Nationals series preview: Can the Royals hit bad pitching?

Yahooa day ago
The Nationals play in a large market and won a championship as recently as 2019, but for the last five years they have operated like a poverty franchise. Their $111 million Opening Day payroll is less than what the small-market Royals paid, and a third of that goes to retired pitcher Stephen Strasburg. The rebuild has failed to produce many useful players, and they are well on their way to losing 90+ games for the fifth consecutive year.
Washington Nationals (47-70) vs. Kansas City Royals (58-60) at Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, MO
Nationals: 4.26 runs scored/game (20th in MLB), 5.48 runs allowed/game (29th)
Royals: 3.68 runs scored/game (29th), 3.84 runs allowed/game (2nd)
Only three teams have hit fewer home runs and drawn fewer walks than the Nationals (the Royals being one of them). The Nationals have an All-Star in James Wood, a blossoming young infielder in CJ Abrams, and not much else offensively. They are hoping catcher Keibert Ruiz and outfielder Dylan Crews will be part of their future, but both have been disappointing this year and are currently out with injuries. There is still some hope in third baseman Brady House and outfielder Robert Hassell III, but much of the rest of the roster is filled with stop-gaps.
Veteran Josh Bell is hitting .333/.456/.512 over his last 25 games. He is a career 6-for-24 (.250) hitter with two home runs against Michael Wacha. CJ Abrams is hitting .304/.370/.593 with 12 of his 15 home runs on the road. Luis García Jr. became the second-youngest player to have six hits in a game when he did it in 2023 at Kauffman Stadium. Drew Millas is a .357 hitter against righties, but just .222 against lefties.
Jacob Young is mired in a 4-for-40 (.100) slump. First baseman Nathaniel Lowe is hitting just .169/.235/.257 against lefties. Riley Adams has a 43 percent hard-hit rate, but he hits it into the ground 52 percent of the time. Brady House swings the bat 58 percent of the time, eighth-highest in baseball for anyone with 150 plate appearances. Robert Hassell III was the eighth overall pick of the 2020 draft by the Padres and is 7-for-18 (.389) with four doubles and a home run since his recall from the minors on August 1.
The Nationals pitching staff has been awful, and they're on pace to give up a franchise record in runs allowed. Former first-round pick Cade Cavalli made his second career MLB start last week, striking out six in 4.1 scoreless innings. He made his MLB debut three years ago, but has had to recover from Tommy John surgery. He looked sharp in his return, throwing in the high-90s with a 50 percent whiff rate on his curve and 59 of his 88 pitches thrown for strikes.
Mitchell Parker has allowed 32 runs in 31.1 innings over his last six starts. He has the lowest strikeout rate among qualified starters and the sixth-highest hard-hit rate. The road has not been kind to him – he has a 6.10 ERA away from DC. Opponents are hitting .300 off his curveball.
Jake Irvin has the sixth-highest home run-to-flyball rate, second-highest contact rate, and the second-lowest swinging strike rate. He has given up 26 home runs, the second-most in baseball. Lefties are hitting .273/.334/.519 against him this season with 16 of those home runs. He has allowed 35 runs in 41.1 innings ove rhis last eight starts.
The Nationals have by far the worst bullpen ERA in baseball at 5.84 with the second-worst strikeout rate. They traded away closer Kyle Finnegan in July, leaving Jose A. Ferrer to handle closing duties. Ferrer throws strikes, with the fifth-lowest walk rate, and his 59 percent groundball rate is tenth among relievers. Cole Hnry has the fourth-highest soft-hit rate and the fifth-highest pop-up rate among relievers. Jackson Rutledge has the third-highest home run rate among relievers.
The Nats have lost 3 of 11, although they took two of three from the Giants on this road trip. They bring the worst pitching staff to town, although the Royals' lineup has a way of lowering opponents' ERAs. But if this team is going to make a run, winning, or even sweeping the series is imperative.

Restored ‘Terrible Trolley' honoring Steelers' 4 1970s Super Bowl wins now on display

One of the most popular and recognizable streetcars in the Pittsburgh area has been returned to its full glory. On Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum celebrated the restoration of The Terrible Trolley, a Port Authority (now Pittsburgh Regional Transit) streetcar that was painted to celebrate the Steelers' four Super Bowl Championships in the 1970s. It subsequently became a popular symbol of Pittsburgh's claim as 'The City of Champions" through the 1980s. But after the iconic streetcar was retired, it was sold and sat inside in Ohio for 25 years. That is, until the Pittsburgh Trolley Museum acquired it in 2023. 'The Terrible Trolley represents the Pittsburgh region's pride in their beloved sports team. We are excited to present this beautifully restored and nostalgic streetcar to our community,' Executive Director & CEO, Jeanine DeBor said. 'We are extremely proud of the hard work and dedication our paid and volunteer staff devoted to this project.' The museum partnered with the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency to restore the trolley to full operation and relocate it to Washington County. 'We were proud to partner with the PA Trolley Museum to not only provide a majority of the funds to refurbish the Terrible Trolley, but to secure its relocation to Washington County for everyone to enjoy,' said Jeff Kotula, with the Washington County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Promotion Agency. 'In addition, with the NFL Draft coming to Pittsburgh in 2026, the Terrible Trolley will be a tourism draw to Washington County to those visiting our region from all over the United States during the draft.' Steelers' Aaron Rodgers still frustrated with new helmet, says 'it looks like a damn spaceship'

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was asked Tuesday about him walking off the field in Jacksonville after last week's preseason opener alongside 30-year-old edge rusher T.J. Watt and 36-year-old defensive tackle Cam Heyward. The 41-year-old Rodgers said, at this point of his career, he "gravitates toward the old heads." In a much more literal sense, the same is true about Rodgers' affinity for the old Schutt helmet he wore for several years but is now banned by the NFL. The Schutt Air XP Pro Q11 LTD didn't meet the league's new safety standards, so Rodgers has been practicing in the Schutt Air XP Pro VTD II. To say he's ticked off about the wardrobe change would be an understatement. "I don't like it, no," Rodgers said Tuesday, per ESPN. "I'm trying to change. We're in the process still. It looks like a damn spaceship out there." Rodgers added: "We got to change it. The face mask doesn't fit the helmet because that's an old face mask, obviously just like I'm old, but we're trying to find the right helmet right now." Rodgers, known for sticking with a cloth, two-point chinstrap throughout his career despite equipment advances, first complained about the helmet in June at mandatory minicamp, not long after he signed with the Steelers on a one-year deal. The four-time league MVP hasn't tested his new helmet in a game yet. Rodgers, like several other seasoned starters on Pittsburgh's roster, didn't play against the Jaguars this past Saturday. Even if Rodgers doesn't suit up for a preseason game this year, he's still going to get some meaningful reps against an opposing team before Week 1. That's because the Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are holding a joint practice Thursday, two days prior to their exhibition in Acrisure Stadium. "It's good to go against a different team [because] ... you get a chance to go against not-vanilla defenses,' Rodgers said Tuesday, per The Associated Press. "So hopefully [Tampa Bay head coach] Todd [Bowles], he probably won't show everything, but he'll do some stuff to stress our protection and give us a chance to get some film to work on."

Shapiro declines comment on contract talks but says he wants to remain with Blue Jays

TORONTO — Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro declined to comment on contract extension talks Tuesday but said he wants to remain with the club and that team ownership has been "reciprocal in that desire." Shapiro, who also serves as chief executive officer, is in the final year of his contract. "When I think about alternatives, I've never been a grass is greener guy," he said in a pre-game availability. "Twenty-four years in one place in Cleveland and 10 years here now. "So it's the appreciation for what I have and the people that I get to work with every day, the city that I work in and the country that I live in, those things are drivers for me to remain here." Shapiro, 58, joined the club in 2015 and signed a five-year extension in January 2021. He took questions from reporters for about 20 minutes in a rare in-season media session. Shapiro was asked directly whether there had been discussions with team owner Rogers Communications on a new deal. "Sure, yeah, I mean I think (it's) not appropriate for me to comment beyond the fact that what I just said is I want to remain here," Shapiro said. "And I can also say that both (Rogers executive chair) Edward (Rogers) and (Rogers president/CEO) Tony (Staffieri) have been reciprocal in that desire." It has been a worst-to-first campaign for Canada's lone Major League Baseball team. The Blue Jays finished last in the American League East division standings last season but have enjoyed a stellar season in 2025. Toronto entered Tuesday night's game against the visiting Chicago Cubs with the best record in the AL at 69-50. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 12, 2025.
