The volatility of the stock market and the latest tariff news were not enough to draw viewers to the evening news broadcasts. All three newcasts experienced declines in total viewers and Adults 25-54 for the week of April 7.
CBS News saw the biggest week-to-week declines as its reimagined flagship evening news broadcast posted a double-digit drop in the advertiser-coveted demo.
Note: The weekly average of CBS Evening News is based on four days (Tuesday – Friday). Monday's (04/07/2025) broadcast was retitled to CBS Evening Nws due to the Men's Basketball NCAA Tournament Championship game. This broadcast is excluded from the weekly and season averages.
According to live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen, ABC World News Tonight with David Muir averaged 7.484 million total viewers and 1.020 A25-54 viewers. That translates to declines of -1% in the former category and -2% in the latter compared to the previous week. Looking at its performance alongside the same week in 2024 (the week of April 8), WNT was up +1% in total viewers, but dipped -2% in the demo.
NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt finished as the No. 2 evening newscast in total viewers and the demo, averaging 6.089 million viewers and 849,000 viewers, respectively. Week-to-week Nightly News was down a respective -1% and -6% in those measured categories. Year-to-year, the newscast was flat in total viewers, but up +2% in the demo-the largest increase of any of the networks in either viewership category.
Tom Llamas-Holt's successor on Nightly News-anchored the broadcast on Wednesday and Thursday.
CBS Evening News saw 3.739 million total viewers and 491,000 A25-54 viewers for respective declines of -5% and -12% in those measured categories. Compared to 2024, the newscast declined -17% in total viewers and -26% in the demo.

Actor Hal Linden, 94, Reveals Surprising Reason Why 'Barney Miller' Ended
Barney Miller star Hal Linden opened up about the end of his iconic sitcom 43 years ago. During a June 2025 appearance with his former co-star Max Gail at The Hollywood Show in Burbank, CA, Linden, 94, revealed that the police-themed sitcom was not canceled by ABC when it ended its eight-season run in 1982. The actor explained that showrunner Danny Arnold decided to end the series because he couldn't find any writers amid the turnover of his writing team. 'The last year, Danny called us all together and said 'Listen, we're having writing problems, finding new writers,' Linden recalled, per Remind magazine. 'So, he said, 'I'm going to solicit scripts from everywhere — colleges, anywhere, anybody who thinks they're a writer.'" "And he went away for a month, and that's what he did," the actor continued. "He solicited scripts from any writing source to see if he could find writers. And a month later, he came back and said, 'Guys, there's no reason to do this show unless we can do it right. And I cannot find writers.'' Linden previously told Archive of American Television that after Arnold suffered health problems, he was unable to oversee the ever-changing writing team. 'He didn't have his hands on anymore that closely as he did in the beginning when every word went through Danny to make sure that it was perfect,' Linden explained. 'And so, in the next-to-last year, he wanted to close the show because he was having trouble finding writing sources.' Barney Miller aired on ABC from 1975 to 1982. Linden played Captain Barney Miller in the Emmy-winning series set a New York Police Department in Greenwich Village, while Gail played Officer Stan 'Wojo' Wojciehowicz. The hit series also featured Abe Vigoda, Ron Glass, Jack Soo, Gregory Sierra, James Gregory, Steve Landesberg, Ron Carey, and Barbara Barrie.
