Jets ‘Ring of Honor' DE Gerry Philbin dies at 83
June 26 - Gerry Philbin, a member of the New York Jets' Super Bowl III championship team and a two-time All-Pro over a 10-year career, has died at the age of 83, the Jets announced Wednesday. The former defensive end was first-team All-Pro in 1968 and '69, and also named to the Pro Bowl those two seasons. With Philbin hunting quarterbacks and Joe Namath making guarantees, the Jets famously upset the Baltimore Colts for a surprise Super Bowl championship at the conclusion of the 1968 season. "I really believe he should've been a Hall of Famer," teammate and linebacker Ralph Baker said. "He was just a good guy, a regular guy who worked hard and shared his feelings. When teammates needed to be set straight, Gerry was the guy to do it." A third-round (19th overall) draft pick out of Buffalo, Philbin termed himself undersized at 6-foot-2 and 245 pounds. Despite his smaller size, over 123 games (112 starts) in New York and Philadelphia, where he played his final year, Philbin record 66 1/2 sacks and seven fumble recoveries. No. 81 was named to the AFL's all-decade team for the 1960s and later inducted into New York's Ring of Honor. "I got the most out of how hard I worked, because I was a little disadvantaged with size and overcame it," Philbin told in 2018. "And then just accomplishing most of my goals that I set. I wanted to be an All-Star. I wanted to win the Super Bowl. "And the personal goals of getting elected to the All-Time AFL Team. And then finally, becoming a Ring of Honor recipient with the Jets. All those things I cherish a lot." --Field Level Media

Beloved NFL Super Bowl Champion Dead At 83
Beloved NFL Super Bowl Champion Dead At 83 originally appeared on The Spun. The football world is in mourning today as one of the best pass rushers of the AFL-NFL rivalry years and a beloved Super Bowl champion has passed away. Advertisement On Wednesday, numerous outlets reported that former New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Gerry Philbin passed away. He was 83 years old. Philbin was a star pass rusher for the New York Jets in the 1960s, racking up 66.5 sacks over 10 seasons in the AFL and later the NFL following the AFL-NFL merger. 65 of those sacks came with the Jets, though 48.5 of them came between 1966 and 1969. His sacks mark still ranks fourth in franchise history. In 1968, Philbin enjoyed a career-high 14.0 sacks and became a defensive anchor for the Jets as they went on to win Super Bowl III in the biggest upset in NFL history. He would finish his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1973 and play his final season of pro football with the New York Stars in the short-lived WFL in 1974. Philbin was voted to the American Football League All-Time Team in 1970 after the league merged with the NFL. And while Canton never came calling, Philbin was inducted into the Jets' Ring of Honor in 2011. In an interview with the Jets in 2018, Philbin reflected on the impact of the Jets' Super Bowl win. He felt that it was an extremely vindicating moment for his career and the careers of his AFL friends. Advertisement "The impact of the win," Philbin said. "The impact was so great that finally, the AFL was on par with the NFL. It really meant so much to the players around the league in the AFL because we were really second-class citizens up until the time the Jets won in the Super Bowl. Because prior to that there were two Super Bowls where the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders got beat pretty good by the NFL (Green Bay Packers). "So, it really was the impact of the game more or less for the players in the AFL and the fans around the country in the AFL cities. That's what my biggest thrill was. That and to go home and be No. 1 in New York is another good reason." He then went into real estate, moved to New Hampshire for a time and then moved to Florida to be close to his family. Advertisement "I've been retired for the last 15, 20 years. I had a business on Long Island for many years, a sand and gravel business," he said. "And then I sold that and my home and moved to Florida and became a real estate agent. I was in the real estate business for a while and then moved to New Hampshire. But my kids were living in Florida at the time, so I moved back and have since stayed, and I'm here now." Our hearts go out to Philbin's family and loved ones. At 6-foot-2, 245 pounds, he went on to win a Super Bowl with Gang Green in 1969 when they defeated the Baltimore Colts 16-7. Philbin was also inducted into the team's Ring of Honor in 2011, and earned two Pro Bowl and All-Pro nods in his career, along with being named to the all-time AFL team. 'I do remember when we played the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoff game [after the 1969 season] — he had a separated shoulder,' said John Schmitt, a Jets center from 1964-1974, on Wednesday, per the Jets. 'They made up a leather harness that was a half-inch thick that was wrapped around his chest, and they had chain-link fence holding the leather arm piece to the chest piece. You never saw such a barbaric thing. And he played the whole game against Kansas City. … He was a damn tough player and I loved the man.' Advertisement Former head coach Rex Ryan also released a statement after Philbin's passing. 'When you talk about a relentless motor and that Jet mentality, that was Gerry Philbin,' said Ryan, who has Philbin listed as one of his three all-time favorite Jets from that team. 3 Gerry Philbin #81 of the New York Jets pursues quarterback Bob Griese #12 of the Miami Dolphins during an AFL football game at Shea Stadium October 10, 1970 in the Queens borough of New York City. BREAKING NEWS Super Bowl winner and New York Jets legend Gerry Philbin dead at 83
The New York Jets have announced the death of legendary defensive end Gerry Philbin at the age of 83. Philbin was on the team that won the Super Bowl with the Jets in 1969, so far the only title in the history of the organization. In a statement announcing his passing, the Jets described Philbin as 'the undersized, big-hearted, highly productive and well-decorated defensive end' for the team. At 6ft 2, Philbin was considered short for his position but natural ability covered anything he lacked in height. He told the Jets in 2018: 'I got the most out of how hard I worked, because I was a little disadvantaged with size and overcame it. 'I wanted to be an All-Star. I wanted to win the Super Bowl. And the personal goals of getting elected to the All-Time AFL Team. And then finally, becoming a Ring of Honor recipient with the Jets. All those things I cherish a lot.'
