I'm desperate to lose my virginity but have a panic attack whenever I come close

Metro21-06-2025

Virginity may be a social construct, but having sex for the first time can still feel like a huge deal.
Often, people are nervous the reality of 'losing it' will be disappointing after building it up in their minds as a life-affirming moment. But for this week's reader, it's far more than a case of the butterflies.
Despite the fact she wants to sleep with her boyfriend, her anxiety levels spike whenever they're physically intimate — and she's starting to worry it'll never happen.
Read the advice below, but don't forget to check out last week's Sex Column too, from a man who dumped his girlfriend for being too 'vanilla' but is now struggling to perform with his adventurous new lover.
I've been seeing the same guy for nearly six months, so you'd assume that we'd have had sex by now. Unfortunately, that's not the case, as I am still a virgin and a bit freaked out about the idea of intercourse.
I'm a first-year student and met my boyfriend in the university bar. He's in the year above me and also took a gap year, so he's a little older and more experienced than me. From listening to him talk, he's had a few girlfriends and is sexually quite experienced, whereas I went to an all-girls school and have never had a boyfriend before.
I was also brought up in a religious household where sex before marriage is frowned upon, so he knows I'm still a virgin and says he's relaxed about it.
My boyfriend has admitted that some girls go for it on the first night, so he thinks it's quite amusing that I'm still holding out. He says he's happy to wait until I'm ready, but I wonder whether he'll give in to temptation if it comes along via another girl.

I would like to have sex with him at some point, but every time things get a bit passionate between us, I have an attack of nerves and refuse to go any further.
I'm really starting to think there's something wrong with me.
Honestly, there's nothing wrong with you. Being a virgin isn't something to be ashamed of, especially if it's just because you've made the decision that you want to lose your virginity to someone special. I'm sure there are lots of other people at your university who are virgins too, and never having had sex doesn't make you a freak.
However, if you're feeling conflicted because the decision is based on what you've been taught growing up, you would probably benefit from talking it through with a therapist. Time spent on a one-to-one basis with an expert can unravel all the complex emotions you feel about sex. In particular, counselling can help you resolve the separation between what feels good physically, yet feels bad emotionally.
There is clearly more to your relationship than just how you interact in a physical sense, so don't worry about your boyfriend being tempted elsewhere. It's very evident that he wants to be with you for many more reasons than sex. More Trending
You've said you would like to have sex with your boyfriend, so just remember that the act of making love is nothing to be afraid of and there's a first time for everyone. Meanwhile, there are many kinds of sexual activity to explore, and you don't have to go the whole way until you're ready for it.
Sex can be an expression of love, and if your partner is genuinely understanding and kind, he will take pride in making your first time as special as possible. Waiting a while won't harm your relationship, and a great love life will just add to what you already have together.

EastEnders confirms passion for Callum and Johnny as sparks fly

Sparks fly for Callum Highway (Tony Clay) and Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff) in EastEnders next week as one thing leads to another for the two characters after a passionate kiss. This isn't the first time that the BBC One soap has toyed with the idea of a romance involving these two, with Johnny having kissed Callum last year during what proved to be particularly traumatic time for him. Callum, who had been offering support and guidance amid Linda's (Kellie Bright) relapse, pulled away after a moment and reiterated that – despite Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) being behind bars – he is still committed to his husband. Johnny has since embarked on a relationship with Felix Baker (Matthew Morrison), with the pair intent on moving in together during this week's episodes, which came as quite a shock to Callum. Later in the week, Johnny spends some time in Callum's company, which surprises Felix. And it turns out that Felix is right to be concerned as Johnny and Callum subsequently share a kiss. What happens next remains to be seen but what we can tell you is that Felix ultimately finds out about the kiss and leaves boss Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) in the lurch in the aftermath. Cindy is dismayed and thus takes her frustrations out on Johnny and Callum, berating them in a showdown which is witnessed by Lexi Pearce (Isabelle Brown). Confused, Lexi demands answers, with Callum promising his daughter that there is nothing is going on between he and Johnny. Determined to ensure this is actually the case, Callum makes a beeline for the Vic, where he informs Johnny that they can only be friends. However, one thing ultimately leads to another and they share a kiss – before taking things further. They spend the night together. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Afterwards, Callum is riddled with guilt and, feeling like he has betrayed Ben, he tells Johnny they cannot be together. The question is: Is this really the end of the pair's dalliance? Is it just the beginning of something more? Or will Callum reiterate that Ben Mitchell is still his one and only? Ben, as viewers know, was jailed last March, shortly after he was arrested for committing fraud during a trip to the US. He shared a final heart-to-heart with husband Callum while behind bars before being extradited back to America, where he has been serving his sentence. More Trending Callum has visited him on a number of occasions and repeatedly dispelled the prospect of moving on without Ben. But will the connection between he and Johnny be too strong to resist? It has been reported that Ben is set to stage a short comeback later this year with star Max Bowden reprising his iconic role, though the way in which this will come to light remains to be seen. However, it does begs the question of just how will Ben react if he learns about Callum and Johnny's night together? Coronation Street confirms new woman by Gary's side as the truth is revealed

Worries have been mounting for Gary Windass (Mikey North) as he's been absent from Coronation Street for a while – and Maria (Samia Longchambon) has hardly heard from him. Gary went off in a bit of a strop after he and Maria argued over Lou Michaelis (Farrel Hegarty). When Lou's husband Mick (Joe Layton) was arrested for the murder of Craig Tinker (Colson Smith), Gary was one of the few people who had any time for Lou. This infuriated Maria, especially after she'd had a few run-ins with Lou herself. At one point she thought Lou had had her arrested after an accident at the Platts' barbecue, and she generally thought of Lou as a troublemaker and someone who had designs on Gary. She wasn't far wrong on that score, as we saw Lou try to kiss Gary. He rejected her advances, but scheming Lou also sent herself a text from Gary's phone that would look like clear evidence they were having an affair – though so far Maria hasn't seen this. She'd seen enough, however, to be seriously annoyed. Gary decided it would be sensible to go away and visit his mum for a while and let things cool down. In his absence Maria has been checking her phone constantly, worrying that she's pushed Gary too far with her jealousy. In upcoming episodes it's Liam (Charlie Wrenshall)'s birthday, and there's still no word from Gary. This is obviously unsettling, as even if he has the sulks with Maria he surely wouldn't forget Liam's big day. The reason for his continued silence was revealed – he's in hospital in a coma, and things are not looking good. Maria decides to report Gary as a missing person and heads to the police station. Kit (Jacob Roberts)and Lisa (Vicky Myers) hear about an unidentified coma patient at the hospital, and wonder if it could be Gary. Meanwhile, when Nina (Mollie Gallagher) and Summer (Harriet Bibby) hear that Gary is missing and hasn't made any bank transactions since June 23, they begin to worry that it could have been him they saw on the night of the party when they were high on drugs. More Trending At the hospital, Gary has a visitor – a mystery woman who is keeping vigil at his bedside. Even more mysteriously, she's told the hospital staff that the injured man is called Chesney. This means that when Kit contacts the hospital about whether the missing man could be Gary, he's told it isn't him. He tells Maria and reassures her that the police will do all they can to find out where Gary is. But in the meantime, who is the mystery woman and why is she claiming that Gary is called Chesney? Emmerdale's Kim prepares to break big news about unexpected new love interest

When Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick) spotted her good friend and employer Kim Tate (Claire King) in the cafe in Emmerdale recently she also spotted something else. Kim was looking at messages on her phone, and Lydia – who knows her very well – realised that Kim had a new man in her life. Obviously she wanted to know more, but Kim wasn't giving much away although we've previously seen her texting someone called Eddie. Lydia guessed it was someone connected with horses, as we all know Kim loves horses, but Kim said no. In fact, her new beau is a cosmetic surgeon. That's bound to come in handy if she ever decides she needs a few tweakments, but for the time being Lydia was pleased to see her friend looking happier than she has in a while. On Christmas Day, Kim's husband Will Taylor (Dean Andrews) died unexpectedly of a heart attack. His death came at the end of a turbulent time for the couple who were daggers-drawn after Will got a bit too close to his ex-wife. Revenge and counter-revenge ensued, with Kim at one point staging a blackmail plot against Will and pushing him into an open grave in the woods. Will then joined in a plan to destroy Kim and take all of her money, but he changed his mind when he realised he was still in love with her. As Will collapsed to the floor on Christmas Day, Kim refused to believe his life was really in danger and it was new arrival Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) who pointed out that Will was having a heart attack. In emotional scenes Kim desperately tried to help her husband, but it was too late. Kim was distraught, as was Will's daughter Dawn (Olivia Bromley). After her father's death Dawn accused Kim of killing him and got her arrested. She also drugged her with ketamine. More Trending Eventually Dawn came to realise that Will's death wasn't down to Killer Kim, and Kim reassured her that she thought of her as a daughter. To seal the deal she persuaded Dawn to give up her job at the vet's and work for Home Farm Estates instead. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? Since then, Kim has been on hand for advice about the Dawn/Billy (Jay Kontzle)/Joe triangle and the two women have been getting on fairly well. But the usually fearless Kim is definitely worried in upcoming episodes when she realises that it's time to tell the rest of the family about new boyfriend Eddie.
