented performer," Professor Maliangkay said. "Bang Chan is also very much a composer. "He has his own kind of composing agency as well. "So, he's composed quite a lot of music for Stray Kids. "He's also the leader of [the group]. "If I had to pick the top K-pop groups at the moment, NewJeans and Stray Kids would be in that list. "It's quite something to have both groups having two Australian members so it is significant and that's why I think it's very good to ask indeed why is it? "Because you do wonder why is it that there are so many Australians [in K-pop]." NMIXX's Lily is returning home this month to perform in Melbourne and Sydney. "Lily was born in Marysville, Victoria to a Korean mother and an Australian father," Professor Maliangkay said. "About 10 years ago, she left to work for JYP Entertainment. "She signed a contract in 2015 and eventually then into 2022 she then debuted with NMIXX, which means seven years of training and preparation before you actually end up being a frontline act. "It's a long time to just be training, it's a bit like doing a PhD." "Jake was born in South Korea but then grew up in Brisbane,' Professor Maliangkay said. "He moved back to Seoul in 2019 and then trained under HYBE. "Roughly after one year he was made part of Enhypen and I think they're doing quite well. "Of course, Brisbane also has a very large Asian community, so I suppose there's a little bit of an impetus for young Asian Australians to kind of stand out a little bit and do something different, be noticed, and then of course with all trainees the lure of fame, money, fashion, and perhaps cosmetic surgery, which is definitely one of the perks, because the agencies will help you arrange that." Others to watch out for are Robin from who has debuted, and who said on TikTok that he went to the same school as Felix from Stray Kids and cites the whole group as role models. And Mackiah from ampers&one who is from Western Sydney and debuted in 2023.

Glenn Maxwell retires from one day cricket after glittering career featuring two World Cup wins
Star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has retired from one day international cricket after a stellar career which saw him win two World Cups. Maxwell, 36, will remain an active part of Australia's T20 set-up in a bid to win next year's short-form World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. He retires as one of the most explosive batters in the history of the sport, having made 149 ODI appearances for Australia since making his debut against Afghanistan in 2012. Maxwell scored 3,990 ODI runs at an average of 33.81 and a strike rate of 126.70, which is the second-highest in the history of one day cricket. He scored four ODI centuries, with his top score of 201 not out against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup considered to be one of the greatest one day innings of all time. Maxwell also took 77 one day wickets with his handy off-spin and was one of the best fielders in the world in his prime, taking 91 catches. The last few years of Maxwell's career have been hampered by injuries, and he said the various ailments played a part in him focusing on the shortest format of the game. "I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how (the) body was reacting to the conditions," he told the Final Word Podcast. "I had a good chat with (Chair of Selectors) George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward. "We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him, 'I don't think I am going to make that, it's time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own'. Hopefully they get enough of a lead-in to hang onto that role. "I always said I wasn't going to hand my position over if I felt like I was still good enough to play. I didn't want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons. "They are moving in such a clear direction so this gives them the best look at what the line-up is leading into that next World Cup. I know how important that planning is." Maxwell was lauded by Cricket Australia boss Todd Greenberg, who called him "one of the most exciting and influential" one day players in the history of cricket. "Glenn's ballistic batting has lit up the cricket world and been one of the cornerstones of Australia's continued success in the 50 over game, including his heroic role in the 2023 World Cup triumph," Greenberg said in a statement. "As with other greats of the game, crowds have flocked to grounds just to watch Glenn bat and children have been inspired to pick up a bat after seeing him put opposition attacks to the sword with a breathtaking array of shots. "Glenn will be known as one of the one-day game's most dynamic players, who had key roles in two ODI World Cup victories," added Bailey. "His level of natural talent and skill is remarkable. His energy in the field, underrated ability with the ball and longevity has been superb. What else stands out is his passion for and commitment to playing for Australia."
