Rockets Star Alperen Sengun Sends Clear Shot at Warriors
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun, coming off his first All-Star season, reflected on last season's heated NBA playoff series against the Golden State Warriors during a recent appearance on the Socrates Dergi podcast. Reflecting on Golden State's approach, Sengun pointed to the Warriors' veteran savvy, but felt they spent much of the series "crying" to referees about fouls. "They're a very experienced team," Sengun said. "They fouled a lot. In the playoffs, they don't call it. But they were the ones crying all series about fouls not being called." Expert NBA analysis on the best NBA player prop picks today, including Alperen Sengun's chances of going over his point prop. Sengun said the contrast between the two teams' reactions was also tied to head coach Ime Udoka's leadership. "When it comes to us, we're not really allowed to complain," Sengun said. "It's more of an internal thing. Ime Udoka doesn't allow it. He loses his mind if we complain." Read more: Rockets Could Make Massive Kevin Durant Move Golden State closed out the series with a 103-89 win in Game 7, led by Buddy Hield's 33 points and nine 3-pointers in his best performance as a Warrior. Both teams finished with 14 personal fouls in the game. Houston attempted 21 free throws compared to Golden State's nine, but the Warriors controlled the pace and never let the Rockets find rhythm. Sengun felt the first-round matchup with Golden State was one of the most difficult scenarios possible. "The Warriors were probably the one team that would have gave us the most trouble, and we drew them," Sengun said. The Turkish center still posted strong numbers in the matchup, averaging 20.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in the series. His postseason impact came following a standout regular season, during which he averaged 19.1 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists over 76 games and earned his first All-Star selection. Read more: Former NBA Star Throws Shade at Rockets' Kevin Durant The Rockets addressed their early playoff exit by acquiring Kevin Durant, a two-time Finals MVP and one of the most accomplished scorers in NBA history. His addition provides Houston with another elite option alongside Sengun and the team's elite defense, boosting the team's ceiling. Durant's postseason experience should only help a young team still figuring out how to succeed on the biggest stage. The Rockets finished last season with a record of 50-32 and have added a true go-to option after struggling offensively in the postseason. As a result, they are entering the next season with heightened expectations for a deep postseason run. For more on the Houston Rockets and general NBA news, head on over to Newsweek Sports.

As Rockets play more zone defense, Alperen Sengun credits Steven Adams
'That's why zone defense really worked for us,' Alperen Sengun says of Houston's changing schemes. 'It's all about being smart and reading the game.' Late in the 2024-25 NBA season, the Houston Rockets found surprising success utilizing two-center lineups featuring both starter Alperen Sengun and backup Steven Adams. The advantages in size, rebounding, and physicality were obvious, but there were always questions regarding how it could hold up in space, defensively. To mitigate that, head coach Ime Udoka often utilized a zone defense when Sengun and Adams shared the floor, and it fared relatively well. So, who deserves the credit? Via his recent Turkish interview with with Socrates Dergi, Sengun gives much of the credit to his veteran backup. Regarding Adams and the zone, Sengun said (translated via English subtitles): Steven was really effective in the zone. He talks a lot. He's got a ton of experience. He knows where to stand and directs me and Jabari (Smith Jr.) a lot. We adapted super quickly. Steven and I kind of run things from the back. We talk constantly. I'm talking to Jabari, Steven is talking to me. And when Fred (VanVleet) is out there, too... Fred is so smart, he always knows exactly where to be. That's why zone defense really worked for us. It's all about being smart and reading the game. To that end, even though Adams is clearly a starting caliber center in the NBA and has functioned as one for most of his career, Sengun is glad to have him around. 'The day he signed with us, I immediately called our head coach (Udoka) and GM (Rafael Stone),' Sengun said. 'Having such a great big man behind you might have bothered another player, but I was really happy.' 'I learn a lot from him,' Sengun concluded. 'He focuses entirely on us being the best we can be. He's a great veteran. Steven's main focus is for us to get better.' With the Rockets having recently signed a third starting-caliber center in Clint Capela, expect even more double-big lineups and zone defensive schemes in the upcoming 2025-26 season.
