Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch Clash On Dale Jr.'s NASCAR Crew Chief Role

Newsweek24-06-2025
Following Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s first win as crew chief for NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Connor Zilisch at Pocono, Kyle Busch dismissed the effort as a publicity stunt. However, Denny Hamlin disagreed with Busch, stating that Dale Jr. still had to manage strategy and take on the responsibility of a crew chief.
Co-owner of JR Motorsports, Dale Jr. took on the role of interim crew chief for his driver Zilisch, filling in for Mardy Lindley, who faced a one-race suspension. However, Busch argued that there was enough technology to have Lindley connected remotely, suggesting that there was no need for Dale Jr. to step in. Speaking to Dalton Hopkins, he said:
"It's all publicity, but spin it how you want it. He's just going to be a warm body sitting on top of the box. You know, they've got enough stuff from the shop and enough technology these days of being able to have the crew chief still involved. So, I could say I could do the same thing with one of my truck teams, but the guys at the shop would be the ones handling it.

Eyeballs, and putting some attention on their team, and stuff like that. I mean, JRM is one of the top two, three teams in the Xfinity Series. So, let the best man win."
Hamlin took a slightly more diplomatic stand on the matter and admitted that credit must be given to Dale Jr. for taking on the responsibility. He said on his Actions Detrimental podcast:
"I think we've got to give Dale Jr. a little bit of due and certainly, don't want to undersell the fact that the team was doing the heavy lifting. I think that the answer can be somewhere in between of Kyle Busch says he's nothing but a warm body up there — the TV sells it as if he's an actual crew chief — I think the answer is probably somewhere in between. But you still got to be responsible, right?
"You got to get the messages to the driver, and he saw opportunities, strategy wise, and he's probably talking to the engineers about the strategy. The result was he was walking to Victory Lane at the end of that race and obviously, Connor drove that car fantastic."
Dale Jr. acknowledged in the post-race press conference at Pocono that he was under a ton of pressure while performing the role of a crew chief. Busch later clarified his stance on the matter on X, saying he was pointing out how silly crew chief suspensions are since they can be in touch with their teams, and stressed that he had nothing against Dale Jr. He wrote:
"This has nothing to do w any animosity towards Dale jr. I'm referencing how silly the suspensions for cc [crew chief] are these days w all the technology they have to stay in contact w their teams. I'd say the same thing if JG [Jeff Gordon] went on a HMS [Hendrick Motorsports] box as a cc." [sic]

Dale Jr. Makes Big Statement On Connor Zilisch's NASCAR Future originally appeared on The Spun. Few drivers in the sport of racing can say they've been on the kind of heater that 19-year-old Connor Zilisch has been enjoying over the past nine races in Xfinity. With four wins, three runner-ups and a pair of top-five finishes, Zilisch has been everything he was advertised to be when he first made his NASCAR debut; and Dale Earnhardt Jr. believes this is just the beginning for the Charlotte, NC native. "He has the potential to do incredible, incredible Hall of Fame worthy things," Dale Jr. said after Saturday's checkered flag. "Oh man. He's a hell of a driver." "You know, he just went up there and got it back," Earnhardt added. "We've got great race cars, a good race car underneath him to do what he needed to do. So, it takes a lot of us ... that's what wins races in places like this and at Dover. So, thank y'all for all the hard work ... it's important to our performance." With only a handful of races left on the racing calendar, Zilisch is just 21 points behind fellow JRM teammate Justin Allgaier for this season's points lead. Zilisch himself was fired up after the win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Telling reporters: "I see some bricks that look kissable, and I'm going to kiss them. This is awesome. One hundred wins for JRM. Congrats to Dale, Kelley, L.W. [Miller], everybody who's raced for JRM, everybody who works at JRM." With how Connor has performed in the Xfinity Series it may not be long before he makes the jump to the Cup where he'll race against the big dawgs. 'The best dad.' IndyCar's Scott McLaughlin shares message after Bubba Wallace won Brickyard 400

INDIANAPOLIS — Bubba Wallace claimed his first NASCAR Cup Series win at the Brickyard 400 on Sunday, the third victory of his career, and even after taking the lead on Lap 143 had his own doubts. "The last 20 laps, there were ups and downs of me telling myself I wasn't going to be able to do it," he said. The race broadcast shared fuel concerns, one that even Denny Hamlin was unsure of, but Wallace did a burnout after crossing the bricks first after a red flag for rain in Turn 1 that lasted 18 minutes, and then a second overtime. Wallace was able to kiss the bricks with his wife, Amanda, and their son, Becks, who was two days shy of being 10 months old. A photo shortly after was shared on Twitter, and IndyCar driver Scott McLaughlin had a heartfelt message. McLaughlin had finished, key word of late as he poked fun at recapping his own race, 10th at the IndyCar race at Laguna Seca, which was won by Alex Palou before the Brickyard 400 wrapped up despite a later start time. "This guy is the best dad," McLaughlin wrote on Twitter. "Has been going through it with the racing gods. Always one of the first people to text me if we have a bad day. So happy for Bdub, a great dude and I hope the haters enjoyed that." McLaughlin's 10th-place finish ended a drought of consecutive races with DNFs. He crashed on Lap 1 of Iowa Race 2 and again on Lap 3 at Toronto, finishing 26th in both races. McLaughlin sits tied for 11th with Rinus VeeKay (259 points) in the championship standings in what's become a Palou runaway (590) with a slim margin for Pato O'Ward (469) to catch him.
