EU-Funded Gene Bank Launched in Kurdistan
In a landmark move to protect Iraq's agricultural legacy and strengthen its food security, the foundation stone has been laid for the country's first-ever Gene/Seed Bank, located in Hawari Shar Park, Sulaymaniyah.
The facility is being funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in cooperation with Iraq's Federal and Regional Governments, under the " Restoration and Strengthening the Resilience of Agri-Food Systems in Iraq " project.
The inauguration was held under the auspices of H.E. Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, and attended by Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources Begard Talabani, Governor of Sulaymaniyah Dr. Haval Abubakir, Mayor of Sulaymaniyah Ms. Leyla Omar Ali, FAO Representative Salah El Hajj Hassan, and other senior officials from academia and agriculture.
Mr. Qubad Talabani described the gene bank as " an investment for the future; it protects our past and secures our future. "
With over 3,500 plant species native to Iraq, the gene bank will conserve rare and wild varieties of grains, vegetables, and indigenous crops. It will support the development of climate-resilient agriculture by preserving traits such as drought tolerance.
Minister Begard Talabani called the initiative a "strategic milestone" that will aid scientific research and protect Iraq's plant diversity for generations to come.
FAO's Salah El Hajj Hassan thanked the EU for its funding and reiterated the project's alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals-particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). He described the gene bank as a centre for innovation and resilience.
The facility will feature storage vaults, laboratories, seed documentation, and conservation units, with planned future expansions including a cryobank, tissue culture laboratory, and field gene bank.

As a member of this community, I write not a political statement, but a moral plea. A plea from a surviving child, from a grieving mother, from a father who lost his home, from an elder who no longer finds solace even in prayer. We do not seek revenge. We call upon the American government, as one of the international actors that once granted legitimacy to the current Syrian regime, to hold accountable those responsible for the atrocities in Sweida. We demand an immediate halt to the lawless chaos carried out by the so-called "Shari'a" militias – extremist groups backed by elements once recruited into the regime's apparatus and now repurposed into a new campaign of oppression and fear. Following the withdrawal of regular forces from Sweida under political agreements, the door has been left open for these terrorist gangs – armed and emboldened – to take control, spreading terror under the name of the regime and the cover of international silence. The United States, as a sponsor of certain political tracks, is called upon today – not tomorrow – to respond. Granting international legitimacy to a government that has not demonstrated the basic ability or willingness to protect its people is a disgraceful silence – and an indirect endorsement of violence. Who Supports These Militias? What we face is not random. The militias attacking Sweida are supported either directly by the regime or by forces closely aligned with it. These are "official militias" in an "unofficial" disguise, executing brutal acts after regular forces were strategically pulled out to avoid international condemnation. What is even more alarming is that the so-called "Shari'a" group has drafted a strict Islamic constitution – one that opposes the very principles of pluralism, coexistence, and religious inclusion. It seeks to erase anyone who differs in belief or identity. We Ask for Protection, Not Privilege We, the Druze – small in number, vast in spirit – do not seek power, nor do we wish to shift political balances. We only ask to live... without fear. We ask for immediate international protection. We ask for independent UN monitoring of the crimes committed. We ask for these violations to be formally entered into the records of the Security Council and for an urgent investigation by recognized human rights organizations. We ask for the free voices of the world to join us in this cry. Not because we are Druze, but because we are human beings. And what is happening in Sweida today could happen anywhere tomorrow if the world remains blind and deaf. A Call To Humanity We now call on the international community not just to give humanitarian aid, but to take a clear positions on crimes against civilians. We want our voices to reach the U.S. administration through you. Be a bridge of truth, not a silent institution. This is not a political issue – it is a matter of global conscience. We do not want anything but to remain alive... with dignity. To pray in our homes without being killed for being different. This is a cry from the heart of Syria, For humanity. Russia bans EU officials over sanctions push
Shafaq News – Moscow On Tuesday, Russia expanded its entry ban list to include additional European Union officials and citizens in response to the EU's latest sanctions against Moscow. In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Brussels of undermining the authority of the United Nations Security Council. The updated blacklist includes individuals accused of 'undermining Russia's territorial integrity, enforcing maritime blockades in the Baltic Sea, pursuing legal action against Russian officials,' advocating the seizure of Russian state assets, or supporting international tribunals targeting Russian leaders. It also names EU lawmakers and activists allegedly involved in promoting anti-Russian rhetoric or legislation. The ministry further emphasized that such 'hostile acts' would not alter its political course, warning that any future EU sanctions would receive a 'timely and proportional response.' Earlier, the United Kingdom announced 137 new sanctions targeting Russia's oil and energy sectors, focusing on the so-called 'shadow fleet' used to evade international restrictions. The UK also coordinated with the European Union to lower the Crude Oil Price Cap, the G7 mechanism on Russian seaborne crude oil and petroleum products. Iraqi Minister sounds alarm on "serious challenges"
Shafaq News – New York Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning, Mohammed Ali Tamim, said on Monday that the country continues to face major challenges, particularly those related to climate change and the worsening water shortage. Representing Iraq at the opening session of the 2025 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development—held by the United Nations in New York from July 21 to 24 to assess global progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—Tamim stressed that the water crisis remains one of Iraq's most urgent challenges. He expressed gratitude for the UN's continued support to developing countries and acknowledged the meaningful cooperation of international partners in addressing this critical issue. Earlier, Iraq's Green Observatory estimated the country's annual groundwater reserves at 3.4 billion cubic meters, with sustainable yields potentially exceeding 5 billion cubic meters per year. Official Iraqi data indicate the country could face a 20% decline in surface water availability by 2035, driven by upstream flow reductions and the escalating impacts of climate change.
