
Alaska Air Brings Back Annual Profit Outlook on Improved Demand
Average fares and revenue have improved in recent bookings at both Alaska and its Hawaiian Airlines unit, leading to a 2025 adjusted profit outlook of more than $3.25 a share, the carrier said Wednesday in a statement that also included second-quarter financial results.
The airline was among those that pulled annual outlooks in April, after uncertainty stoked by President Donald Trump's tariff policies rattled business and consumer confidence and cratered demand early in the year. Increased business travel — particularly in the tech industry — that started late in the second quarter has persisted this month as companies see more stability in the macroeconomy, Chief Financial Officer Shane Tackett said.
'That's been a good development,' Tackett said in an interview. 'We're optimistic that if it remains, we could have a stronger second half than the first as some demand that stepped down comes back.'
The recent pickup in travel is particularly important for Alaska as it continues combining operations with Hawaiian, which it acquired in September. Alaska and other US-focused carriers were more affected by the early drop in demand than rivals including United Airlines Group Inc. and Delta Air Lines Inc. that also have extensive international operations.
Alaska will limit flying capacity growth in the second half of the year. The carrier expects third quarter seating to be 1% lower than 2024 on demand that's below its expectations during off-peak travel times. Smaller airlines are broadly expected to slow growth after the summer travel period in an effort to better match demand and boost fares.
The airline also said it expects a third-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $1 to $1.40. That is lower than the $1.65 average of analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Wall Street was expecting a 2025 adjusted profit of $3.31 per share.
Alaska has taken delivery of two Embraer SA E175 aircraft that it delayed earlier this year on the threat of possible tariffs, Tackett said. The airline is set to receive three more next year and will have to evaluate 'whether or not those assets make economic sense for us' if tariffs force Embraer to increase prices markedly. Embraer's chief executive officer has said punitive tariffs threatened by Trump could add $9 million to the price of each plane.
Alaska's adjusted second-quarter profit was $1.78 a share, topping the $1.53 average from analyst estimates. Revenue was $3.7 billion, while analysts were expecting $3.66 billion.

OVER 30 remarks crediting himself for the India-Pakistan ceasefire, referring to India as a 'dead economy,' dropping the 25% tariff bombshell and a Russia penalty even as talks are on — US President Donald Trump's diatribe was met Friday by diplomatic pragmatism from the Ministry of External Affairs. Underlining that the India-US partnership has 'weathered several transitions and challenges,' the MEA said that New Delhi will remain 'focused on the substantive agenda' even as it flagged that its friendship with Russia was 'time-tested.' This response came the day Trump unveiled sweeping new tariffs on dozens of countries including 25 per cent for goods from India. Responding to a question, MEA's official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Friday: 'India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties. This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges. We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to and are confident that the relationship will continue to move forward.' Asked about India-US defence ties in the wake of reports of India refusing to consider F-35 fighter jets, the MEA spokesperson said, 'We have a strong defence partnership with the U.S. which has been strengthening over the last several years. There is potential for this partnership to grow further under the India-US COMPACT for the 21st century.' Responding to Trump's talk of a penalty on India for buying energy from Russia, Jaiswal said: 'In securing our energy needs, we are guided by what is on offer in the markets, and by the prevailing global circumstances.' Incidentally, this has been Delhi's position for the last three years, since the war in Ukraine broke out after the Russian invasion in February 2022. On Trump's tirade against India-Russia ties and that they are both 'dead economies', the MEA spokesperson said: 'Our bilateral relationships with various countries stand on their own merit and should not be seen from the prism of a third country. India and Russia have a steady and time-tested partnership.' On Trump's anger at India buying Russian defence equipment, he said, 'The sourcing of our defence requirements is determined solely by our national security imperatives and strategic assessments.' While India does depend on Russia for the defence supplies, much of it is because of the legacy from the Soviet Union era. Although the dependency is about 60 to 70 per cent, India has, in the past few years, steadily diversified its defence purchases from countries including the US. Yet, the framing by Trump — 'I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care' — has been seen as offensive by many. While his criticism of India putting high tariffs has been a pet grievance from his first term — when he called India a 'tariff king' — the US President's latest statement described India's trade policies as 'most strenuous and obnoxious'. Trump's remarks deepen Delhi's diplomatic challenge when India and the US are negotiating a bilateral trade deal. There are two possible impulses that guide Trump's responses, according to Delhi's analysis. First, his negotiating style to browbeat and bully the adversary by imposing high tariffs and try and get the deal on his own terms. This has been seen with China, where he imposed 145 per cent tariffs and then dialled down to 35 – after talks in Geneva. Second, some in the Indian establishment feel that the US President has not taken very kindly to Delhi fact-checking Trump's claims on brokering a ceasefire. Not only has PM Narendra Modi conveyed this in the phone call with Trump on June 17, but Indian ministers and officials have repeatedly denied the claim. Despite not stating that President Trump is a 'liar' — as demanded by Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi — the Indian government has forcefully contradicted the US President. But New Delhi feels that Trump's remarks threaten to undo the hard work made by the two countries as 'strategic partners' in a relationship that was framed as the 'defining partnership of the 21st century' by US President Barack Obama. South Block is, however, trying to not get drawn into an emotional and angry response, and is projecting restraint amid the US President's verbal tirade and social media blitzkrieg of epithets directed at India. While the Commerce ministry said it has 'taken note' of Trump's statement on bilateral trade and the Government is studying its implications, sources said that any response had to be shorn of emotion. 'India and the US have been engaged in negotiations on concluding a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement over the last few months. We remain committed to that objective,' the Commerce ministry statement had said. Sources said that negotiators from both sides are in touch and they have to be immune from the noise. The diplomatic challenge is three-fold, sources said: how long can Delhi stand its ground against the US; whether India can engage with Trump's inner circle; and whether they can overcome the distrust fuelled by the Trump's comments in the long term. 'We will not get drawn into the tit-for-tat response with the US President, and our negotiators have been asked to not pay attention to Trump's unique style of public negotiations. With US their key market, worried apparel exporters seek Govt help
With President Donald Trump setting a higher tariff on India (at 25 per cent) than on over 50 other countries — including Bangladesh and Vietnam, which, together with China, are among the top apparel exporters to the United States — domestic apparel exporters have expressed concern and sought government intervention. The new tariffs are set to come into effect from August 7. 'We request immediate government intervention to offset this huge setback. Exporters have their back against the wall and will have to sell below cost to keep their factories running and avoid mass layoffs,' Sudhir Sekhri, Chairman, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), said in a statement. The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), New Delhi based-industry chambers of the textile and clothing sector, also said that the latest US tariff announcement has added to the challenges that India's textile and apparel exporters were already grappling with. 'The latest US tariff announcement, following which the tariff rates have been substantially reduced for many countries including Bangladesh, against whom we are competing for a larger share of the US market, will compound the difficulties for India's textile and apparel exporters as we will be handicapped by a severe duty disadvantage,' CITI Chairman Rakesh Mehra said. Seeking government intervention for easier availability of raw materials, CITI said while the tariff rate for India has been set at 25 per cent, the rate for competing countries such as Bangladesh is 20 per cent, Indonesia and Cambodia are 19 per cent each and Vietnam is 20 per cent. While China continues to be the top exporter of textile and apparel items in the US, its market share has come down from 27.4 per cent in 2020 to 21.9 per cent in 2024. However, India's market share has been rising. The US is a key market for Indian Ready-Made Garments (RMG) exports; its share in India's total garment exports in 2024 stood at 33 per cent, AEPC said. India's presence in the US garment import market increased from 4.5 per cent in 2020 to 5.8 per cent in 2024. India ranks fourth among the top RMG exporters to the US, it said. 'Top three most exported products by India to US: cotton T-shirts (9.71 per cent); women's or girls' dresses of cotton (6.52 per cent); babies' garments of cotton (5.46 per cent), etc. The top three exports of India to the US hold 10, 36, and 20 per cent share, respectively, in the US total imports of these products globally,' the export promotion council said. The Ministry of Textiles on Friday said that the overall exports from the sectors including handicrafts has grown 5 per cent during FY25, at $37.7 billion, compared to $35.8 billion during the previous financial year. The Ministry also said that it has implemented the Scheme for Integrated Textile Park (SITP) to provide support for setting up textile parks with world-class, state-of-the-art infrastructure in textile hubs across the country. The government has finalised setting up of PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM-MITRA) parks at seven sites – Tamil Nadu (Virudhnagar), Telangana (Warangal), Gujarat (Navasari), Karnataka (Kalaburagi), Madhya Pradesh (Dhar), Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow) and Maharashtra (Amravati) with an outlay of Rs 4,445 crore for a period of seven years up to 2027-28. While the in-person India-US trade negotiations are expected to continue after the second half of August, the deal is stuck over sensitive sectors such as agriculture and automobiles. Apple CEO Tells Staff AI Is ‘Ours to Grab' in Hourlong Pep Talk
(Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook, holding a rare all-hands meeting following earnings results, rallied employees around the company's artificial intelligence prospects and an 'amazing' pipeline of products. The executive gathered staff at Apple's on-campus auditorium Friday in Cupertino, California, telling them that the AI revolution is 'as big or bigger' as the internet, smartphones, cloud computing and apps. 'Apple must do this. Apple will do this. This is sort of ours to grab,' Cook told employees, according to people aware of the meeting. 'We will make the investment to do it.' The iPhone maker has been late to AI, debuting Apple Intelligence months after OpenAI, Alphabet Inc.'s Google, Microsoft Corp. and others flooded the market with products like ChatGPT. And when Apple finally released its AI tools, they fell flat. But Cook struck an optimistic tone, noting that Apple is typically late to promising new technologies. 'We've rarely been first,' the executive told staffers. 'There was a PC before the Mac; there was a smartphone before the iPhone; there were many tablets before the iPad; there was an MP3 player before iPod.' But Apple invented the 'modern' versions of those product categories, he said. 'This is how I feel about AI.' An Apple spokesperson declined to comment on the gathering. The hourlong meeting addressed a range of topics, including the retirement of operating chief Jeff Williams, increasing Apple TV viewership and advances in health care with features like the AirPods Pro hearing-aid technology. It also touched on donations and community service by Apple employees, the company's goal to become carbon neutral by 2030, and the impact of regulations. 'The reality is that Big Tech is under a lot of scrutiny around the world,' Cook said. 'We need to continue to push on the intention of the regulation and get them to offer that up, instead of these things that destroy the user experience and user privacy and security.' Cook often holds town hall-style chats when visiting Apple's offices around the world, but companywide meetings from the Steve Jobs Theater at headquarters are unusual. The remarks followed a blockbuster earnings report, with sales growing nearly 10% during the June quarter. That beat Wall Street expectations and eased concerns about iPhone demand and a slowdown in China. Apple still faces myriad challenges, including Trump administration tariffs and a regulatory crackdown on its business practices. The company said Thursday that tariffs would bring a $1.1 billion headwind this quarter, though Apple was upbeat about sales growth. It also said that App Store revenue rose by a percentage in the double digits last quarter, despite efforts in the EU and elsewhere to further restrict that business. The company had planned to roll out a Siri overhaul as part of Apple Intelligence earlier this year, adding the ability to tap into user data to better fulfill requests. It was delayed, spurring management changes for the company's AI work. Federighi explained that the problem was caused by trying to roll out a version of Siri that merged two different systems: one for handling current commands — like setting timers — and another based on large language models, the software behind generative AI. 'We initially wanted to do a hybrid architecture, but we realized that approach wasn't going to get us to Apple quality,' Federighi said. Now, Apple is working on a version of Siri that moves to an entirely new architecture for all of its capabilities. That iteration is slated for as early as spring, Bloomberg News has reported, though Apple executives haven't confirmed a timeline other than a release next year. 'The work we've done on this end-to-end revamp of Siri has given us the results we needed,' the engineering executive told employees. 'This has put us in a position to not just deliver what we announced, but to deliver a much bigger upgrade than we envisioned. There is no project people are taking more seriously.' Federighi cited leadership changes, including putting Vision Pro creator Mike Rockwell and his headset software leadership team in charge of Siri, as a driving force in improving the product. He said Rockwell and his group have 'supercharged' the company's work in the area. In his speech, Cook also pushed employees to move more quickly to weave AI into their work and future products. 'All of us are using AI in a significant way already, and we must use it as a company as well,' Cook said. 'To not do so would be to be left behind, and we can't do that.' Employees should push to deploy AI tools faster, and urge their managers and service and support teams to do the same, he said. Cook also addressed the company's retail strategy, stressing that the current plan is to focus on opening new stores in emerging markets and upping the investment in Apple's online store. The iPhone maker is opening outlets in India, the United Arab Emirates and China this year, and is preparing to add its first location in Saudi Arabia next year. 'We need to be in more countries, and you'll see us go into more emerging markets in particular,' Cook said. That doesn't mean Apple will ignore other places, he said, but a 'disproportionate amount of growth' will be in new areas. The CEO also shared his enthusiasm about upcoming products, though he didn't get specific. 'I have never felt so much excitement and so much energy before as right now,' he said. Bloomberg News has previously reported that Apple plans to launch its first foldable iPhone next year and is also working on a stream of smart home devices. New headset products, smart glasses, a push into robotics and a redesigned iPhone for the two-decade anniversary are also underway. 'The product pipeline, which I can't talk about: It's amazing, guys. It's amazing,' Cook said. 'Some of it you'll see soon, some of it will come later, but there's a lot to see.'
