The Tragedy Of The Druze Community In Syria – Granting International Legitimacy To A Government That Has Not Demonstrated The Basic Ability Or Willingness To Protect Its People Is An Indirect Endorsem

Memri7 days ago
In the heart of Syria, deep within a wound left open for years, a community known for its wisdom, patience, and inner peace is once again under attack. The Druze – a rooted, ancient community grounded in tolerance and coexistence – are now enduring a new chapter of collective pain. Entire villages in Sweida province have been assaulted. Families displaced, women widowed, and children who once dreamed of school and peace now see those dreams reduced to ashes.
Elderly men have been humiliated, young people arrested or forcibly disappeared, and voices of truth are being suffocated in the chaos of armed militias. What's happening is not a passing conflict – it is a systematic crime. A humanitarian disaster committed in broad daylight while the world watches silently, offering analysis but no action.
As a member of this community, I write not a political statement, but a moral plea. A plea from a surviving child, from a grieving mother, from a father who lost his home, from an elder who no longer finds solace even in prayer. We do not seek revenge. We do not carry weapons of hatred. We only raise our voices in truth.
Sheikh Dr. Kasem Bader
Silence Today Is A Betrayal Of Justice
Where Is The World?
Where is the conscience of humanity?
Where is the international community?
Where are the United Nations and the Human Rights Council?
Where are the United States, the European Union, and the Arab League?
Where are you for a mother who lost her children before her eyes? From children who saw their fathers executed? From elders beaten in their own homes? From a people who want nothing more than to survive – with dignity?
Silence today is a betrayal of justice.
Turning a blind eye makes the world a silent partner in a continuous crime.
Syrian Soldiers Force Druze Civilians at Gunpoint to Jump to Their Deaths from a Balcony – Viewer Discretion Advised; In a video circulated online on July 19, 2025, Syrian soldiers are seen forcing Druze civilians at gunpoint to jump off the balcony of a private residence to their deaths. The soldiers filmed the incident themselves and can be heard reciting "Allahu Akbar" after the men jump. The Role Of The International Community: A Call For Accountability
It is time for the U.S. administration to act – clearly and decisively.
We call upon the American government, as one of the international actors that once granted legitimacy to the current Syrian regime, to hold accountable those responsible for the atrocities in Sweida.
We demand an immediate halt to the lawless chaos carried out by the so-called "Shari'a" militias – extremist groups backed by elements once recruited into the regime's apparatus and now repurposed into a new campaign of oppression and fear. Following the withdrawal of regular forces from Sweida under political agreements, the door has been left open for these terrorist gangs – armed and emboldened – to take control, spreading terror under the name of the regime and the cover of international silence.
The United States, as a sponsor of certain political tracks, is called upon today – not tomorrow – to respond.
Granting international legitimacy to a government that has not demonstrated the basic ability or willingness to protect its people is a disgraceful silence – and an indirect endorsement of violence.
Who Supports These Militias?
What we face is not random.
The militias attacking Sweida are supported either directly by the regime or by forces closely aligned with it. These are "official militias" in an "unofficial" disguise, executing brutal acts after regular forces were strategically pulled out to avoid international condemnation.
What is even more alarming is that the so-called "Shari'a" group has drafted a strict Islamic constitution – one that opposes the very principles of pluralism, coexistence, and religious inclusion. It seeks to erase anyone who differs in belief or identity.
We Ask for Protection, Not Privilege
We, the Druze – small in number, vast in spirit – do not seek power, nor do we wish to shift political balances. We only ask to live... without fear.
We ask for immediate international protection.
We ask for independent UN monitoring of the crimes committed.
We ask for these violations to be formally entered into the records of the Security Council and for an urgent investigation by recognized human rights organizations.
We ask for the free voices of the world to join us in this cry. Not because we are Druze, but because we are human beings. And what is happening in Sweida today could happen anywhere tomorrow if the world remains blind and deaf.
A Call To Humanity
We now call on the international community not just to give humanitarian aid, but to take a clear positions on crimes against civilians. We want our voices to reach the U.S. administration through you. Be a bridge of truth, not a silent institution.
This is not a political issue – it is a matter of global conscience.
We do not want anything but to remain alive... with dignity.
To pray in our homes without being killed for being different.
This is a cry from the heart of Syria,
For humanity.
For lives that do not deserve to be buried in silence.

‘No alternative' to two-state solution for Israel, Palestinians

United Nations – France told a UN conference co-chaired with Saudi Arabia on Monday that there is 'no alternative' to a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians. 'Only a political, two-state solution will help respond to the legitimate aspirations of Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security. There is no alternative,' French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said at the start of the three-day meeting. Days before the conference, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he would formally recognize a State of Palestine in September. In an interview with French weekly La Tribune Dimanche, Barrot said that other European countries will confirm 'their intention to recognize the State of Palestine' during the conference, without confirming which. 'All states have a responsibility to act now,' said Palestinian prime minister Mohammad Mustafa at the start of the meeting, calling for an international force to deploy to help underwrite Palestinian statehood. 'Recognize the state of Palestine without delay.' France is hoping that Britain will take this step. More than 200 British members of parliament on Friday voiced support for the idea, but Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated that recognition of a Palestinian state 'must be part of a wider plan.' According to an AFP database, at least 142 of the 193 UN member states — including France — now recognize the Palestinian state proclaimed by the Palestinian leadership in exile in 1988. In 1947, a resolution of the UN General Assembly decided on the partition of Palestine, then under a British mandate, into two independent states — one Jewish and the other Arab. The following year, the state of Israel was proclaimed. For several decades, the vast majority of UN member states have supported the idea of a two-state solution, Israelis and Palestinians living side-by-side. But after more than 21 months of war in Gaza, the ongoing expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and Israeli officials declaring designs to annex occupied territory, it is feared a Palestinian state could be geographically impossible. The current war in Gaza started following a deadly attack by Hamas on Israel, which responded with a large-scale military response that has claimed tens of thousands of Palestinian lives. This week's conference comes at a moment when 'the prospect of a Palestinian state has never been so threatened, or so necessary,' Barrot said. – Call for courage – Beyond facilitating conditions for the recognition of a Palestinian state, the meeting will focus on three other issues — reform of the Palestinian Authority, disarmament of Hamas and its exclusion from Palestinian public life, and normalization of relations with Israel by Arab states. However, no new normalization deals are expected to be announced at the meeting, according to a French diplomatic source. On the other hand, 'for the first time, Arab countries will condemn Hamas and call for its disarmament,' Barrot said. The conference 'offers a unique opportunity to transform international law and the international consensus into an achievable plan and to demonstrate resolve to end the occupation and conflict once and for all, for the benefit of all peoples,' said Palestinian ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour, calling for 'courage' from participants. Israel and the United States were not taking part in the meeting, amid growing international pressure to mount on Israel to end nearly two years of war in Gaza. Despite 'tactical pauses' in some military operations announced by Israel, the humanitarian catastrophe in the ravaged coastal territory is expected to dominate speeches by representatives of more than 100 countries as they take the podium. Bruno Stagno, chief advocacy officer at Human Rights Watch, said 'more platitudes about a two-state solution and peace process will do nothing to advance the conference's goals, nor to halt the extermination of Palestinians in Gaza.'

EU pledges €1.1M to tackle Basra water crisis

Shafaq News – Baghdad The European Union announced, on Tuesday, the allocation of €1.1M in emergency humanitarian aid to address the worsening water crisis in Basra, southern Iraq. In a statement, the EU mission in Iraq said the funding will support urgent water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) needs over the next six months, targeting the most vulnerable communities. An estimated 500,000 people have been severely affected by deteriorating water quality and limited access to clean water. The mission noted that many of those impacted live in informal settlements on the outskirts of Basra, where the crisis is most acute. The funding, channeled through the Norwegian Red Cross in partnership with the Iraqi Red Crescent, aims to deliver rapid and effective assistance to the hardest-hit populations. The EU outlined that the response will focus on restoring and upgrading water supply units in underserved areas, delivering clean water by tanker to remote communities, and improving water treatment systems in locations facing the most severe shortages. US congressman seeks to block Iraq funding over ‘terrorist militias' attacks

A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - US Congressman Joe Wilson on Tuesday announced a renewed effort to block American funding to Iraq, accusing Baghdad of financially supporting 'terrorist militias' aligned with Iran - groups he claims are behind recent drone attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region. In a statement on X, Wilson said, 'I will work toward PROHIBITION on funding to Iraq while it funds these terrorist militias' which 'launch more drones today against our appreciated friends in the [Kurdistan Regional Government] KRG, as well as U.S. troops, and work with the head of the snake Iran to destabilize Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen. 'This cannot be tolerated anymore,' he charged, pledging to push for the 'rightful designation' of these groups 'as TERRORIST organizations.' The Kurdistan Region has endured nearly 20 drone and rocket attacks in recent weeks, including on its energy infrastructure. The latest occurred on Monday, when an explosive-laden drone crashed in Erbil's western Khabat district. No casualties were reported, according to Kurdish counterterrorism forces. The drone strikes have repeatedly targeted oil fields in the Kurdistan Region, prompting production suspensions and causing significant damage to Erbil's oil sector - already weakened by the ongoing closure of the Iraq-Turkey pipeline since March 2023. The KRG's interior ministry previously blamed the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) - an umbrella group of Iran-aligned Iraqi armed groups - for the attacks. However, the Iraqi government in Baghdad has dismissed the claims as 'unacceptable.' Meanwhile, International actors, including the United States, United Kingdom, and the United Nations, have strongly condemned the drone strikes on the Kurdistan Region. In an interview published Monday by the Associated Press, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani condemned the drone attacks on the Kurdistan Region as 'terrorist' acts. He said his government is working closely with the KRG and the US-led Global Coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS) to identify and hold those responsible accountable. Also on Monday, Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji visited Erbil and met with senior Kurdish officials. He told Rudaw that a recently-formed joint committee between Erbil and Baghdad is investigating the attacks but has not yet completed its work. "The joint technical committees are continuing their work to gather all evidence and facts regarding the attacks,' Araji said, adding that 'once their work is complete, all members of the joint committee will present their recommendations' to Sudani.
