The Kansas City Current are serious about investing in their future. A record-breaking deal for Hanson's Ally Sentnor is proof.

On Aug. 1, Sentnor, who grew up in Hanson, signed a contract with Kansas City, and in exchange, the Current will send $600,000 in intraleague transfer funds to Utah to be paid over the course of three years. The $600,000 is a record for an NWSL transfer, and ESPN reported Kansas City could send Utah up to an additional $100,000 in conditional performance add-ons in the future.
Sentnor, who attended Thayer Academy before playing at the University of North Carolina, went to Utah with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NWSL Draft — the final draft before the league's new collective bargaining agreement abolished the practice.

She's one of the fastest-rising stars in women's soccer, having been named US Soccer's young female athlete of the year in 2024. The midfielder made her senior national team debut before her 21st birthday, totaling four goals and two assists in her first 12 appearances.

With the Royals sitting in last place in the NWSL (1-10-3, 6 points), Utah coach Jimmy Coenraets indicated Sentnor may have requested a trade.
'When a player wants to leave, there are not a lot of ways to keep a player,' Coenraets told local media,
Sentnor's dissatisfaction may have been the opportunity the Current front office was looking for. The serendipitous timing of the transfer gives first-place Kansas City more flexibility in the midfield, particularly important given midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo
The Current's Caitlin Carducci said during Sentnor's introductory press conference that she's in constant communication with fellow GMs around the league about potential trades, which was how Sentnor's name came up in transfer talks.
'If you're not constantly trying to get better in this league, you're going to get left behind,' Carducci said. 'We're not satisfied with where we are right now, we have really high ambitions, and so consistently looking around at talent, not only within the NWSL, but globally, is key for us.'
After one-plus season in Utah, where she was named the club's Offensive Player of the Year and was one of three nominees for NWSL Rookie of the Year, Sentnor said upon arriving in Kansas City she was struck by the Current's professionalism — an indication that the investments made by co-owners Angie and Chris Long are setting the pace in the NWSL.
'[The Longs] are constantly raising the bar for women's football across the globe as we sit in this wonderful building, and their continued dedication to making sure that this is the best women's football club in the world is always appreciated by all of us,' Carducci said from the Current's training facility.

Though Sentnor notched a goal and an assist in 13 matches with Utah this season, the former No. 1 pick's expectations for her team were loftier than the Royals could provide.
'We all have a timeline,' said Coenraets, the Utah coach. 'We all have goals and ambitions, and I think maybe we weren't at the right place to achieve hers.'
Carducci will have to hope Kansas City's multimillion-dollar facility is the right place in which to nurture Sentnor's sky-high ambitions.
'I am expecting a trophy, just from all the hard work we're going to put in this season,' Sentnor said. 'It's so amazing to have that fight and be on a team that is fighting for that. 'It's definitely a mentality shift, but I'm really excited.'

Eagles superfan and musician vows to boycott shows in a rival city

One of county music's top stars turns his tour decisions into a loyalty statement. It isn't one of the game's traditional rivalries. The involved teams honestly haven't played each other enough to develop any genuine hatred. Last February's Philadelphia Eagles vs. Kansas City Chiefs matchup was only the twelfth time these proud organizations met on the field to play a football game. There is something brewing, though, and it isn't always friendly. No one should be shocked. Many rivalries have been born from two teams crossing one another's paths frequently during the postseason. Pro football consists of 32 teams. There are only 17 games played by every team each regular season. Every team plays its divisional rivals twice. No team plays every franchise. Thus, league officials developed a rotating schedule, so each organization will eventually play every other team. Long story short, Philadelphia and Kansas City are only scheduled to meet once every four years unless these two teams meet in a Super Bowl or finish with identical rankings in the conference standings (or both). As fate would have it, they've met in football's biggest game to conclude two of the past three seasons. We have seen how that has turned out. They've both come out on top once, and now, there's a little tension. Hey, don't blame the players and coaches. Blame two passionate fan bases. Eagles fan Zach Bryan won't be playing in Kansas City anytime soon. The Eagles and Chiefs share an iconic coach. Kansas City's players and fans weren't very respectful after winning Super Bowl LVII. Who can forget about JuJu Smith-Schuster sending James Bradberry a Valentine's Day card referencing 'holding'? Then, there was the Chiefs' victory parade. Kansas City's offensive linemen showed up with T-shirts referencing Philadelphia registering zero sacks, which in turn led to Lane Johnson mentioning that in his speech to his Eagles teammates before the big game this past February. Why do you think this team took so much pleasure in bludgeoning Patrick Mahomes? Now, one of the Birds' biggest fans has joined in. Country music star Zach Bryan took to X recently and asked, "Where are all the three-peat people from last year?' A Chiefs fan responded with some profanity. Bryan didn't back down, offering a jab of his own. 'Please understand I will never play in Kansas City.' See? Eagles vs. Chiefs may not be a natural rivalry, but it's a rivalry nonetheless. What can we say? Birds fans are different. Sometimes, passion drifts towards lunacy. No one likes them. They don't care. The bonds of loyalty are never broken. We enter 'Exhibit A' into evidence. Bryan's declaration is one every Eagles fan can respect and back with everything in them. Good for you, Mr. Bryan! Good for you!

Nationals series preview: Can the Royals hit bad pitching?

The Nationals play in a large market and won a championship as recently as 2019, but for the last five years they have operated like a poverty franchise. Their $111 million Opening Day payroll is less than what the small-market Royals paid, and a third of that goes to retired pitcher Stephen Strasburg. The rebuild has failed to produce many useful players, and they are well on their way to losing 90+ games for the fifth consecutive year. Washington Nationals (47-70) vs. Kansas City Royals (58-60) at Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, MO Nationals: 4.26 runs scored/game (20th in MLB), 5.48 runs allowed/game (29th) Royals: 3.68 runs scored/game (29th), 3.84 runs allowed/game (2nd) Only three teams have hit fewer home runs and drawn fewer walks than the Nationals (the Royals being one of them). The Nationals have an All-Star in James Wood, a blossoming young infielder in CJ Abrams, and not much else offensively. They are hoping catcher Keibert Ruiz and outfielder Dylan Crews will be part of their future, but both have been disappointing this year and are currently out with injuries. There is still some hope in third baseman Brady House and outfielder Robert Hassell III, but much of the rest of the roster is filled with stop-gaps. Veteran Josh Bell is hitting .333/.456/.512 over his last 25 games. He is a career 6-for-24 (.250) hitter with two home runs against Michael Wacha. CJ Abrams is hitting .304/.370/.593 with 12 of his 15 home runs on the road. Luis García Jr. became the second-youngest player to have six hits in a game when he did it in 2023 at Kauffman Stadium. Drew Millas is a .357 hitter against righties, but just .222 against lefties. Jacob Young is mired in a 4-for-40 (.100) slump. First baseman Nathaniel Lowe is hitting just .169/.235/.257 against lefties. Riley Adams has a 43 percent hard-hit rate, but he hits it into the ground 52 percent of the time. Brady House swings the bat 58 percent of the time, eighth-highest in baseball for anyone with 150 plate appearances. Robert Hassell III was the eighth overall pick of the 2020 draft by the Padres and is 7-for-18 (.389) with four doubles and a home run since his recall from the minors on August 1. The Nationals pitching staff has been awful, and they're on pace to give up a franchise record in runs allowed. Former first-round pick Cade Cavalli made his second career MLB start last week, striking out six in 4.1 scoreless innings. He made his MLB debut three years ago, but has had to recover from Tommy John surgery. He looked sharp in his return, throwing in the high-90s with a 50 percent whiff rate on his curve and 59 of his 88 pitches thrown for strikes. Mitchell Parker has allowed 32 runs in 31.1 innings over his last six starts. He has the lowest strikeout rate among qualified starters and the sixth-highest hard-hit rate. The road has not been kind to him – he has a 6.10 ERA away from DC. Opponents are hitting .300 off his curveball. Jake Irvin has the sixth-highest home run-to-flyball rate, second-highest contact rate, and the second-lowest swinging strike rate. He has given up 26 home runs, the second-most in baseball. Lefties are hitting .273/.334/.519 against him this season with 16 of those home runs. He has allowed 35 runs in 41.1 innings ove rhis last eight starts. The Nationals have by far the worst bullpen ERA in baseball at 5.84 with the second-worst strikeout rate. They traded away closer Kyle Finnegan in July, leaving Jose A. Ferrer to handle closing duties. Ferrer throws strikes, with the fifth-lowest walk rate, and his 59 percent groundball rate is tenth among relievers. Cole Hnry has the fourth-highest soft-hit rate and the fifth-highest pop-up rate among relievers. Jackson Rutledge has the third-highest home run rate among relievers. The Nats have lost 3 of 11, although they took two of three from the Giants on this road trip. They bring the worst pitching staff to town, although the Royals' lineup has a way of lowering opponents' ERAs. But if this team is going to make a run, winning, or even sweeping the series is imperative.
