New EPFO Rule: No UAN Without Aadhaar Face Scan. What You Must Know Now

NDTV2 days ago
In a significant move towards digital empowerment, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced a new method for generating and activating the Universal Account Number (UAN). Effective from August 1, 2025, employees can now generate their UAN directly through the UMANG App using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology-without needing to approach their employer.
This change was announced in an official EPFO circular dated July 30, 2025, which stated that the traditional method of UAN generation through employers will only continue for international workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan.
What's New?
EPFO has now made three services available on the UMANG App using
Face Authentication Technology:
UAN Allotment and Activation - For those who don't have a UAN.
UAN Activation - For those who already have a UAN but haven't activated it.
Face Authentication for Activated UANs - For updating EPFO records via Aadhaar.
Step-by-Step: How to Create or Activate UAN
To Create a New UAN:
Download and open the UMANG App.
Select "UAN Allotment and Activation".
Enter your Aadhaar number and mobile number.
Give consent and send the OTP.
Install Aadhaar Face RD App, if not already installed.
Complete Face Authentication.
If your Aadhaar isn't linked to any UAN, a new UAN will be generated and sent via SMS.
To Activate an Existing UAN:
Go to "UAN Activation" on the UMANG App.
Enter your UAN, Aadhaar number, and mobile number.
Consent and send OTP.
Complete face scan for verification.
A temporary password will be sent by SMS, and your UAN will be activated.
To Update EPFO Records with Face Authentication:
Use the "Face Authentication of Already Activated UANs" option to verify your Aadhaar and update records directly in the EPFO system.
Benefits of the New System:
No need to contact employer for UAN generation.
Quick, secure process through Aadhaar verification.
Access to EPFO services instantly - such as passbook viewing, KYC updates, and claim submission.
Photo and address update directly from Aadhaar.
Need Help?
Contact the UMANG App Helpdesk or EPFO Customer Support for any technical issues. This update is a major step forward in making employee services more accessible and efficient, supporting the government's goal of full digitalization.

US tariffs impact: What will get expensive after Trump's 50% hike and who will pay?

'India is ready for it': PM Narendra Modi after Donald Trump tariff hit, backs farmers' interestThe first tranche of 25 per cent tariffs announced by United States President Donald Trump came into effect on Thursday, August 7. This will double by August 27, when the additional 25 per cent tariffs announced by Trump, as a penalty for purchasing oil from Russia, also come into effect, making the total US tariffs on India a whopping 50 per cent. The additional 25 per cent tariffs on India imposed by US President Donald Trump as punishment for purchasing oil from Russia will come into effect on August 27. (File/AFP) With the imposition of 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports to the US, sectors such as leather, chemicals, footwear, gems and jewellery, textiles and shrimp are among those which will be severely affected, reported PTI, citing industry experts. Also read: 'India is ready for it': PM Narendra Modi after Donald Trump tariff hit, backs farmers' interest Due to such high tariffs, the Indian goods in the US will become much more expensive, which would lead to a nearly half-slash in US exports, according to the think tank GTRI. 'The tariffs are expected to make Indian goods far costlier in the US, with potential to cut US-bound exports by 40–50 per cent," GTRI said. Which sectors will be severely affected? The newly announced 50 per cent US tariffs are in addition to the existing standard import duty in the US. According to GTRI, some Indian products that will now face high US export duties include: Organic chemicals - 54% total duty Carpets - 52.9% Knitted clothes - 63.9% Woven clothes - 60.3% Textiles, made ups - 59% Diamonds, gold - 52.1% Machinery and mechanical appliances - 51.3% Furniture, bedding, mattresses – 52.3% In the last fiscal year, India and the US had a bilateral trade of $131.8 billion, of which $86.5 billion were in exports and $45.3 billion in imports, the PTI report said. What experts say According to Yogesh Gupta, MD of Kolkata-based seafood exporter Megaa Moda, the new tariffs will significantly increase the prices of India's shrimp in the US market. Also read: 'India must retaliate': Shashi Tharoor says 'hidden message' in US tariffs, cites China's oil purchases "We are already facing huge competition from Ecuador as it has only 15 per cent tariff. Indian shrimp already attracts a 2.49 per cent anti-dumping duty and a 5.77 per cent countervailing duty. After this 25 per cent, the duty will be 33.26 per cent from August 7," PTI quoted him as saying. The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) also expressed concern about the impacts of 50% US tariffs on Indian textiles exporters, as it is one of India's largest markets for exports in this sector. "The US tariff announcement of August 6 is a huge setback for India's textile and apparel exporters as it has further complicated the challenging situation we were already grappling with and will significantly weaken our ability to compete effectively vis-à-vis many other countries for a larger share of the US market," it said. According to Kama Jewelry's MD Colin Shah, the tariffs will come as a big blow directly to about 55% of India's shipments to the US. He said that the 50% tariff puts Indian exporters at a 30–35% disadvantage compared to exporters from other countries who face lower duties. "Many export orders have already been put on hold as buyers reassess sourcing decisions in light of higher landed costs. For a large number of MSME-led sectors, absorbing this sudden cost escalation is simply not viable. Margins are already thin, and this additional blow could force exporters to lose long-standing clients," he said. (With PTI inputs)

More than 1,000 United Airlines flights delayed in the US due to technology problem

A technology issue prompted United Airlines to ground planes at major U.S. airports on Wednesday and more than 1,000 flights were delayed. The impacted system, called Unimatic, houses flight information that is fed to other systems including those that calculate weight and balance and track flight times, according to United. It's not clear what caused the problem, which was resolved late Wednesday, though some service disruptions continued into Thursday. An alert on the Federal Aviation Administration website said all United flights destined for Chicago were halted at their departing airports. Flights to United hubs at Denver, Newark, Houston and San Francisco airports were also affected. "Safety is our top priority, and we'll work with our customers to get them to their destinations," an emailed statement from the Chicago-based airline said. The system outage, as the company described it, lasted several hours, the statement said. It wasn't related to recent concerns about airline industry cybersecurity. About 35% of all the airline's flights were delayed and another 6% were canceled Wednesday, according to FlightAware, a website that tracks flight disruptions.
