Chhattisgarh Armed Force constable deployed for road project dies in blast

Hindustan Times21-04-2025
RAIPUR: A 26-year-old constable of the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) lost his life in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in Chhattisgarh's Maoist-affected Bijapur district on Monday, police said.
According to a statement issued by the Bijapur police, the blast occurred between Toynar and Farsegarh villages, where a CAF team had been deployed to provide security for an ongoing road construction project. The road, meant to improve connectivity in the remote region, is currently being built between the two villages.
The victim, Manoj Pujari (26) was part of the CAF's 19th battalion and he inadvertently stepped on an IED planted by Maoists, leading to the fatal blast.
Police have launched a search operation in the area following the incident.
The IEDs planted by Maoists remain a major threat in the Bastar region, which comprises seven districts including Bijapur. Insurgents frequently bury explosive devices along roads and forest paths to target security forces conducting patrols. Civilians have also fallen victim to these deadly traps.
On April 9, a CRPF jawan was injured in an IED blast in Bijapur. On April 4, a 25-year-old man died, and another person was injured in a similar explosion in Narayanpur district. On March 30, a 40-year-old tribal woman lost her life to a Naxal-planted IED in Bijapur.

Maoist Killed In Encounter With Police In Chaibasa, SLR Rifle Seized

A Maoist was killed in a fierce encounter with police and security forces near Sauta village under Goilkera police station limits in West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, on Wednesday morning. An SLR rifle was recovered from the site, officials said. Jharkhand Police IG (Operations) Dr Michael Raj said the encounter took place during a joint search operation in the Goilkera area, a known Maoist stronghold. He said as the team entered the forested hill terrain of Sauta, Maoist cadres opened indiscriminate fire. The forces retaliated, triggering a gun battle that lasted for nearly an hour, with several rounds of firing exchanged from both sides. According to the IG, the rebels suffered significant losses. A Maoist body was recovered after the area was secured, though the deceased is yet to be identified. He said security forces have intensified combing operations in the area to track down Maoists who managed to escape. For the past several weeks, police have been conducting sustained anti-Naxal operations in the Saranda region and adjoining forests -- dismantling Maoist bunkers, seizing large caches of IEDs, and recovering weapons. Officials say the campaign aims to eradicate Maoist influence from the region. Dr Raj asserted that the forces have been achieving 'continuous success' and expressed confidence that Maoist activities in the area will soon be eliminated. This year alone, 23 Maoists have been killed in various encounters across Jharkhand. In April, eight Maoists -- including top leader Prayag Manjhi alias Vivek -- were gunned down in a major operation in Bokaro district's Lugu Hills. Earlier, police had claimed that Maoist activities are now restricted only to the Saranda jungles in Jharkhand. They said they have been eliminated from other areas. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier said that the security forces will wipe out Maoism from the country by March next year. He also appealed to the Maoists to surrender and join the mainstream by availing the government's rehabilitation package.

Maoist killed in gunfight with security forces in Jharkhand's Chaibasa

RANCHI: A Maoist was killed during an encounter with security forces in the Sauta jungles under Goilkera police station in Chaibasa. According to police sources, security forces recovered the Maoist's body along with an SLR rifle from the spot. IG Operations Dr Michael Raj said the Maoists suffered heavy losses during the encounter, and the search operation is still ongoing. Local police said a joint team of Jharkhand Police and CRPF were conducting a search operation in the area when the Maoist squad, already present there, opened fire on them. The security forces immediately retaliated, during which one Maoist was killed. The deceased has not yet been identified. Police have been running a continuous campaign against Maoists in the Saranda area of Chaibasa, demolishing many bunkers used for hiding during encounters. Several IEDs have also been recovered. Currently, Maoists are largely restricted to the Saranda jungles in Jharkhand, having been driven out of other pockets of the state. Estimates suggest that around 85–90 Maoists are hiding in Saranda, where thousands of IEDs have been planted, posing a challenge for security forces. Despite this, forces are advancing slowly into the jungles with determination and have established several temporary security camps in the Maoists' core areas. The state police launched a joint operation in the Kolhan and Saranda jungles in November 2022 after receiving a tip-off that senior Maoist leaders, including Misir Besra and Patiram Majhi alias Anal Da, were hiding in this strategically important forest stretch.
