He played for the Jets and Philadelphia Eagles, and was one of the most effective pass-rushers of his era. Philbin's career spanned the AFL-NFL merger, starting with the Jets in the 1960s and ending with the Eagles in the 1970s.
He produced 66.5 sacks over 10 seasons, with 65 coming with the Jets. His sack total still ranks fourth in franchise history.
Philbin's career highlight came in 1968 when he had 14 sacks and helped lead the Jets to the historic upset of the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. He went into the Jets Hall of Fame in 2011.
"The impact of the (Super Bowl) win was huge," he said during his induction ceremony. The impact was so great that finally, the AFL was on par with the NFL. It really meant so much to the players around the league in the AFL because we were really second-class citizens up until the time the Jets won in the Super Bowl. Because prior to that there were two Super Bowls where the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders got beat pretty good by the NFL (Green Bay Packers)."

"So, it really was the impact of the game more or less for the players in the AFL and the fans around the country in the AFL cities. That's what my biggest thrill was. That and to go home and be No. 1 in New York is another good reason."
He finished his career with the Eagles in 1973 and in 1974 for the New York Stars of the World Football League. Philbin was also voted onto the AFL's all-time team in 1970.
Philbin started a sand and gravel business in Long Island, New York after retiring. He then went into real estate, moved to New Hampshire for a time, and ultimately moved to Florida to be close to his family.

Kansas City Chiefs' star Patrick Mahomes has captured the spotlight unlike most players have to this point in his career, but a quarterback in the discussion for the best in NFL history currently sits behind three rival players in Chris Simms' latest rankings. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Patrick Mahomes has become a symbol of excellence rarely seen in the NFL. Because of his ability, the Kansas City Chiefs have maintained a near decade long reign over the AFC West and won three Super Bowls in an eight-year span. Advertisement Mahomes high rate of achievement has raised the standard for him into rarified air. Unlike his peers, Mahomes is compared in the bigger to the league's all-time greats, including future Hall of Famer Tom Brady. While he and the Chiefs have a seemingly inevitable winning formula, NFL analyst Chris Simms believes Mahomes' play has taken a slight dip in recent seasons. That has been enough for him to drop the Kansas City quarterback to the No. 4 spot in his current rankings of professional quarterbacks. 'He's mastered winning,' he said on Tuesday. 'He's the ultimate winner. And I know some people are going to say, 'Isn't that the only point? To win?' "Winning is not a quarterback stat. I know we like to put it there — and I take it there and take it into context — but it's not like, 'Oh, he wins, he's No. 1.'' Advertisement Simms believes that in terms of performance Joe Burrow, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson have all been better. '[He's] the man, the myth [and] the legend,' declared Simms. '[He's] one of the greatest I've ever seen — and maybe the clutchiest quarterback in football. Still, the quarterback play week-in and week-out — and I don't think he would disagree with me here — has not been as high level the past two seasons as [it has for been for] Burrow, Lamar or Josh Allen.' The final two on that list makeup the last two NFL MVP winners. On one side, it's hard to claim the title as the best when these quarterbacks maintain such a high level of play. However, Mahomes maintains a leg up on them. Neither of the three have been able to top Mahomes in the playoffs the last three seasons. In fact, Allen has gotten multiple chances and come up fruitless each time. Advertisement It is certainly an impressive feat that Mahomes continues to find ways to outshine this level of competition each year to remain atop the AFC. Lately, that has come despite suboptimal performances on his part. Heading into 2025, Mahomes and the Chiefs know full well they will need the best from him as each of the three will be loading up for their chance to dethrone Mahomes and end his decorated reign. Keelon Russell Credits 7-Time Super Bowl-Winning QB as Inspiration

Keelon Russell Credits 7-Time Super Bowl-Winning QB as Inspiration originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Alabama Crimson Tide football program knows a thing or two about winning. Since hiring Nick Saban as their head coach in 2007, Alabama boasts a remarkable 215-33 record, with 24 bowl appearances and an even more impressive six national championships. Advertisement In comparison, the only team in modern sports that comes close to Alabama's run of dominance is the New England Patriots of the past two and a half decades. In that span, the AFC East club has secured six Super Bowls wins. Notably, their quarterback, Tom Brady, left New England and went on to collect a seventh Super Bowl victory with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "A coach told me Tom would study film all night and sleep in the film room. That's one of the things that I take away from him," said Russell during an interview with Men's Health Magazine. Advertisement Russell is on the cover of the next Men's Health Magazine edition, with the catalog pushing a campaign towards "Gen Z," according to Charlie Potter of On3. Russell also pointed at Brady's unique NFL journey as motivation. A sixth-round pick in 2000, Brady stepped in for the Patriots after an injury to starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe. Brady would lead the Pats to an 11-3 regular season record before embarking on an undefeated postseason and his first Super Bowl victory. Brady never looked back, winning five more championships with New England before snagging a seventh ring with the Bucs in 2020. As for Russell, he will join Alabama this fall as one of their highest recruits in program history. He will likely serve as a backup to fellow passer Ty Simpson in year one, but head coach Kalen DeBoer could look to play Russell in certain packages. Chiefs Urged To Consider Kyle Pitts Trade As Travis Kelce Successor

Chiefs Urged To Consider Kyle Pitts Trade As Travis Kelce Successor originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kanas City Chiefs have one of the best tight ends of all time in Travis Kelce, but this may be his final season in the NFL, as he is about to turn 36 years old. Advertisement So now is as good of a time as ever to start looking for his successor. In a recent video posted by Bleacher Report, Mitch Milani puts together 10 blockbuster trades for the Chiefs to make that would help get Patrick Mahouts his fourth ring. One of the deals he proposes would have the Chiefs sending a few late-round picks in 2026 to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for young tight end Kyle Pitts. "Falcons fans would even agree that Kyle Pitts has been poorly treated and poorly utilized," Milani said. "So why not give him to a team with Andy Reid that has used Travis Kelce magnificently?" The Falcons selected Pitts out of Florida with the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, which made him the highest-drafted tight end in history. But his career so far has not been exactly what Atlanta thought it would be. Advertisement In 2024, Pitts finished with a fairly disappointing 602 receiving yards and four touchdowns, which on the bright side, is the most he has been to the end zone in a season so far. But many think this is not Pitt's fault, as the Falcons have not utilized his skills at the tight end position very well. If there is someone that knows how to incorporate a star tight end into an offense, it is Andy Reid. As a result, the reigning AFC champions could consider looking into a trade for Pitts going into the 2025 season.
