Gerry Philbin, defensive end who helped Namath's New York Jets win Super Bowl, dies at 83

NEW YORK (AP) — Gerry Philbin, a defensive end who helped the New York Jets shock the Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl after the 1968 season, has died, the team announced Friday. He was 83.
The cause of death was dementia, Philbin's family told ESPN.
Philbin spent nine seasons with the Jets and was a two-time All-AFL selection.
In the third Super Bowl on Jan. 12, 1969, the Jets and quarterback Joe Namath brought legitimacy to the AFL and turned the game into a must-watch event when they beat the NFL champion Baltimore Colts 16-7. Philbin led a defense that forced five turnovers and held the Colts to their lowest point total of the season. The NFL and AFL merged in 1970.
A native of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Philbin was a three-year starter at the University of Buffalo and was selected by the Detroit Lions in the third round of the 1964 NFL draft. He chose to play for the AFL's Jets instead and played 110 games over nine seasons for New York from 1964-72.
Although sacks did not become an official statistic until 1982, the Jets credit Philbin with 64 1/2 sacks, the fourth most in franchise history. He became part of the Jets' Ring of Honor in 2011.
Philbin played his last season for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1973.

This relatively low score even surprised his fellow rookie teammate, offensive lineman Jackson Slater, who is reportedly rated a 75 overall. This rating may be shocking to some Titans fans, but it is important take a look at where rookie quarterbacks, especially those who were drafted first overall, have been rated in the past. Caleb Williams was drafted No. 1 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft and his rating was a 76 overall in Madden 25. For a player who was considered by some to be a generational quarterback, this was a surprisingly low rating. Advertisement Bryce Young, who was taken first overall in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers, was given an initial 74 rating. He was the highest-rated quarterback in that year's rookie class, but Young had an up-and-down rookie season. When Trevor Lawrence was drafted number one overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2021 NFL Draft, his rating started off at 78 overall. Ward is the lowest-rated of the four most recent number one overall quarterbacks. This may be understandable considering the hype that the other three garnered ahead of their first seasons, but there is something special about Ward as well. This rating may be puzzling considering the things Ward did on the field and the way he carried his offense at the University of Miami and the other stops along his journey. But, just like he always has, Ward will get the opportunity to prove he deserves better on the field. Madden is fictional, but what Ward can do on the field is real, and maybe EA Sports has to see him prove that at the professional level. The culture shift at Ohio-based HBCU Central State University is real-and it's happening fast. New head coach Tony Carter, a former NFL cornerback and Florida State standout, continues to stack a coaching staff that's as diverse as it is talented. His latest move? Making history by hiring Ashley Cornwell as the first female position coach in Central State football history. A Trailblazer With Serious Credentials Cornwell isn't here to check a box-she's here to coach. Her résumé is as legit as anyone on the field. She started her career at the University of Wisconsin, working across offense, defense, and special teams. While there, she helped recruit talent that produced six NFL draft picks and six more free-agent signees. Nearly all of them are still playing in the league. From there, Cornwell broke barriers at Bucknell. In 2024, she became the first female coach in Bucknell football history. She started as an Assistant Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Analyst. By August, she was promoted to Interim Tight Ends Coach and In-Game Management Coordinator. Before her most recent stop at Bucknell, she was the Offensive Line Coach at Oberlin College. But her impact stretches far beyond the college game. For two years, Cornwell coached in the NFL International Player Pathway Program, helping produce one draft pick (Travis Clayton) and five more players who made NFL rosters as undrafted free agents. NFL Ties and a Coaching Mindset Cornwell has also completed Bill Walsh Diversity Fellowships with the Titans, Buccaneers, and Commanders.
