Russia says downs 112 Ukrainian drones, 8 people wounded
MOSCOW: Russia's defence ministry said Friday that it had downed 112 Ukrainian drones in a third night of attacks, with Moscow again targeted with strikes that again disrupted operations at several airports.
Since Thursday evening, 'air defence systems destroyed and intercepted 112 Ukrainian drones', including 24 that were headed toward the capital, the ministry said.
Eight people were wounded in the Lipetsk region around 450 kilometres (280 miles) southeast of Moscow when debris from a falling drone struck an industrial zone in the city of Yelets and caused a fire, regional governor Igor Artamonov said on Telegram.
Russia and Ukraine have deployed drones against one another on a near daily basis since Russia launched its military offensive on Ukraine more than three years ago, but Moscow has rarely been targeted.
On Thursday, flights were halted at several Moscow airports, Russia's aviation authority Rosaviatsiya said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly rebuffed calls by Kyiv and the West for an unconditional and immediate ceasefire.
Russia now controls around a fifth of Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula which it annexed in 2014.
The fighting has killed tens of thousands, forced millions to flee their homes and destroyed cities and villages across the east and south of Ukraine.

Myanmar arrests 16, including 6-year-old, over general's assassination
YANGON: Myanmar authorities have arrested 16 people including a six-year-old girl over the assassination of a retired general shot dead in Yangon last month, state media said. Cho Tun Aung, a former ambassador to Cambodia, was gunned down outside his home on May 22 in an attack claimed by an anti-junta group calling itself the "Golden Valley Warriors." Myanmar's military seized power in a 2021 coup, plunging the country into a complex, multi-sided civil war involving pro-democracy guerrillas and resurgent ethnic minority armed groups. Most fighting is confined to the countryside and smaller towns but grenade and gun attacks on junta-linked targets are regularly reported in Yangon, Myanmar's largest city and commercial hub. The Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper said 16 members of the Golden Valley Warriors – 13 men and three females – had been arrested in various locations. Those held include the wife and six-year-old daughter of the suspected shooter, identified as Myo Ko Ko, the state-run newspaper said, without explaining what the girl is accused of. The report said Myo Ko Ko and another suspect rode to the general's home on bicycles and shot him before fleeing to a safe house. The junta has suffered significant territorial setbacks in recent months but analysts say it is far from defeat, with a powerful air force supplied with Russian jets and military backing from China.--AFP

Doping-Guliyev to be stripped of 2012 Olympic medal after CAS dismisses appeal on ban

Guliyev, who competed for Russia before switching allegiance to Turkey, was banned for two years in April 2024 for the period from March 2023 for the use of a prohibited substance, with the AIU disqualifying her results from July 17, 2012 until October 20, 2014. The 2012 Olympics were held from July 27-August 12. Competing as Ekaterina Poistogova, she finished third in the 2012 Olympic final. But Guliyev was upgraded to silver when Russian winner Mariya Savinova was found guilty of doping offences, before she herself was also banned for doping. "In reaching its judgement, CAS upheld the decision to disqualify the 34-year-old's results from 17 July 2012 to 20 October 2014, confirming the loss of her reallocated Olympic silver medal," the AIU said in a statement. "World Athletics and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are now proceeding with the next steps." World Athletics' competition department will now disqualify her results and then notify the IOC. The IOC may then proceed with the reallocation of Olympic medals, with Kenyan Pamela Jelimo set to be awarded the silver while American Alysia Montano will be moved up to the bronze medal position. The women's middle distance events at the London Olympics were heavily tainted by doping with two other runners in the 800m final since having had their results voided - Savinova and Russian Elena Arzhakova. Guliyev is one of hundreds of athletes who have been sanctioned following the 'Operation LIMS' investigation into Moscow's anti-doping laboratory which uncovered widespread institutionalised doping.
