Former NFL Veteran Dead Suddenly At 53
The football world lost yet another former defensive lineman in the span of several days.
Last week saw the passing of former All-Pro defensive end Gerry Philbin, who died at 83 and enjoyed prolific career as a member of the New York Jets from 1964-1972— and now a more recent D-lineman has also transitioned.

Over the weekend, ex-Steelers/Bengals DT Oliver Gibson reportedly passed away at the age of 53.
Gibson spent nine seasons in the NFL as a former fourth-round pick out of Notre Dame and was one of the more underrated pieces to those menacing "Blitzburgh" defenses of the '90s.
The Romeoville, IL native was named USA Today's High School Defensive Player of the Year and a Parade Magazine All-American back in 1989 before parlaying that into a scholarship to South Bend and a near-decade long professional career.
After his playing days, Gibson returned to his hometown where he took the head coaching job Romeoville High School starting in 2015.

Gibson appeared in 133 games with 57 starts across his nine years in the National Football League where he recorded 243 tackles, 17.5 sacks, 37 tackles for loss and batted down 10 passes.
The 304-pound defensive tackle was also a part of Pittsburgh's 1995 Super Bowl team as a rookie, an accomplishment he relayed to the youth from his home area when he arrived back at Romeoville.

'When I talk to the kids, I tell them that everything that they've been through, I've been through. And everywhere that you want to go from Romeoville, you can do it," Gibson said at the time.

As the countdown to the 2025 NFL season continues, the NFL Network is helping bridge that gap for fans by counting down the league's best players. As voted on by the players themselves, the NFL Top 100 offers a unique glimpse into how the league's best players view the stars of the NFL. While fans in South Beach were busy setting off fireworks and celebrating America's birthday, Dolphins fans had another reason to celebrate on the 4th of July. Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa made his way back onto the NFL Top 100. Tagovailoa passed for 2,867 yards and 19 touchdowns against just seven interceptions in his 11 games last season. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound quarterback recorded an average time to throw of 2.42 seconds last season, quickest in the NFL. Thanks to that lightning-fast release, Tagovailoa faced a league-low 22.1% pressure rate on his dropbacks. But, a concussion and a hip injury cost Tagovailoa six games last season as injury issues continue to plague the Dolphins' star signal-caller. That led to a 55-spot slide for Tagovailoa in the annual player rankings. Tagovailoa's tumble down the Top 100 has everything to do with his injury issues. Miami averaged 13.3 points and went 2-4 in games he didn't start compared to a 6-5 record and 24.1 points per game in starts he made. Tagovailoa posted a career-low 6.1 average depth of target, seemingly to reduce injury risk, but he was effective and deadly accurate even as the approach lowered Miami's previously sky-high ceiling. For all his talent, he finds himself in familiar territory, again needing to prove his durability. - Bobby Kownack, Tagovailoa completed 72.9% of his passes during the 2024 campaign to lead all NFL starting quarterbacks. As 2025 nears, Tagovailoa's ranking is an indication of the respect he has from his peers. But, it's also a dire reminder of the injury woes that have plagued Tagovailoa and the Dolphins.

The Cincinnati Bengals don't often come up in national praise, although the tides continue to shift during the Joe Burrow era, at least. There are some big exceptions, though. When it comes time to look at some of the biggest hits in franchise history, well, the Bengals have some best-ever candidates. While running down the best draft picks ever at every pick, ESPN's Ben Solak singled out the Bengals in the No. 55 slot for a guy named Andrew Whitworth: 'Whitworth played 239 games over 16 seasons (wow!), and he needed all 16 of those seasons to get his ring with the Rams. Whit worked his way into a dominant back half of his career, making his first Pro Bowl at 31 and first All-Pro team at 34. The Bengals, who drafted him, will appreciate him for his 11 seasons of quality play, and the Rams enjoyed his strong sunset.' Not far down the list from Whitworth? A guy named Ken Anderson at No. 67: 'A 16-year vet of the Bengals, Anderson's 1981 season won him an MVP and took Cincinnati to its first-ever Super Bowl. I strived to avoid overweighting quarterbacks in this exercise, but even without a positional value bump, Anderson still clears the value of Alvin Kamara, also taken at No. 67 overall and one of the best third-round picks ever.' Not a bad duo when thinking about all-time Bengals picks in the top 100 of drafts. There's still plenty of time for some of the modern guys like Burrow to start making their case for much more competitive slots higher up the all-time order, too. It's been tougher, more minutes, more pressure, and no deep playoff runs with Brooklyn or Phoenix. It's not a knock on him but just proof that those Warriors years were something special.
