The workshop aimed to help attendees identify the root causes of stress, develop emotional resilience, and adopt practical techniques to navigate life's challenges with calm.
Pratiba Daya, a senior member of the Brahma Kumaris, emphasised the importance of recognising stress triggers, many of which lie beyond an individual's control. She highlighted that while external challenges, including unemployment, rising alcoholism, and gender-based violence, weigh heavily on the community, individuals can still effect change within themselves. 'The workshop focused on building internal resilience and equipping people with coping tools they can cultivate within themselves. The key is transformation from within.

She emphasised that internal transformation creates a ripple effect, adding that when one person changes, it inspires others, ultimately impacting the wider community.
A key highlight of the workshop was a presentation by Brahma Kumaris member Busi Dlamini, who introduced the SOS technique – Stop, Observe, Steer – as a practical tool for managing distress.
Dlamini explained that reacting impulsively, or dwelling on uncontrollable circumstances, often exacerbates stress. 'Our thoughts shape our feelings, and our feelings determine our stress levels.' She explained that SOS helps one to pause, observe their thoughts, and steer them toward solutions within their control.

She elaborated that stopping allows individuals to prevent runaway thoughts from spiralling into stress, and it creates a space to focus on actionable solutions.
For attendees like Dolly Mafahle, an Ext 8 resident, the workshop was insightful. 'We're sick because of the challenges we face, but we didn't know that staying silent and applying the SOS rule could reduce our stress.
Now, we understand that fighting doesn't solve anything. We've learned something new today that can truly help us.'

GLOBAL CONTEXT AND FUTURE STEPS On 9 June 2025, the World Health Organisation reaffirmed that the mpox upsurge continues to constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) following the fourth meeting of the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee (IHREC). Furthermore, resource constraints threaten the sustainability of operations, impacting personnel and laboratory surveillance. The global funding requirement of $145 million (approximately R 2.56 billion) for the mpox response remains largely unmet. But did you know that tooth decay can actually be contagious? Yes, the bacteria behind cavities can spread between people even through something as ordinary (and affectionate) as a kiss. It sounds surprising, even a little unsettling, but experts say it's a real and common health issue. Let's unpack what this means for everyday life, why it happens, and what you can do to protect your smile and your loved ones' smiles, too. Tooth decay: it all starts with bacteria Cavities, also called dental caries, happen when certain bacteria in our mouths break down sugars and produce acid. Over time, this acid eats away at tooth enamel, creating holes. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus bacteria are the main culprits responsible for tooth decay. These bacteria live in dental plaque, thrive in sugary environments, and are the leading culprits in tooth decay. How do cavities become 'contagious'? While you can't catch a literal cavity from someone, you can catch the bacteria that cause it. The "Journal of Dental Research" explains: 'Tooth decay is an infectious disease, and the bacteria can spread through saliva.' Research from the Journal of Dental Research shows parents (especially mothers) often pass these cavity-causing bacteria to their children during infancy and toddler years, a process known as 'vertical transmission.' Will you get sick if you 'catch' these bacteria? Not necessarily, and this is where it gets interesting. Even if someone transfers Streptococcus mutans to you, whether you get cavities depends on other factors: Your oral hygiene habits (do you brush and floss regularly?) Why poor hygiene makes things worse If you don't brush twice a day and floss, plaque builds up on your teeth. This sticky film is the perfect home for bacteria to multiply. Once there's a higher concentration of bacteria in your mouth, you're not only at greater risk of tooth decay yourself, but also more likely to pass those bacteria on to others, your partner, kids, or even friends when sharing food. That's why dentists and health experts stress the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene to protect not just yourself, but the people around you. Every day, moments can unknowingly spread cavity-causing bacteria. What are the signs you might have cavities? At first, cavities might not hurt or show obvious signs. But early clues can include: Brown or black spots on teeth Small visible holes or 'pits' Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods Pain when biting down Dentists recommend regular check-ups so cavities can be caught before they get painful. Why it matters: Cavities are more than cosmetic Untreated cavities don't just mean fillings or cosmetic concerns. More patients helped with free cancer screenings at west hospital The Pretoria West Hospital was recently visited by The Pink Drive, which was offering free cancer screenings. This was a follow-up on their visit last year, once again promoting a vital campaign that focuses on bringing cancer screening services to communities served by hospitals that lack in-house mammography facilities. Stephina Ramabulana, head of the hospital's X-ray Department, said, 'Last year's visit saw overwhelming demand for mammograms, with only a limited number of patients able to be screened. 'Learning from that experience, the Pink Drive team returned better equipped this year, significantly increasing the number of patients they were able to assist, much to the benefit of the community.' The Pink Drive initiative offers comprehensive cancer screening, including: – Mammograms for early detection of breast cancer – Breast self-examinations – Pap smears for cervical cancer – PSA tests for prostate screening. 'We are also deeply thankful for the collaboration with colleagues from the district health team under the maternal, child and women's health program (MCWH), who came to stand with us and assist as staff during the campaign. 'Their support played a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of the screening process and in managing the increased patient turnout,' Ramabulana continued. She said that the hospital is truly grateful for the continued partnership with the Pink Drive team, the MCWH programme, and all involved stakeholders. She added that the hospital sincerely hopes this collaboration becomes an annual tradition, allowing more patients the opportunity for early detection and timely intervention. 'This initiative is a remarkable collaboration that extends vital healthcare access not only to residents of Pretoria West but also to surrounding clinics and communities. 'As the Head of the X-ray Unit at Pretoria West Hospital, I find it incredibly rewarding to witness patients expressing heartfelt gratitude and encouraging us to continue these efforts.
