The Soccer Tournament (TST), a seven-a-side, winner-takes-all competition, has become something of a post-retirement playground for the U.S. women's national team — with a $1 million prize on the line.
The tournament originally started as a men's-only competition in Cary, N.C. But when US Women showed up in the second year, competing among the men, they became an instant fan favorite. So much so that the competition expanded to include a women's division last year … and US Women took home the title.

While Solo's team, Solo FC, fell in the quarterfinals this year, Lloyd and US Women beat Bumpy Pitch FC — headlined by former Gotham FC midfielder McCall Zerboni — in tonight's final to go back-to-back. Twenty-year-old University of North Carolina midfielder Evelyn Shores scored the million-dollar goal.
The goal adds to Shore's recent success, which includes being the only college player called into the USWNT under-23 camp last month and scoring the winning goal in the team's friendly against Germany on May 30.
Spearheaded by the energizer bunny of the USWNT, Heather O'Reilly, US Women have become a mix of the legends you know and the youth players you know.

Game of the weekend
Despite several players having just returned from various trips with their national teams, this weekend's NWSL action did not suffer. There were big goals and plenty of lead changes.

However, Saturday's 2-2 draw between Angel City FC and the Chicago Stars had the goal of the week … and maybe the year. Just watch Ally Schlegel's go-head goal for yourself:
Angel City's first match under new head coach Alexander Straus had a lot of layers to it. Thankfully Tamerra is here to sum it up:
Twenty-year-old defender Savy King returned to BMO Stadium for the first time since she collapsed during a game on May 9 and was rushed to the hospital. King, the No. 2 draft pick in 2024, underwent surgery and was discharged on May 18.
Shortly after kickoff Saturday, the in-stadium video screen and ION broadcast panned to a smiling King, who waved to the crowd and made the shape of a heart with her hands. She joined her teammates on the pitch after the match as well. Angel City midfielder Kennedy Fuller, one of the night's goal scorers, said after the game that it was great 'to be able to see her so healthy and happy.'

On the field, there were a few moments that made me wonder whether Straus, who joined Angel City from Bayern Munich, would be subject to the same rude awakening the NWSL has previously dealt European coaches. Sharing points with the team currently sitting bottom of the table isn't exactly the ideal impression a new manager wants to set, but for what it was worth, Straus seemed to enjoy his first NWSL experience.
NWSL adds new rules
As Dua Lipa once said: 'I got new rules, I count 'em.'
On Thursday, the NWSL announced a change to its rulebook that allows its teams to loan players to clubs within the league.

Loans were already a growing part of the league's sporting operation, with many clubs sending young players to temporary stops in the USL Super League and other circuits. Jeff explains that this change is a big one.
Clubs sending players on loan can still ensure they'll be part of their plans at the end of the season when their loans expire — if they're under contracts. Teams acquiring loanees, as soon as the window opens on July 1, can round out their rosters by bringing in players for less than their full wage, with the loaning team covering the rest. Players have even more options available for their development, meaning a rookie could sign with a contender out of college and still have a path to starting NWSL minutes in their first season.
Meg's Corner: Boston Legacy embraces swans
Following the reveal of Boston Legacy FC's new crest Saturday, there's been no drama (whew) — just a range of solidly positive (or at the very least, neutral) reactions to the badge. It looked like a great party, too, despite the rain on Boston Common. They even had a fully wrapped Duck Boat. Peak Boston.

The swan and its history in the area are big, but it's the details — including a nod to the original eight NWSL clubs, represented by the number of feathers on the swan (and their angles designed to reflect the Zakim Bridge) — that make the crest stand out.
It's a big win for the Legacy, one that they've needed. The club also told me it did mid-five-figure sales in merch on launch day and picked up over 100 new season ticket deposits at Saturday's event. It's not just a momentum swing in the right direction, roughly eight months out from the team's inaugural preseason — it's a new bridge to building trust and relationships with the community of Boston.

Giráldez's farewell tour in Washington
Jonatan Giráldez won the first of his last three games in charge of the Washington Spirit yesterday, a 3-1 victory over the North Carolina Courage (who were without head coach Sean Nahas due to medical reasons). It was Giráldez's last game at Audi Field.

The reception was largely positive — though there were chants for assistant Adrián González, who would take on Giráldez's job at the end of the match — but winning helps that.
On Friday, Giráldez called his midseason departure to lead OL Lyonnes 'not ideal,' but encouraged fans and players to 'keep working' and supporting the team.

A trio of England exits ahead of Euro 2025 brought an air of uncertainty to head coach Sarina Wiegman's 23-player selection for the 2025 European Championship this summer.
First, goalkeeper Mary Earps announced that she was retiring from international football. Then England trounced Portugal 6-0 in the UEFA Nations League.
Midfielder Fran Kirby was a second-half substitute in the match, but she didn't feature in the following 2-1 loss to Spain. Shortly after the final whistle, she, too, announced her retirement from international football, saying to ESPN: 'I just didn't want to overstay my welcome.'
Wednesday morning, ahead of Thursday's squad announcement, defender Millie Bright shared that she was withdrawing from selection, saying she was 'not able to give 100 percent mentally or physically.' Bright later underwent a minor knee surgery.

Hungry Becky Eyes: Former USWNT captain Becky Sauerbrunn got a hometown hero's welcome last week at Energizer Park in St. Louis, Mo., as the U.S. defeated Jamaica 4-0. Here's what went down this weekend: Cascadia rises above the rest What makes a rivalry? As Tamerra said on the 'Full Time' podcast last week, it's a question akin to the internet meme, 'Is a hot dog a sandwich?' because it's in the eye of the beholder. While one matchup showed why history matters, the NWSL's inaugural rivalry week otherwise fell flat. (Tip: Read to the end to see the cringiest moment of the weekend.) As we mentioned last week, there were really only three potential rivalries on the schedule. San Diego Wave versus Angel City had the proximity element, but was missing key figures and history between the two expansion clubs. On Saturday, the teams remained level until the 85th minute when Makenzy Robbe scored for the Wave. Australian forward Alanna Kennedy found the equalizer, and her first goal of the season, in the 92nd minute, but even late-game fireworks couldn't save the SoCal Derby from falling short of its potential. Earlier in the day, Gotham FC vs. Washington Spirit had the key figures, including a second-half appearance from Trinity Rodman. It also had the proximity element and some history (does last year's semifinal battle count?). However, the midday game felt more like a summer tournament hangover, featuring several Euro 2025 stars and ending in a scoreless draw. It didn't exactly scream animosity when Gotham's home crowd cheered Rodman's entrance, either. When all else fails, however, the Cascadia Rivalry is there. Seattle Reign and Portland Thorns met for the 43rd time across all competitions on Sunday in a thrilling 4-2 weekend finale. A season-high crowd of 21,811 fans watched the foes square off with plenty of goals, badge pointing and legends of the matchup, Megan Rapinoe and Christine Sinclair, in the stands. You know the marketing angle hasn't overtaken the organic development of the intense pettiness it takes to spark a rivalry when even Alex Morgan is shrugging her shoulders at some of the league-declared rivalries during mid-game interviews in San Diego. And honestly, isn't that a good thing? Personally, I had high hopes for Utah Royals vs. Kansas City Current in light of Ally Sentnor's recent trade. And while she was booed when she came off the bench, the 1-0 result didn't exactly live up to the ferocity of a bitter rivalry. Advertisement Here's where things stand after week 15. What's happening in North Carolina? Head coaches became the topic of last week after the North Carolina Courage abruptly fired Sean Nahas. The 47-year-old had been with the club as an assistant since 2017 and moved into the head coaching role on an interim basis in 2021 following the firing of Paul Riley. By the 2022 season, he was promoted to the role permanently. He had an overall record of 36-35-19. The club announced it let Nahas go with a terse, 39-word statement on Wednesday. The following day, the club tried to quell reporters' curiosities during a press conference where Courage sporting director Ceri Bowley repeated that there were 'a multitude of factors' for Nahas' termination. The press conference at times grew combative when reporters pressed for specifics, and the club refused to share much beyond how its standards were not being met by Nahas. Following the Courage's 2-1 loss to Houston Dash on Friday night in Texas, the club clarified in a statement its reasons for his firing, citing 'confounding performance issues, culture issues, and a perceived lack of fit that created an environment that club leadership felt was untenable to the point that change was necessary at the head coaching position.' Yes, much clearer. Former assistant coach Nathan Thackeray was elevated to interim head coach following Nahas' departure and led the Courage against the Dash on Friday night. The Courage currently sits ninth in the NWSL standings, with a record of 5-4-6. For more on the situation and what it says about the league… Last week was another painful reminder that the NWSL still has issues around coaching changes and communication. Even considering the history of the NWSL, including Sally Yates' and NWSL/NWSLPA joint reports around the league's failure to stop abuse, the Courage's media strategy around Nahas' firing is probably one of the most bizarre I've seen. 'Multitude of factors' has become a meme, thanks to the dozen-plus mentions in that hostile first press conference. Advertisement On Friday, the Courage finally said that 'confounding performance issues, culture issues, and a perceived lack of fit' were the root of the issue two days after those first two sentences were posted to social media. It's unclear why those three factors, among the multitude, could not be named during the initial press conference. Public transparency is tough to navigate in this league when taking into consideration potential legal and privacy obstacles. 'Culture issues' is a rather anodyne catch-all, but it still says more than 'multitude of factors.' For a club that has had to rebuild a lot of trust with its supporters, this week didn't help the Courage nor the NWSL as a whole. Spain parts ways with another head coach Spain has moved on from head coach Montse Tome, appointing former player and Under-23 coach Sonia Bermúdez to replace her. The federation announced the change on Monday; however, The Athletic's Laia Cervello Herrero reports that the decision was made before the 2025 European Championship began. To get the latest on the reigning World Cup winner's coaching change, we asked our resident expert, Laia, for more: Why did Spain move on from Tome? 💬 She never gained the full support of the players or their trust, according to multiple sources. Tome was former head coach Jorge Vilda's assistant coach and was promoted when Vilda was dismissed amid an institutional crisis following the 2023 World Cup and former Spanish federation president Luis Rubiales' non-consensual kiss with Jennifer Hermoso. Tome applauded the speech of the former president before his firing, and although the rough edges were smoothed over, she never had the support of the team. The decision had been made before the Euros, according to sources, and Tome was going to be dismissed whether Spain won the competition or not. What will Tome be remembered most for during her time with Spain? 💬 Although she made history with the national team — winning the Nations League in 2024, being part of the coaching staff that won the World Cup in 2023, and taking Spain to its first-ever Euro final — she will pass without pain or glory. She was overshadowed by Vilda, even though she repeatedly tried to emphasize that she was not him. I have a feeling that Tome will be remembered more for applauding Rubiales' speech (although she later retracted her actions and explained that she felt obliged to do so) than for her sporting achievements. What do we know about her replacement? 💬 Bermúdez was the top scorer in FC Barcelona's history until Hermoso took the record from her, and then Alexia Putellas after that. She has since been coaching Spain's youth teams. The Spanish federation hopes she is someone the players respect and who knows how to manage the dressing room better than Tome. The problem is that the players have not forgotten that Bermúdez also applauded (and then retracted) Rubiales' speech. Golden list: The Ballon d'Or shortlist was released last week. The annual award, given to the year's best footballers by France Football magazine, includes the USWNT's Lindsey Heaps and Emily Fox, plus Marta and two-time winners Aitana Bonmati and Putellas. The Athletic's women's soccer writers explain which players deserve to win it this year. Advertisement A coaching hire: Denver Summit FC named Nick Cushing as its first head coach to lead the expansion team in its inaugural season next year. The 40-year-old previously spent time as the head coach of Manchester City Women in England and New York City FC in Major League Soccer. Cushing connected with Denver following his UK departure, telling The Athletic his new role 'was the right project' for him. Well, that's awkward: The Premier League, which kicks off on Friday, will feature in-game interviews with substituted players to provide more access. But a moment with Mallory Swanson during the Chicago Stars' 1-1 draw with Bay FC this weekend in NWSL could be a guide in what not to do. The Stars, who have just one win this season, are without Swanson as she prepares for the birth of her first child. She was present on Saturday, however, and gave an interview to CBS to promote her new Army clothing collaboration. Unfortunately for Swanson, it came at the exact moment that Bay scored the opening goal. The cameras then just stayed on Swanson. Boston Legacy FC sign midfielder Aleigh Gambone as inaugural roster takes shape
She began her professional career on short term deal with Danish Women's League club Fortuna Hjørring in 2022 prior to signing with Scottish Women's Premier League side Glasgow City F.C. in 2023. In Scotland, Gambone flourished. She Advertisement 'Aleigh joins the NWSL having gained valuable experience in Europe, both domestically and at the UEFA Women's Champions League level. She has a solid foundation to build on having experienced four years at UNC,' said Legacy FC general manager Domè Guasch in a club statement. The Kansas City Current are serious about investing in their future. A record-breaking deal for Hanson's Ally Sentnor is proof.
On Aug. 1, Sentnor, who grew up in Hanson, signed a contract with Kansas City, and in exchange, the Current will send $600,000 in intraleague transfer funds to Utah to be paid over the course of three years. The $600,000 is a record for an NWSL transfer, and ESPN reported Kansas City could send Utah up to an additional $100,000 in conditional performance add-ons in the future. Sentnor, who attended Thayer Academy before playing at the University of North Carolina, went to Utah with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NWSL Draft — the final draft before the league's new collective bargaining agreement abolished the practice. Advertisement She's one of the fastest-rising stars in women's soccer, having been named US Soccer's young female athlete of the year in 2024. The midfielder made her senior national team debut before her 21st birthday, totaling four goals and two assists in her first 12 appearances. Advertisement With the Royals sitting in last place in the NWSL (1-10-3, 6 points), Utah coach Jimmy Coenraets indicated Sentnor may have requested a trade. 'When a player wants to leave, there are not a lot of ways to keep a player,' Coenraets told local media, Sentnor's dissatisfaction may have been the opportunity the Current front office was looking for. The serendipitous timing of the transfer gives first-place Kansas City more flexibility in the midfield, particularly important given midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo The Current's Caitlin Carducci said during Sentnor's introductory press conference that she's in constant communication with fellow GMs around the league about potential trades, which was how Sentnor's name came up in transfer talks. 'If you're not constantly trying to get better in this league, you're going to get left behind,' Carducci said. 'We're not satisfied with where we are right now, we have really high ambitions, and so consistently looking around at talent, not only within the NWSL, but globally, is key for us.' After one-plus season in Utah, where she was named the club's Offensive Player of the Year and was one of three nominees for NWSL Rookie of the Year, Sentnor said upon arriving in Kansas City she was struck by the Current's professionalism — an indication that the investments made by co-owners Angie and Chris Long are setting the pace in the NWSL. '[The Longs] are constantly raising the bar for women's football across the globe as we sit in this wonderful building, and their continued dedication to making sure that this is the best women's football club in the world is always appreciated by all of us,' Carducci said from the Current's training facility. Advertisement Though Sentnor notched a goal and an assist in 13 matches with Utah this season, the former No. 1 pick's expectations for her team were loftier than the Royals could provide. 'We all have a timeline,' said Coenraets, the Utah coach. 'We all have goals and ambitions, and I think maybe we weren't at the right place to achieve hers.' Carducci will have to hope Kansas City's multimillion-dollar facility is the right place in which to nurture Sentnor's sky-high ambitions. 'I am expecting a trophy, just from all the hard work we're going to put in this season,' Sentnor said. 'It's so amazing to have that fight and be on a team that is fighting for that.
